ENGINEERED SOLUTIONS

Velan’s Engineering Design and Applications Group iscomprised of approximately 50 professional engineerswith extensive experience in critical applications across a broad range of industries. Equipped with advancedsoftware applications, including finite element analysis(FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and 3D solidmodeling, Velan engineers design superior quality valvesthat meet the most demanding performance require-ments. Velan’s R&D facilities, equipped with steam boilersand superheaters, flow loops and cryogenic test stands, provide the company with extensive testing capabilities.

Whether we are refining the design of our standardvalves, or engineering valves to meet the demands of aspecific application, Velan’s vast engineering resourcescan handle the task. In fact, Velan has a long history ofpartnering with major architect/engineers, electric utilitiesand other end users to develop innovative solutions fortheir valving needs.

THETRIPLE-OFFSET GEOMETRY

OFFSET 1: The shaft is offset behind the seat axis toallow complete sealing contact around theentire seat.

OFFSET 2: The shaft centerline is offset from the pipeand valve which provides interference freeopening and closing of the valve.

OFFSET 3: The seat cone axis is offset from theshaft centerline to eliminate frictionduring closing and opening and to achieve uniform compressivesealing around the entire seat.

THE LAMINATED DISC SEALTorque seating during closing of the valve providesuniform forces around the entire circumference of thevalve seat. The resilient seal flexes and energizes, assuming the shape of the seat. The compression forcesequally distributed around the perimeter provide a tight bi-directional shut off. The resiliency of the seal allows thevalve body and disc to contract or expand, without the riskof jamming due to temperature fluctuations. It is self-adjusting.

The Velan Triple-Offset Butterfly Valve provides a bi-directional bubble tight shut-off. This geometry ensuresthat the disc seal contacts the body seat only at the final

shut-off position without rubbing or galling, providing atorque generated resilient seal with sufficient “wedging”to ensure a uniform seal contact.

Raised, conical seat prevents solids build-up frominterfering with the seal. Seat is hardfaced with Stellite tomeet severe service (in lieu of soft 316SS hardfacing).

● STANDARD LAMINATEDRESILIENT DISC SEALTO 800°F (427°C)One to four graphite layers arecarefully assembled betweenstainless steel rings and graphiteusing phenolic resin bond. Solid seal rings are available forabrasive services as well as hightemperature applications up to1112ºF (600ºC).

● "ZERO LEAKAGE" - SEAT TIGHTNESS (API 598 RESILIENT SEAT STANDARD)The disc seal, evenly compressed around itscircumference, produces a wedging effect which flexesthe seal ring and reacts like a spring. The resilient sealassures "zero leakage" of liquids or gases to API 598 -resilient seat standard. Resiliency in the seal allows discmovement during thermal cycles while retaining tightshutoff as shown.

● NO CAVITY There is no cavity to allow build-up of solids.

● ONE-PIECE SHAFTLarge diameter shaft for safety is connected to the discclose to the bearings to absorb loads with taper pin and key to allow for differential expansion due totemperature.

● SHAFT BEARINGSThe shaft is centered on two long bearings, chromed, nitrided, or as stellite (option) protected against theentrance of solids by bearing seals which are standard on Torqseal valves.

● LOW EMISSION SHAFT SEALS 0–100 ppmShaft is burnished to 8 RMS, ID of packing chamber finish 32 RMS. Live-loading available for longmaintenance-free service. Easy access for packingadjustment. (See page 8–9 for details and alternative stem seals.)

● CERTIFIED TO API 591, PED & ASME N (UPON REQUEST)

The Torqseal’s advanced design features three-wayeccentricity and unique elliptical seat geometry ensuringcompressive sealing around the entire seat and a “tight”,bubble free valve.

Special High Performance Packingis installed and then compressed using glandbolting to approximately 80% of its "free length".

The inherent sealing ability due to its cup andcone technology and excellent quality of materialshas been proven in standard and very difficultvalve applications, all backed up by an intensiveresearch program.

2. STEM SEAL WITH “0” HELIUM BUBBLES

As a result of extensive tests conducted by Velan between1966 and 1972, a new technology emerged at the time for high performance, leakproof, long life, and low main-tenance stem seals for nuclear power, now available forall industries and applications.

Velan is continuing its efforts in updating the low emis-sion technology which, in the case of butterfly valves, concerns the stem seal alone (no body-bonnet joint) to newly emerging standards.

provides predictable and constant packingcompression for morethan 5000 cycles beforeadjustment or re-packing.

The new European specification, called TA-LUFT which is controlled by a section of the German TUV agency(Technischer Überwachungs-Verein), demands a maxi-mum leakage of less than 1 ppm (0.0014 ppm) for criticalvalves. Certification issued after extensive pressure and

cycling tests with H.P. helium, witnessed by TA-LUFTinspectors, assures the design and performance of agiven stem seal to be equivalent to a bellows seal design.Velan has qualified two different stem seal designs to theTA-LUFT regulations.

RELIABILITY THROUGH FUNCTIONAL QUALIFICATIONReliability of valve operation affects service life andmaintenance. To predict reliability, a sound valve design, backed up by a stress analysis must be subjected to func-tional cycle testing under critical operating conditions.

To develop the Velan Torqseal Triple-Offset Metal-SeatedButterfly valves, it required an unusual effort and exten-ded period of time as many competitive valves in thesame category, tested in our R&D, showed repeated leaksof seats and laminated disc gaskets. Some highlights ofthe tests performed in our R&D laboratory are shownhere. Detailed reports are available on request.

8” Class 150 valve - ambient cycling.

AMBIENT CYCLING TESTSValve passed: 5000 Cycles with preferred flow direction, 3000 Cycles with nonpreferred flow direction and zeroleakage at seats and gasket.

Also tested 8” Class 300 to 30,000 cycles with no jamming.

ACCEPTABLE RESULTSAPI 598 resilient seat standard for laminated seal.

AIR AND ELECTRIC ACTUATORSVelan supplies high quality actuators for pneumatically, electrically and hydraulically operated butterfly valves. All actuators are totally enclosed. All moving parts arepermanently lubricated. Actuators can be installed in thefield although it is preferable that they be installed andtested in the factory.

ACTUATION GUIDELINESThe Torqseal Triple-Offset design concept of theTorqseal Butterfly Valve differs from that of a standardquarter-turn valve in terms of seating characteristic.

A typical valve (i.e. ball or high performance butterfly)is position seated and has a set rotation of 0 to 90º.In order to prevent over-traveling when automating this type of valve, travel stops are used on airoperators and limit switches on motor operators.

The Torqseal Triple-Offset Butterfly Valve, on the otherhand, is torque seated and requires a set torque fromthe operator to fully close the valve. Because of thischaracteristic, there is no defined seating position, and in general the valve requires 5-10º of over-travelfor a tight seal. Therefore, the travel stop or limitswitch should not be used on the closed position.

The actuator’s closing torque, properly sized for theapplication and valve size, should be used instead. In order to protect the valve stem, this torque should

always be limited by either: a) The torque switch in a motor operator. b) The spring torque in a fail-closed air operator.c) A regulator for a double-acting or fail-open

air operator.
