The High Costof HatredBy Winifred Wilkinson

Recently I heard two little girls talking. One declared vehemently: “I hate Joan.’The other child asked, "How come?"

I didn't hear the rest of the conversation, but I couldn't help repeating to myself, "Howcome?" Why do so many people waste theirtime, energy, and emotions inhating? What do they expect toaccomplish by this negativespending of the emotional nature?Hatred does not accomplish anygood thing.

But it does cost the person whohates more than anyone can affordto pay. It takes its toll in thoughtpower, emotional disturbance, andphysical wear and tear. If allowed tocontinue, hatred will rob the individual ofsuccess, health, and peace of mind.

"How come?" Why do people hate? How does it come about that one person canactually feel such a strong dislike for anotherthat he speaks of hating or despising thatone?

Very often the words are anexaggeration of the emotion felt, but even thebasic emotion of ill will (expressed orunexpressed) is an error that will not beperpetuated by one who wants to live happilyand productively.

Sometimes people even hate themselves, andthus close the door to all possibilities of abetter life.

If you find yourself feeling any ill will, stop and ask yourself:

"How come? How did this come about? What caused it? How can it becorrected? Why am I allowing it tointerfere with the good I could bedoing and having?"

Then replace ill will withgoodwill. Hatred is an expensivetoy that is tolerated only by animmature mind. The matureindividual is too busy to give timeand attention to little petty hatreds,

or even to big ones. He is too busy lookingfor good to concentrate on error.

The best answer to hatred is theexpression of love, a great divine love thatlooks past the wrong to find good in everyperson and in every situation.

Perhaps at first it seems difficult to wipeout a feeling of dislike and replace it with thetotally positive quality of love. But it can bedone.

When you decide you don't want theeffects of hatred in your life, you'll make theeffort, and you'll reach the point where thenegative emotion is completely dissolved inlove. You can't afford to harbor hatred.

Let God ChooseAfter the sudden,

tragic death of his sonChristopher, Pastor GregLaurie told of shoppingwith him in the late ’70s.He told Christopher to

pick out a Star Wars toy, and the boychose a small Hans Solo from thebottom shelf. Meanwhile, Laurie waslooking up at the Millennium Falconspacecraft.

“Why don’t we get this to gowith your new figure?” he said.Christopher’s eyes lit up as he huggedhis dad.

Laurie says, “Christophereventually learned that when we werein a toy store and I asked what hewanted, his best bet was to say, ‘Youchoose, Dad!’ And I’d always get himsomething better than he would’vechosen for himself.”

Don’t be afraid to let God“choose” for you, Laurie says. “God’splans for you will always be betterthan your plans for yourself.”

Are you God’s Wife? While working at a shoe store in

downtown Truro, Nova Scotia, Inoticed a little boy standing on thehot-air register outside the bakeryshop next door in his bare feet, tryingto keep warm.

I was unsure whether to invitethe boy into the store, or just what todo with him, when a [woman] cameby. After a few words with thebarefoot boy, she brought him into theshoe store. She bought him new shoesand heavy woolen socks, for which he

tried awkwardly to thank her. “Areyou God’s wife?” he asked hisbenefactor.

Taken aback by the question, shetook some time before replying, “No,son, I’m just one of his children.”

“Well, I knew you must be somekin to him,” he said as he thanked heragain and ran out the door.

A Far-reaching TouchAs we move around this world

and as we act with kindness, perhaps,or with indifference or with hostilitytoward the people we meet, we aresetting the great spider web atremble. The life that I touch for good or illwill touch another life, and that, inturn, another, until who knows wherethe trembling stops or in what farplace my touch will be felt.

-Frederick Buechner

Inspiration and PersistenceChicago teacher Jack Canfield

was having trouble persuading hisinner-city students to want to learn. Many thought they were unable tograsp the lessons Canfield was tryingto teach. Many lacked self-confidenceand motivation.

One day, while meditating,Canfield had a vision. What if hecollected stories by or about peoplewho had overcome obstacles of allsorts? Wouldn’t that be like chickensoup for the soul?

Canfield joined with a friend,Mark Victor Hansen, and togetherthey began to collect inspirationalstories about people who hadovercome handicaps or personalproblems to succeed in life. They tookthe final collection to 140 bookpublishers before they found one thatwould print it. That book became abest seller and encouraged them topublish several other “Chicken Soup”books. There are now 100 millioncopies of these books in print.

Like the people in their books,Canfield and Hansen overcameobstacles on the way to sharing theirinspiration. They believe that theywere led by the hand of God.

