Introduction

The Renault 4CV Register of Australia (the Register) is a national organisation which rightly attempts to base the biennial Musters in places which are conveniently located for all members. To that end, there has long been an agreement that Musters should be sited somewhere in western NSW. While this favours NSW members, it is recognised that no better arrangement is possible, given the geography of Australia and the distribution of members.

Bob Gray has been involved with the Register since it’s inception. Phil Harrison has been involved with the Register for many years. We are both enthusiastic participants in the Musters. We are both based in Brisbane. We both enjoy the drive from Brisbane to the Musters as treat it as an attractive part of the event. Also, we are both long-standing members of the Renault Car Club of Queensland (RCCQ).

We both actively try to promote the Register and Musters to RCCQ members and others. Whether it is because of our efforts or not, Queenslanders ‘punch above their weight’ in both membership numbers and attendances at Musters. However, we do find a recurring objection from a number of potential or occasional Muster attendees. The objection is that the drive from Queensland to the Musters takes too long. Most do not object to the distance, but have difficulty organising time away from work or other commitments to attend the typical Muster.

The Griffith Muster illustrates this point. Griffith is about 550km from Sydney, 500 km from Melbourne, 350km from Canberra, 800 km from Adelaide and over 1,300 km from Brisbane. A lot of Queenslanders travel ‘in convoy’ to Musters and the trip to Griffith will probably take three days. This will be an enjoyable experience for retired members without time constraints. However, that time period will pose an insuperable barrier for many younger members who are still employed.

Recent Musters have been sited at Young (2009), Wellington (2011), Junee (2013) and Forbes (2015). An analysis of the previous fourteen Musters indicates that Queenslanders, on average, drive a greater distance than members from NSW, Victoria and Tasmania and a similar distance to those from South Australia. Obviously West Australians travel the greatest distance. The number of Queenslanders at Musters is usually second only to those from NSW.

It is instructive to analyse the age profile of 4CV Register members. With every passing year, there is an increase in the average age of members. It is obvious that the long term survival of the Register is dependent on our ability to attract new and younger members. Younger potential members are likely to be still employed. Their ability to attend Musters is related to the practicality of fitting the travel and attendance into the four day Easter break. The continuing concentration of Muster venues in southern NSW would have the effect of excluding younger Queenslanders from attendance at these events. A rotation of Muster sites between south and north western NSW would allow younger members and potential members from all eastern states to participate in at least a ‘trial’ Muster.

Brisbane is situated close to the border of NSW and we therefore tend to regard northern NSW as being ‘part of our backyard’. We certainly travel through the New England region on our way south to various events. Also, RCCQ has organised a number of Club long weekends at Kings Plains Castle near Inverell and a number of club members have friends and relatives living in the New England region. We have also considered the location of past Musters and the desirability of finding new locations.

In consideration of all the above factors, we have identified Inverell as an attractive venue for the 2019 Muster. The material below illustrates the suitability of Inverell for the 2019 Muster.

Inverell – Basic Information (ex Wikipedia)Inverell is a town in northern New South Wales, Australia, situated on the Macintyre River. It is also the centre of Inverell Shire. Inverell is located on the Gwydir Highway on the western slopes of the Northern Tablelands. It has a temperate climate. In the 2011 census, the population of Inverell was 9,347.[1]

History

In 1848, Alexander Campbell held the 50,000-acre (20,000 ha) Inverell Station on the Macintyre River. The name derives from the name of Mr. MacIntyre's estate. The word is of Gaelic origin, and signifies "meeting place of the swans"; from "Inver", a meeting place, and "Ell", a swan.[2] The MacIntyre River and Swanbrook Creek join here. The area was also known as "Green Swamp" in the 1850s. Wheat growers, Colin and Rosanna Ross established a store there in 1853,[3] when he asked that a town be surveyed. In 1858 this was done and in the following years the plan was approved and the first land sale was held. Byron Post Office (open since 1855) was replaced by the Inverell Post Office on 15 September 1859.[4] The municipality was proclaimed in March 1872.[5] The last section of the Inverell branchline, from Delungra to Inverell, was opened on 10 March 1902.[6] The last train ran to Inverell on 22 June 1987,[6] and the Delungra to Inverell section of the line was closed on 2 December 1987.[6] In 1871, the population of Inverell was 509, this increased to 1,212 in 1881.[7] After Federation, the population of Inverell was 1,230 in 1911, and grew to 6,530 (1947) and 8,209 (1961 census).[8][9][10]

Mining

Diamonds were discovered at Copes Creek in 1875 and were mined at Copeton from 1883-1922. Commercial sapphire mining was commenced in 1919 at Frazers Creek near Inverell. Rich alluvial deposits in streams were worked initially by hand miners but there was little recorded production up until approximately 1960.[11]

Industry

The Inverell district is in a fertile agricultural region which produces a wide range of crops, including wheat, barley, oats, sorghum, wine grapes and maize. There are also some mining activities with tin, sapphires, zircons and diamonds (mainly industrial) being found. Inverell is known as the ‘Sapphire City’ because of the sapphires that found throughout the local district, contributing to a major part of Australia's sapphire production.[12]

Copeton Dam, the region's main water supply, was completed in 1976.[13] While being smaller than Sydney Harbour, it can hold nearly 2 times the capacity of Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour).[13] The Inland Fishing Festival is held there every year.

