ASM 3M - Photomontage ProjectName: ______________What does Montage mean?The word Montage comes from the French verb monter “to put together”. Montage can beused to describe a wide range of creative practices that could include photography, film, and sound. Assembling techniques can include but are not limited to repetition, juxtaposition, sequencing, appropriation, and manipulation.

We will be creating photomontages that demonstrate our understanding of the elements and principles of design, while referencing traditional art of the past- Cubism (Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque) and the work of David Hockney.

Cubism was an early 20th-century style and movement in art that was pioneered by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braques. Paintings and collages were created where the idea of perspective with a single viewpoint was abandoned and use was made of simple

geometric shapes, and interlocking planes.

ASSIGNMENT

Create a digital photomontage using the work of the Cubists and David Hockney as inspiration.

1. Select a high resolution photograph that you would like to use for your montage. If you can use a photo that you have taken, that would be great! Think about what you want the meaning of your piece to be and choose a photo that works.

2. Choose one geometric shape that you would like to use in your piece.

3. Separate your photo into different sized segments of that shape and alter the values, colours and textures to create an interesting composition keeping in mind the principles of design.