Demonstrating the Law

"The explanation of all yourproblems, the explanation of yourdifficulties and the explanation ofyour triumphs in life boil down tothis: Life is a state of consciousness. That is the beginning and the end. That is the final step in metaphysics. All the other steps but lead up tothat," declares Emmet Fox.What do we mean by consciousness? One meaning of the word is to beawake instead of being asleep(unconsciousness). We use the term tomean awareness. Imelda Shanklindefines consciousness as "a directknowledge or perception of an object, state, or sensation." It is composed ofall your ideas, all your beliefs, all thethings that you accept as valid, founded on fact; the basis for whatyou believe or act upon in yourpersonal life.

If you look at an object and thinkof it as you look at it, you are awareof it. You take a deep breath becausethe air is exhilarating, and you areconscious of the weather. You listenwith rapt attention to music on theradio because the theme awakens amemory: you are conscious of themusic. Or you may pass by an object, walk through the out-of-doors, hearbut not hearken to the music, becauseyour consciousness is focusedelsewhere. In consciousness you arewhere your thoughts and feelings are. Thus in effect you are often closest ofall to those whom you love the mostand who love you in return, notnecessarily because they arephysically close by, but because theydominate your thoughts and feelingsabove other factors in yourexperience.

In the community where you dwellthere are manifold ways of occupyingyour leisure time. You do not evenknow of some of them; you areoblivious or averse to others. Certainones you seek out and respond to.Perhaps no two of us live in quite thesame world, because we do not have

identical consciousnesses. Out of theinfinite possibilities of the manifestcreation, you occupy a certain place, aplace made up less of time and spacethan of consciousness. Change yourconsciousness, and you change yourworld-that is, the world to which yourespond.

Your consciousness comprisesyour thoughts, feelings, attitudes; theway you look at things. Until youchange this outlook on life, nothingelse changes for You. "What'er thoulovest, man,

That too become thou must:God, if thou lovest God, Dust, if

thou lovest dust."It is a basic Truth of life that things

come to us, not by chance but by thelaw of cause and effect; as themanifestation of our consciousness. All that we are and have and do maybe explained in terms ofconsciousness. There are other waysof accounting for the variances in thehuman condition, but they are anteriorto this. The body in which wefunction, the house in which we live, the kind of work we do, the kind ofpeople we meet, are the expression ofour consciousness at the time.

To place in a world of sin, sickness, lack, and death a humanityendowed with the capacity to enjoyand the longing to attain to health, joy, bounty, and life, but with theseforever out of reach-this could only bethe work of some diabolical fiend!Yet this is what many people believeto be the work of God.

A Misconception

This conception of life isresponsible for untold misery andsorrow. It has bathed the world intears and has made the song of life adirge to millions of men. Yet it isuntrue. It is the tragic mistake that hasbeen made in human minds. Theworld is not a world of sorrow unlesswe so conceive it and live it. There isnot a good desire of the human heartbut has its logical, legitimate, andpossible fulfillment.

Desire is prophetic of its ownfulfillment. The persistent desire and

urge within man to overcome thesenegations is the soul's affirmation, "Ican!" to the world's assertion, "Youcannot!" Human problems, sickness, crises, death are not the execution ofGod's judgment but the effects ofGod-exclusion.

In a sin-sick world of illusions, thepersistent upward urge of the soulcries out against the falsity of what wefear and dread and suffer from. It isthe evidence to material sense of areality that transcends material sense. It is the voice of the higher selfdeclaring the falsity of our belief inevil, and pronouncing God's work-asHe did in the beginning good. Heedthat voice, live by it, persist in it, andgradually you will find the burdenslightened, the sorrows dispelled, asyou claim your good and press yourclaim.

It is not possible to demonstratechange in body and affairs withoutundergoing a change within ourself. You always will and always must getthe conditions that belong to yourconsciousness. You cannot cheat thelaws of being. Men seldomdeliberately choose sickness, misery, despair in life; but unwittingly theyhave chosen ways of thought, feeling, and attitude that invite these elementsinto their experience. Life is like anecho or a mirror that reflects back tous in form what we have radiatedfrom within ourself.

Nothing can overcome you butyour belief in your own weakness andfutility. Nothing can make you strongbut the discovery of your ownstrength. Claim your good and pressyour claim. Affirm, "I am strong inthe Lord, and in the power of Hismight.”

