From 3D-printed motorcycle to designer table: Meet the EUROPEAN ALUMINIUM AWARD 2016 nominees

Lightweight, powerful and aesthetically pleasing – engineers, designers and architects consider aluminium the material that helps them create innovations and emphasise the features they care about. Want proof? Look no further than the EUROPEAN ALUMINIUM AWARD, the aluminium industry’s biennial award honouring the most creative and unusual new developments. Out of 52 innovative products from 18 countries submitted this year, 19 were nominated. The award will be presented on 29 November at ALUMINIUM 2016, the world’s largest industry trade fair taking place in Düsseldorf.
Nominated products range from a body for an electric vehicle to a 3D-printed motorcycle, and from a wind-protection wall for offshore oil rigs to a high-tech building façade designed by star architect Zaha Hadid. What they all have in common is that they integrate aluminium in a new and innovative way.
The award is presented in these categories: Automotive, Architecture & Construction, Design & Lifestyle, Production Techniques, Tools & Machinery and Transportation. The additional Young Talents Award recognises young designers and engineers.
Throughout the trade fair, ALUMINIUM visitors will be able to examine the nominated products at the Award Pavilion in Hall 10. An independent jury of international experts from Germany, the UK, Italy, the Netherlands and Denmark headed by Prof. Laurens Katgerman (Delft Technical University) and Vito Oražem (Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen) will select the best entries. The winner of the Design & Lifestyle award will be chosen through online voting by the visitors of the ALUMINIUM trade fair.
The award ceremony, which will take place at the ALUMINIUM Forum in Hall 11, is scheduled to start at 4 pm on 29 November.

The nominees
“Architecture & Constructions” category – 6 nominations
BARCO ONE CAMPUS – Atrium Walls (AVC, Belgium)
Curved interior facades in aluminium and Plexiglas: AVC Doors & Walls developed, engineered, produced and installed the interior facades on the different ellipsoid floors. The floors are also twisted in order to create terraces in the atrium. These minimalistic walls are created out of aluminium frames.
Aluminium Windwall (Bayards Aluminium Constructions, Netherlands)
When working at sea, the crew can be hindered in their work by the harsh weather. Statoil, Norway’s state energy company, also experienced similar hinder caused by the offshore weather conditions. So to decrease the downtime and to increase the safety for the crew, Bayards developed a solution in aluminium. By using aluminium for this so-called Windwall, durability is guaranteed.
Residence Blanco Oostduinkerke (BURO II & ARCHI+I, Belgium)
The design of these two multi-storey properties respects the scale of the adjacent residential centre. A uniform design was adopted for the façade and the roof to achieve a striking and distinctive architectural style. The preferred choice was white aluminium, as a contemporary application and interpretation of the white coastal architecture. The shell was constructed using a white aluminium standing seam system.
Port House Antwerp (GrovenPlus, Belgium)
The NIEUW HAVENHUIS in Antwerp serves as the headquarters for the port authority. The office is located at Zaha Hadidplein 1, an address named after Dame Zaha Hadid, the star architect who passed away unexpectedly right before the completion of the building. Made from aluminium and glass, the wave-like curving construction references the building’s unusual location on the water while simultaneously reflecting Antwerp’s role as the city of diamonds.
L'Orangerie (Seraing, Belgium / Novelis, Switzerland)
6,500 m² of Novelis J57S® in anodizing quality used as façade construction for the L’Orangerie project, the corporate headquarters of the Belgian mechanical engineering group, Cockerill Maintenance & Ingénierie in Seraing, Belgium. Now Novelis introduces the enhanced version. With J57S UP® Novelis developed the improved new anodizing quality for innovative and demanding architectural designs. Particularly noticeable is the three-dimensional cladding.

Façade P+R Garage Trainstation Elst, NL (Van Campen Industries, Netherlands)
The prefabricated aluminium components for the façade of the Garage Trainstation Elst consist of twisted aluminium blades. The resulting visual effect creates dynamism and depth in the façade, which transforms the building into a moving silhouette. Situated adjacent to a train line, the garage is perfectly in tune with the dynamism of the railway.
“Automotive” category – 3 nominations
Surfalex (Constellium, France)
This new product for visible deep drawn outers has been tested successfully by one German OEM. The benefits have been asset by two customers. Surfalex® HF gives clear formability improvement both in simulation, in prototype stamping trials and at the production site of the OEM.
All-Al light eBody (Hydro Rolled Products, Germany)
Hydro Aluminium Rolled Products presents a development of an innovative all-aluminium lightweight body-in-white (BIW) for an electric vehicle in mass production.
REALCAR (Jaguar| Land Rover & NOVELIS, UK / Switzerland)
Recycling is an essential part of making aluminium a permanently available material. Novelis developed the new automotive aluminium alloy RC5754 that is designed to absorb higher levels of processed automotive aluminium scrap than ever before.
“Design & Lifestyle” category – 3 nominations
Solar Fingerplate (Austria Druckguss, Austria)
The casting is needed for ground-mounted photovoltaic installations, which are subject to intense wind loads. This application demonstrates the potential of die casting as a source for the structural components required for alternative-energy generation.
ATTACH table-system (Grumdesign & Lammhults, Denmark / Sweden)
With only two basic-elements, an extruded beam and a casted leg, ATTACH offers an extraordinary flexibility, regarding table-shapes and -sizes. It is easy for the manufacturer to customize the table for special rooms etc.

ALUMASTER High Speed Disc (August Rüggeberg, Germany)
The ALUMASTER® High Speed Disc is a unique tool with an extremely high stock removal performance, which was specially developed for use on angle grinders. It is ideal for processing aluminium as it does not generate hazardous or explosive dust. The special design of the tool also guarantees maximum safety.
Carbon-reinforced Aluminium Spindle (HP & Engineering Community, Spain)
HP & Engineering Community have developed a large span heavy-duty spindle for large format printers which combines the qualities of aluminium and Carbon-reinforced plastics.
NANOmel® Technology (SiOx, Denmark)
The coating is based on a simple process: A substrate like aluminum is being cleaned and activated – and silicon oxide is applied and bonded to the metal. The result is a strong and sturdy corrosion resistant silica layer which enables new application areas for aluminum. The fused quartz coating provides an excellent anti-corrosive protection.
“Transportation” category – 2 nominations
One Pallet Stacking System (SpaceInvader, Denmark)
Optimizing use of space in the whole logistics and transport and warehousing: The stacking system consists of two very light frames made of aluminum (9.3 kg a piece). These devices can be applied to pallets for stacking in double layer.
High Pressure Die Casting Aluminum Suspension Cross Beam (Streparava, Italy)
Aim of this research is to develop a technically reliable and cost effective safety component for Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) in aluminum alloy, in particular a front suspension cross beam for a LCV with a Gross Vehicle Weight of 5.0 tons. Target of the project is to demonstrate the feasibility of “light” materials even in “heavy” applications.

“Young Talents” category – 2 nominations
Light Rider 3D-printed motorcycle (Niels Grafen TU München / Airbus APWorks, Germany)
World's first 3D printed motorcycle: The designer Niels Grafen is the first to bring a whole vehicle to the streets that relies solely on 3D printing for its structural components. The design approach he was using, mainly the topology optimization, combined with 3D printing enabled us to create an urban mobility.
