Alberto Giacometti is widely regarded as one of the most
important and distinctive artists of the twentieth century.
A restless innovator, he explored a range of styles and
subjects; however portraiture remained a continuous
preoccupation.
This major exhibition is the first to focus on Giacometti’s
portraits and spans his entire career. The show includes
important paintings, sculpture and drawings within
sections devoted to each of his principal models, and
illuminates Giacometti’s obsessive evocation of a human
presence.

The Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2015 is
the leading international competition which celebrates
and promotes the very best in contemporary portrait
photography. The Prize upholds a reputation for its
diversity of photographic styles submitted by a range of

prestigious prizes including the £12,000 first prize.
DisplaysThe changing programme of displays provides fresh
opportunities to discover the Gallery’s rich and varied

Floor 2 Room 5Van Dyck: Transforming British Art
Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599 – 1641) was the most
influential portrait painter ever to work in Britain. This
display looks at the artist’s work and how he
transformed British portraiture. Comprising portraits from
the Gallery’s own Collection, supplemented by two
rarely-seen paintings of King Charles I and Henrietta
Maria from Chequers, the self-portrait is set alongside
other works by the artist, paintings from his studio and
portraits by his contemporaries and followers.

Across the GallerySimon Schama’s Face of Britain
Historian Simon Schama has joined with National
Portrait Gallery curators to take a fresh look at the
Collection and present a cross-period exploration of the
history of Britain through portraiture. Focusing on the
themes of Power, Love, Fame, Self and People, he asks
what makes a successful portrait and what this tells us
about the individual and collective psyche of the time.
Simon Schama’s accompanying five-part BBC series,
with an associated book published by Viking Penguin, is
broadcast this autumn.

Creative Connections showcases new work created by
photographer Kate Peters and young people from
Haverstock School in Camden. The photographic series
responds to the lives, achievements and attributes of
creative, visionary and pioneering people, past and
present in the Gallery’s photography collection with a
connection to Camden. Exhibited alongside the
Collection, the display offers a playful invitation to
explore the relationship between the two.

Myerscough
This display of paintings by Chantal Joffe and Ishbel
Myerscough explores the artists’ friendship and shared
history, which dates back to their student days at
Glasgow School of Art. In their self-portraits and
portraits of each other and their children they attempt to
search out what it feels like to be each other and, in turn,
themselves.

Inayat Khan
Shrabani Basu, author of Spy Princess, traces the story
of Noor Inayat Khan from her birth in Moscow to her
death in a concentration camp in Germany and looks at
the spirit that moved her.

Van Dyck: Transforming British Art
Emily Burns, Assistant Curator, explores how the 17th-
century Flemish painter, Sir Anthony van Dyck,
transformed the face of British portraiture.

Remembering Edith Cavell
Edith Cavell is remembered as a heroine of the First
World War, executed in Brussels by the occupying
German army for her role as a resistance worker.
Cavell’s biographer Diana Souhami reassesses her true
legacy.
5 November
Fashioning the Face of Britain: Clothing and Power at
the Stuart Court
At Stuart court it was important to dress to impress if you
wanted power and prestige. Historian Jacqui Ansell
decodes the sartorial signals of the sumptuous Stuart
courts in the era of Peake, Mytens and Van Dyck.
19 November
A Curious Colony: Leicester Square and the Swiss
As part of the Giacometti programme, Peter Barber,
former Head of Cartographic and Topographic
Material at the British Library, looks at the history of the
Swiss association with Leicester Square and its
neighbourhoods.

Painting Yourself into the Past
Paint yourself into the 17th century using Sir Anthony
van Dyck’s self portrait as inspiration. Join artist Robin-
Lee Hall for a two-day workshop creating self-portraits
and exploring Van Dyck’s methods. Suitable for all
abilities.
26 – 27 September
Photography: Portraits of Power
Photographer Giles Price leads a two-day practical
photographic workshop investigating depictions of
strength and power. Inspired by military portraits in the
Collection and Giles’ own work with servicemen and
women, you will work with a model in uniform to capture
these innate qualities. This workshop is suitable for
those who already have some knowledge of digital
photography and know how to use their cameras in
manual mode.
10 – 11 October
Beardsley’s Line
Aubrey Beardsley’s distinctive line drawings and
illustrations brought him notoriety and continue to be
influential despite his short life. Taking inspiration from
Beardsley’s work, artist Sara Lee will guide you through
the process of preparing, cutting and printing a relief
block print. Suitable for all abilities.
24 – 25 October
Practical Portrait Photography
Photographer Othello De’Souza- Hartley leads a two-
day workshop looking at light and composition. Inspired
by the Collection and under expert guidance you will
develop your technique, experiment with studio and
natural lighting, learn how to master fill-in flash and use
props. This workshop is suitable for those who already
have some knowledge of digital photography and know
how to use their cameras in manual mode.
14 – 15 November
The Quest for Reality: Giacometti & Uglow
Artist Andy Pankhurst examines the shared attempts of
Alberto Giacometti and figurative artist Euan Uglow to
realise a pictorial equivalent of reality. Explore these
abstract and analytical concepts whilst working from a
two-day sustained life model pose, combined with
exhibition entry and gallery talks. Suitable for all abilities.
28 – 29 November

Taking inspiration from the Taylor Wessing

The Visitors’ Choir £35/£30For the first time, Gallery visitors are invited to form a
choir, rehearse together and perform alongside
members of The Portrait Choir at Late Shift. The
Visitors’ Choir will rehearse at the Gallery from 10.30 –
17.00 on Sunday 29 November and the performance will
take place on Friday 4 December at 19.30 with a short
rehearsal beforehand.

Walk the Line
A week of ticketed and drop-in sessions inspired by
Giacometti: Pure Presence. During the week families will
have the opportunity to work with clay, plaster and wire
to construct 3D models. The 14.30 Workshop on Mon
26 October will be BSL interpreted.

Explore 2D and 3D representation in response to
Giacometti: Pure Presence. Led by artists Jasleen Kaur
and Robin-Lee Hall.
Pick up a Pencil, 14.00 – 16.00
Hosted by the Gallery’s Youth Forum, use a wide range
of materials and be inspired by the Gallery’s Collection
in these friendly drop-in drawing sessions which take
place on the third Saturday of every month. To get
started, all you have to do is pick up a pencil, no need to
book.

In this tense thriller for which Hepburn received her final
Oscar nomination, she plays a young blind woman who

bulb in her apartment. Directed by Terence Young, 108