The thoughts of your mind, consciously or unconsciouslyentertained, are responsible for whatappears in your experience as facts. The desires of the heart are thepromptings of Spirit, ever urging youto think more truly. The two, mindand heart, must be united in purposeand activity, before the shadows canbe dispelled and the light of God'sgood world be made to shine through

Page 5: Wings...Wings FIRST UNITY CHURCH – Serving the spiritual needs of the St. Louis community for over eighty-five years. The Newsletter of First Unity Church Of Saint Louis ...

the mist of appearances. What is meant by "think more

truly"? All that is real (true) in anyexperience is the good. The evil inthings exists, but only in a relative ortransient sense; that is, it exists to ourconsciousness or understanding, ourpoint of view. In the absolute orenduring sense it has no reality. Itsexistence is comparable to the good asshadows to sunlight. "When theperfect [the good, the true] comes [inconsciousness] , the imperfect willpass away." Therefore to become freefrom the "shadow" of evil we mustbecome increasingly conscious of the"light" of good. This is what Jesusmeant when He said: "If your eye issound, your whole body will be full oflight; but if your eye is not sound, your whole body will be full of dark-ness. If then the light in you isdarkness, how great is the darkness.

Everything seems real to thestate of consciousness to which it isrelated, but may be only a shadow ofthe reality of a higher plane ofconsciousness; as the shadow of ahand might be real to a shadow worldbut is only a poor intimation of what ahand is to the three-dimensionalworld.

Bring in the Light

To demonstrate the good we mustbe so much imbued with it that oursight is centered upon it, and evilceases to exist 'except in the sense thatwe recognize it for what it is, atemporal appearance, a shadow, apicture upon a screen. To lovegoodness is not the same as to fear orcombat evil. One does not fightshadows; one brings in light and theshadows are dispelled. Nor does itseem altogether practical to deny theappearance of evil, which oftenarouses the resistance of the intellectand merely gives us something else towork out. Better to acknowledge it forwhat it is, the projection of humanthought: "Yes, I see it, but I do notaccept it." As in a dream state, assailed by a terrifying adversary, Isuddenly realize that I am only

dreaming, and declare, "You have noreality. You only seem real because Ihave dreamed you into being. I willopen my eyes and you will be gone!"

One of the commandments thatMoses received from God (Exod. 20:16) was, "You shall not bear falsewitness." False witness is testimony toor acknowledgment of that which isfalse-the appearance of evil. "As forme and my house, we will serve theLord," declared Joshua; which isanother way of expressing the sameconcept. Or as a well-knownmetaphysical teacher once said, whenasked if she expected another worldwar, "If it comes, it will not be by anypower of thought and feeling I give toit!"

Regardless of appearances, ourconstant privilege and duty is to bearwitness to what is true, honest just, pure, lovely, of good report. "If thereis any excellence, if there is anythingworthy of praise, think about thesethings," as Paul admonished thePhilippians.

Such an attitude toward life-theacceptance of a concept of universallaws, and the endeavor to apply themin individual experience-marks thedifference between the type ofreligious belief that centers around theaggrandizement of an individual orreligious hierarchy and the morepragmatic attitude of centering uponthe application of the spiritual truthsthe right use of which made suchleaders renowned. Thus, in seeking toapply the teachings of Christianity,we center our attention less upon theteachings about Jesus Christ thanupon the teachings of Jesus Christ. For "you shall know the truth, and thetruth will make you free," and "If youknow these things, blessed are you ifyou do them," or again, "I will put mylaw within them, and I will write itupon their hearts; and I will be theirGod, and they shall be my people," asGod said to the prophet Jeremiah.

"Gird thyself with incessantaffirmatives." In whatever situationyou are experiencing, think what inthe nature of God and your eternalbeing is the Truth about it. Usually

when you are concerned about humanrelations there is likely to be "yourway, their way, and the right way," soyou can arrive at a statement of Truth(an affirmation) that embodies theprinciple involved, and you may say"All things conform to the right thing, under grace and perfect law. " In theface of a physical or bodily challenge, you may conclude, "This is the way itappears, but if it is not God's will forme it can be changed, and God's willfor me is not infirmity but glowinglife and health.”

None of us can make a thing trueby affirming it to be true, if in theultimate nature of things it is not true;but if in the sight of God it is true, then affirming that truth helps tomake it true in fact and in personalexperience, as it is in the eternalnature of being.

Trial and Error

The fact that somewhere in theremote past mankind elected to takethe path of human experience, of trialand error, rather than the way ofconstant attunement to the will of Godthrough incessant prayer andmeditation, may account for many ofthe difficulties in which from time totime we find ourselves. But this is afact too often used as an excuse forour shortcomings, rather than simplyan explanation of them.

