Moving from a large family home to an inner-city Sydney terrace posed a few challenges for Sarah and her husband Alastair, not least how they were going to accommodate their existing

pieces. The answer, the couple found, was to dispose of the majority of their belongings and ask interior designer Victoria Waters for help. Their vision of a home with a classical vibe that wouldn’t date has been realised beautifully, particularly in the elegant master bedroom. The wall behind the custom bedhead was extended and levelled to produce twin alcoves either side of the bed that Victoria has lined in mirrors. “Having the high bedhead and mirrors on the back of the joinery adds depth to the room, and makes it feel taller and longer,” says Victoria. Linen curtains frame the windows, while the wall was papered in a covering with a shimmer, adding the touch of luxury Sarah desired.

Who lives here? Sarah, who runs her own PR company; her husband Alastair, the owner of a medical equipment business; and their adult daughter, Alexandra.Original room: A bedroom on the first floor of a Sydney terrace.Time frame: Four months. Why the makeover? “When we moved, we soon realised that our furniture didn’t fit with this style of house,” says Sarah. Interior designer Victoria was called in to tackle a revamp throughout, including the main bedroom. The works: The walls were uneven and not quite straight. Therefore, to accommodate joinery on either side of the bed, Victoria had a false wall built behind the bedhead to even it out and allow the joinery to sit symmetrically.Major changes: Along with new mirror-backed shelving either side of the bedhead, the room was given a complete decorating overhaul from the ground up, with new flooring, finishes and furniture.Lessons learned: “If you are using an interior designer, it’s important to agree on the overall design from the outset,” says Sarah. “We had different ideas about colours and finishes, but ultimately we were confident of Victoria’s ability to ensure everything would work perfectly together.”

DESIGNER’S TIP: “I like wallpaper as a bedroom feature,” says interior designer Victoria Waters. “It offers the opportunity to do something different. It’s rare that I would do a whole room in it, usually just a section. It’s like an art piece. It adds a splash of your personality on that wall,” she says.

“I WASN’T SURE ABOUT THE mirrors IN THE bedroom JOINERY AT FIRST, BUT

I THINK THEY LOOK great. I LOVE IT!”

The custom cabinetry and mirror-backed shelving was finished in Dulux’s Whisper White. Heavy ‘Logan’ curtains in Chinese Blue, made by Decorating Recycled, were extended from above the French windows embrasure to the floor, which helps visually elongate the room.
