Dear Students, As you may know the NBME exam has strict requirements about programs running on exam laptops. To help you configure your laptop for the exam, we have created a short checklist for you to complete on test day: 1. Restart your computer immediately before the exam Recently run applications do NOT always clean up themselves after being closed and tend to leave processes running in memory. Some of these processes could be flagged by the NBME browser. 2. Connect to GWireless Go to your computer's wireless settings. Select GWireless and enter your NetID and Password. Accept any certificates that GWireless provides. 3. Disable any automatic updates from Windows or OSX to ensure your computer doesn’t reboot in the middle of the exam. x Mac instructions: Open your System Preferences and select App Store. Uncheck the box next to Automatically check for updates. x PC instructions: Open your Control Panel and select Windows Update. On the left, select Change settings. Select Download updates but let me choose whether to install them and click OK. 4. Disable your antivirus software Open your antivirus software and temporarily disable any “Realtime” system protection. You should reenable it after the exam has completed. 5. If you have Mac OSX 10.9 or above, allow applications downloaded from the internet Open your System Preferences and select Security & Privacy. Click the lock in the lower left corner to make changes and enter your Mac password. Under the Allow apps downloaded from section, select Anywhere. 6. Disable or uninstall any camera or recording software x If you have installed the Panopto recorder on your laptop, you will need to uninstall it and restart your laptop. x On your PC open the Windows Task Manager by pressing CtrlShiftEsc. Look for any applications that have “cam”, “camera”, “rec”, or “record” in the name of the application and press the End Process button to stop the process. x If you have a Mac, open the Activity Monitor application. Locate and select the Image Capture Extension process. Click the black X icon found in the upper left corner of Activity monitor to force the process to quit. After completing these steps you will be ready to download and run the NBME Secure Browser from http://wbt.nbme.org/exam.
