The First 4000 WordsSpelling Words & Daily Words~Ms. Butsuda

The First 4000 Words is a list of the most frequently used English words in grades 1 – 4. This research-based word list helps students develop good reading and writing skills. Since these words are so common, children can be even more successful in school if they can spell these words correctly all the time in their everyday writing versus just on tests.

Must Know Words"Must Know” words are so common, they are not included in the First 4000 Word list! These “Must Know” words should always be spelled correctly in everyday writing by the end of the year.

The second week of school your child took a test on these “Must Know” words. If there is a line through the number next to the word it means your child misspelled it on the test.

PracticeIf you have time during the week, I encourage you to practice these words with your child. His/her paper will have an increased "look of literacy" if these words are correctly spelled in everyday writing.
