Optional Homework Y5 first half of Term 1 These are optional tasks that you can choose to do this half term. Talk to your parents about which tasks you would like to complete and how many is realistic for you to do really well. There is no expectation that you will complete all of them! The tasks can be handed in at any time but the final date is Sunday 22 nd October. We have put an idea of how many effort points might be awarded for the homework if you do a really good job. Have fun choosing and we look forward to seeing some really creative, quality work from you. Creative/Art/DT Viking art is called Norse Art. The Vikings did not create works of art simply to be admired but they were a very artistic people. They added carvings to just about everything, carvings of signs, symbols, dragons and other beasts. Those items that could not be carved were colourfully decorated with embroidery and patches. They decorated everything, no matter how small or humble. Their art was ornate, with complicated patterns that took a great deal of work and talent to create. When they could, they added silver wire to objects like axe handles to give them greater beauty and strength. Choose one of these tasks: 1) Design an ornate and carefully patterned figurehead which would be used to scare their enemies on a Viking longship. You could make a drawing, painting or collage. 1 or 2 effort points 2) Make a small model of a Viking longship – you could use paper or card or any other material you want to. Try to make it as realistic as you can and include as many authentic details as you can. 1, 2 or 3 effort points.

Cookery

Cook a 3 course meal for your family. Take photos of you cooking and of the food you prepare. Present the photos with captions as a page using a program like publisher. Remember to add captions to your photographs. This will also count as a credit towards your BSAK award.

Science

1) Prove that you know and understand the spellings and meaning of the following key words:

You can make a video or poster, use diagrams, draw pictures, take photographs, write a song or a poem… be creative! You need to be ready to share it with the class. 1,2 or 3 effort points

2) Keep an exercise diary for 2 weeks detailing all of the exercise that you do and the amount of time you spend exercising. You could use the Excel program to keep the diary. 2 or 3 effort points

English

1) Write an acrostic poem about an aspect of the Vikings. Handwrite it in your neatest handwriting and present it well decorated with appropriate pictures and drawings. 1 or 2 effort points.

2) Find out about Kennings and write one or two kennings with a Viking theme. Use publisher or word to present them. 1 or 2 effort points

3) Read a Norse Myth and create a storyboard to retell the story. You could use word and type the words underneath your pictures if you wanted to. 2 or 3 effort points

4)Use one of the story starters below to write an imaginative and creative short story. You can word process it or handwrite it. Please keep it to within 2 sides of A4 paper. 1,2 or 3 effort points
