AIMS To provide students with the basic definitions with regard to the Internet and the SPDC Intranet. Practical exposure will be provided primarily through the use of basic Internet services and in the development of web pages. LEARNING OUTCOMES On satisfactory completion of the unit the student will be able to: 1. Define the terms Internet and Intranet. 2. Learn to work with the SPDC Intranet and the Internet effectively with regards to finding and collecting information using the SPDC and Internet search engines. 3. Work with basic Internet services like Ping, Telnet, File Transfer Protocol (FTP), email and Internet relay Chat (IRC). 4. Discuss the role of the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) in presenting web sites and create basic web pages using HTML. 5. Use a software package known as Microsoft FrontPage 98 to construct a simple Web site. INDICATIVE MODULE CONTENT Course Outline History of the Internet, Web Addresses or URLs, WWW Browsers, Search Engines, Internet Resources. SPDC Intranet - it’s features and infrastructure.     INDICATIVE STUDENT WORKLOAD The student workload for the module is indicated below.

    MODE OF DELIVERY Key concepts are introduced and illustrated through the medium of lectures.

    However, the main emphasis in focused on the laboratory sessions in which the

    student will progress through a series of graded exercises which are intended to

    enhance the students understanding and also to develop proficiency in the

    practical application of the Internet.

    ASSESSMENT PLAN There is only one assessment to take at the end of the course. This assessment

    will examine the practical skills attained by the student. To pass the course all

    laboratories must be completed. The lecturer will check that this is the case

    periodically. The lecturer may ask the students to hand in work at any time.