God, whose other name is love,"does not rejoice at wrong, butrejoices in the right." And as Paulsaid, "The written code kills, but theSpirit gives life." So it is not howmany church services we attend, orhow many study courses we havecompleted, but what we have learnedactually to apply in daily living thatbrings us into a higher state ofawareness. We must build aconsciousness of the all-pervadinggood, and not be overcome by theappearance of evil.

Transiently (that is, in terms ofconsciousness) we are sons of earth;but eternally, in the true nature ofbeing, we are sons of God and heaven. Most of our human striving isactually, though not always con-

Page 6: Wings...Wings FIRST UNITY CHURCH – Serving the spiritual needs of the St. Louis community for over eighty-five years. The Newsletter of First Unity Church Of Saint Louis ...

sciously, devoted to becomingconsciously that which we eternallyare; that which we see objectified inthe person of Jesus, the Christ. And itis helpful to remind ourself repeatedlythat Jesus is the name of the man ofNazareth, Christ a title to indicate theGod-idea of perfect man; man incomplete dominion as the "only [ortruly] begotten son of the Father."

How shall we become like Him?How shall we transformconsciousness so that it understandsand expresses the divine idea?

If, day by day, we drop into thesubconscious phase of mind thematerials that will give us strength, then automatically, in the moment ofour need as it arises, we shall findstrength to meet the need. If we dropinto the subconscious the materialsthat will give us patience, by the sametoken when patience is needed, wewill find that we have it without evenconsciously recognizing it, so that ifsomeone should remark that we seemto have more patience than mostpersons, it will surprise us.

What is meant by "dropping intothe subconscious phase of mind" thematerials or qualities we aspire tomanifest?

Act on Convictions

It is very simple, though to saythat it is simple is not quite the samething as to say it is easy. Simply this:Act out in a small way what youwould like to manifest in a large way.If you aspire to be calm and serene inlarge matters, cultivate the habit ofmeeting small matters calmly andserenely. If you tend to lose yourtemper easily, cultivate the habit ofviewing the little vexing annoyancesof every day with equanimity, evenwith a sense of humor. If you have afear of the dark, cultivate the habit ofthinking of all the lovely and pleasantthings about darkness; how seedssprout in the darkness of earth; howfalling asleep in the security andcomfort of your darkened bedroomrelaxes body, mind, and emotionsfrom the activities of the day that is

past, and prepares you for the day tocome.

Whatever, in such ways, youdrop into your subconscious phase ofmind will "automatically, in themoment of your need as it arises,"well up from the subconscious tostrengthen and support you. Thesuccess of this way of demonstrationis in action, not words. Act out insmall ways what you want to attain toin large ways. Can you keep yourpoise when someone accuses youfalsely of some shortcomings? Whensomeone is late to an appointment? When there is a delay in traffic, orsomething goes wrong with your car?"I never become angry with people, but I certainly become annoyed withthings!" is the testimony of onestudent who started working with thisway of demonstration. Perhaps theopposite is true of other students. Bothare on the way of attainment. Meetingsmall challenges in a poised, adultmanner, giving things a light touch, prepares us for the larger issues oflife.

Will power seems often to bedisparaged among Truth students, yetrightly exercised it becomes theservant of man's demonstrable highernature. Let a man have the will to findwork if he is out of a job, and he isvery likely to come up with not only ajob but a superior position. Let himhave the will to be well, and the innateforces of health within him respond tohis clarion call. For the will to attaincan become a constructive habit ofman's inner nature, giving power anddirection to his life.

By the same token, what mightbe called "won't power" can be ahelpful complement to will power. Itis will power in disguise. When a mandeclares to himself, "I won't lose mytemper," he is willing to control histemper. When he says, "I won't let myfear of strangers overcome me," he issaying in effect, "I reach out towardfriendliness," or as somemetaphysicians put it, "The Christ inme greets the Christ in you." But itmust be a thought that does not stopwith words. The Chinese have a

saying that a picture is worth athousand words. We might paraphrasethis to assert that one action is betterthan a thousand words-unless thethousand words lead to an inspiredright action. And another fortifyingthought is contained in a saying youmay have learned in Sunday School:

"Sow a thought, you reap a word.Sow a word, you reap an act.Sow an act, you reap a habit.Sow a habit, you reap a character!”

. . . From Page One

It is a mistake to hate anything oranybody, a mistake that will be costlyin the long run. Hate another person, and you reap the negative harvest ofhatred in spoiled friendships, missedopportunities, and physical reactions.Hate your job, and you automaticallygive up all chance for realadvancement, success, and prosperity.Hate your surroundings, and yourhome or your office becomes a jailcell, containing only frustration andunhappiness.