Culture and tourism

The Grafton to Inverell Cycle Classic is an annual one day cycling event.[14] Beginning in Grafton, passing through Glen Innes and finishing in Inverell, the Classic is a 230 km ride over the demanding Gibraltar Range. The race starts at 23 metres above sea level and climbs to 1260 metres, before finishing in Inverell at 630 metres. The race is six to seven hours long, depending on weather conditions.[15]

Education

There are two primary schools in Inverell; Ross Hill School and Inverell Public School. The two local high schools are Inverell High School and Macintyre High School. Holy Trinity School is a Roman Catholic School in Inverell which caters for students from Kindergarten to Year Ten.

Transport

Inverell is served by Inverell Airport.

Inverell also lies on the Gwydir Highway, one of the primary east-west routes through New South Wales. Thunderbolts Way terminates at Copes Creek, 16 km south of the Gwydir Highway intersection at Inverell.[16][17]

Bus services in Inverell are provided by Inverell Bus Service, which operates two town loops, to the east and west.

Interurban bus service is provided by Symes Coaches to Glen Innes.

NSW Trainlink operates three Coach services in and out of Inverell: between Moree and Grafton, between Inverell and Tamworth via Manilla, and between Inverell and Armidale via Tingha

Inverell – Attractions

Attractions in Inverell include:

National Transport Museum – Phil Harrison visited this museum with Ghislain and Josiane Houpy during their visit to Australia in 2014 to attend the SE Queensland based Renault Muster Down Under. This superior regional museum contains a fascinating collection of cars and motoring items.Inverell Art Gallery – Our international visitors enjoyed their visit to this interesting regional art gallery.Inverell Pioneer VillageFerrett’s Run WineryThe Gem CentreBillabong Blue Sapphire ShopBillabong Blue Fossicking CentreWing Hing Long emporium – This is an operating shop, firmly caught in ‘time-warp’. It is situated in the nearby historic town of Tingha. This is another attraction enjoyed by our French visitors. Copeton Waters Sate Park – This park includes the Copeton Dam, which would be a suitable venue for a demonstration of ‘the Jet’!Kwiambal National ParkVicta Motor Mower MuseumKings Plains Castle – Situated about midway between Inverell and Glen Innes stands the unlikely visage of a Scottish Castle, constructed by a wealthy grazier over a century ago. RCCQ members have based themselves there for very enjoyable long weekends on a number of occasions. The Kings Plains Nation Park is situated nearby.New England Wood TurningInteresting ‘drivers’ roads’ on the Gywdir Highway east of Glen Innes.

Appendix A contains the list of attractions provided by the Inverell Visitor Information Centre.

Inverell – Accommodation

The city of Inverell has 7 motels, one hotel/motel and two hotels offering accommodation. A total in excess of 200 rooms are available. There are also 8 apartments/cottages in town plus a ‘B & B’.

Additionally, there are 3 caravan parks with a total of 60 sites plus 34 cabins.

The shire of Inverell contains a further 3 caravan parks plus 17 camping grounds.

Contact has been made with Ann Clydesdale, Senior Tourism Officer for Inverell. Ann Clydesdale advises that there are no major events currently scheduled in Inverell for Easter 2019. She does however advise early booking of accommodation because Inverell normally experiences an influx of visitors for tourism and family re-unions over Easter. Once we are able to confirm Inverell as the venue for the 2019 Muster, Ann Clydesdale would place the Muster on her events calendar. This should have the effect of discouraging un-necessary competition for facilities in Inverell during Easter 2019.

Appendix B provides further details of accommodation.

Organisation & Promotion

Both Bob Gray and Phil Harrison are on the committee of the RCCQ and have raised this matter at committee level. Bob Gray and Phil Harrison would be the primary organisers in the event that Inverell was selected as the venue for the 2019 Muster. In addition, RCCQ would provide such support as may be required to make the event a success.

Some major events organised by RCCQ include:

RenaultSPORT & Alpine Expo in 2005. This event was run over two days and three nights and attracted about 100 people.RenaultSPORT & Alpine Expo in 2010. This 10 day event included a Track Day’, car display, day runs, visits to various attractions and a number of social events.Renault Muster Down Under in 2014. This 16 day event was organised, in part, to reciprocate hospitality to the French hosts of the Australian contingent to the ‘Caraboucles’ event in France in 2012. The event included many driving and social events plus visits to tourist attractions.RCCQ assisted Rob and Rhonda Ringe in hosting of the party of 10 people from the Floride Caravelle Club de France during their 2011 visit to Australia. The 16 day event included participation in the 2011 Muster in Wellington.

There is the possibility of support for a 2019 Inverell Muster from the local council and businesses.

Ann Clydesdale of the Inverell Visitor Information Centre would also assist us with the organisation and promotion of an Inverell Muster.
