For this project, we had to create products to help promote a band’s debut album. My group included Rhiann Johal, Jessica Yiangou & Jagoda Jasionowska. We all had our own product to do;

Rhiann – She made a magazine cover & an inside interview with photos. Jess – She made the CD Cover – front and back. Jagoda – She made an advert for the magazine. Me – I made a website for the band with 6 different pages – home page, info page, videos

page, gallery, candy coated collection page, contact page.

However, before we could make our products, we had to do some research to work out how we could make them as well as possible.

Questionnaire:

The first thing we had to go for this project was to make a questionnaire so that we could find out what would be the best idea to use out of the ones we had so far. These were the questions that we included in the questionnaire;

We got people to fill out 20 questionnaires, with each of us taking 5 each and then uploaded them onto the blog. We then made a questionnaire answer document which would make it easier to make our graphs later on. This is the answer document;

We then used this information to make our own graphs and we wrote about what our we thought our demographic would be;

From looking at the results, we learned that the following would be the best to use:

The band should be called Candy Coated Our ideal target audience would be females at the age of 11-21 Our band should make Pop music We should have 4 girls in our band

We put question 5 in so that we would know who we should do our marketing research on and we all decided that I would do One Direction, with Rhiann doing Nicola Roberts, Jess doing The Saturdays and Jagoda doing Little Mix.

Marketing Research:

For the marketing research we each had to analyse a CD Cover, a Magazine Cover & Article, a Website and an Advert. We did all these four because these are the products that we are creating to promote our band, Candy Coated. Here are the One Direction website analysis’s that I did:

We did these analyses so that we would know what we would need on our own products & what would be good and bad to add. After everyone had completed their set of analyses, we all sat down and looked at what each analysis had in common. For instance, the website always had a home page & a gallery page, the magazine interviews were written with the same structure. We also learned what all the codes and conventions of all the products too.

Other Research:

After completing all the analyses of other examples of the products, we all decided to make some

mood sheets to help us stay within the themes that we had chosen for the band and the photo shoot. I made 11 mood sheets in total, from different colours to a candy page. Here they are below:

These mood sheets help all four of us keep a consistence through all of our products. Even though we all made different products, we knew that we had to have some sort of elements that were the same, so people would connect all the products back to the band.

Photo Shoots:

We needed to do a photo shoot because we all needed photos for our projects. I needed the most images because I needed pictures for every single page and I also needed film everyone in some videos for my videos page on the candy coated website.

We did 3 different shoots:

Photoshoot 1: We got lots of pictures for the gallery page, got the image for the contact page.

Photoshoot 2: We did a tea party themed part, where we got all the pictures needed for Rhiann’s Magazine, all the pictures for my candy brand page and we shot the Jess’ CD Cover too. We also took the picture for my info page.

Photoshoot 3: We got some extra gallery pictures & took the picture for Jagoda’s advert.

I also filmed the 5 videos for the video page on my website. The filming was quite easy as we just put the camera on a tripod. However, for the behind the scenes videos, I decided that we needed to make it look amateurish because I wanted it to seem like we (the band) had just picked up one of the camera’s off the set and were messing about. Whereas on the Charity &

Hot Fire Questions, we had the camera on a tripod and we had a script for both videos that I wrote.

The editing was ok, as I had made sure to say cut and action when we was filming so it was only really putting the right clips together and making sure there was no errors in it. I made the videos on Windows Movie Maker.

I then uploaded all the videos on the youtube page that I made for the band, (http://www.youtube.com/user/CandyCoatedVEVO) because I couldn’t upload them onto the wix website without them on some sort of video sharing website.

Home Page:

For the home page, I decided that I wanted to put a picture of the entire band, because it’s a convention of a website plus it would grab the viewer’s attention. I then decided to put the CD Cover because that is the product we are trying to promote. The video is there because it adds some interaction.

Info Page:

For the info page, I decided to make sort of top trump cards, because I thought if I wrote information in a list about us all, then people might not read it, or could get bored of it. I used the middle image because it fits with the image we wanted for the band, compared to the image I used in my first draft.

Videos Page:

For the videos page, I decided to put all the videos, with little captions to give the viewer an idea of what is in the video. However, I didn’t felt like it needed a description in it because they could see that if they go to the youtube page.

Gallery Page:

For the gallery page, I made two sections for the pictures, one for pictures of us & one for fan pictures. The top half has behind the scene pictures of us from photoshoots and from sets. The bottom half has fan pictures and a submit section where fans are able to submit any

pictures which would be checked before uploaded if appropriate.

Candy Brand Page: For the candy brand page, I decided to show off the products that we had and their names so that the viewers of the web page might remember the names. I also added pictures of us at the bottom so people would keep associating us with the Candy Coated Collection.

Contact Page:

For the contact page, I decided to put all the links to any social networking sites we are on and our email & youtube. I added the magazine because it is something that we are involved in and that we want to get as many sales as possible.

The last thing I did for this project was make a word bubble on www.wordle.net.

The skills I learned on this project were how to make a website on www.wix.com. Another skill that I gained was editing my videos on Windows Movie Maker as I have never done this before. I also learned the codes & conventions of all the products we made. The photoshoots taught us what you have to think of when shooting someone, e.g lighting, positions & camera effects.

If I had to do this project again, I would make sure we had planned exactly what we needed from the photoshoots so that we didn’t have to do 3 different ones & could get them all done in 1.
