Third Sunday of Easter April 15, 2018 You alone, O LORD, bring security to my dwelling. — Psalm 4:9 BELIEVING IN JESUS CHRIST Throughout the Easter season, all three of the Sunday readings are taken from the New Testament—the Christian scriptures. Together they explore what it means to believe in Jesus as the Christ, the One who fulfilled the prophecies of the Jewish scriptures. Today’s selections refer to our human weakness, yet they emphasize the forgiveness and peace that are available to those who put their faith in “Jesus Christ the righteous one” (1 John 2:2). In the Acts of the Apostles Peter invites everyone to “repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away” (Acts 3:19). The First Letter of John calls Jesus Christ “expiation for our sins” (1 John 2:2). Finally, in the Gospel Jesus greets the disciples with “Peace” and urges them to preach “repentance, for the forgiveness of sins” (Luke 24:47). Question of the Week How can I be a witness? Pastor’s Note April 15, 2018

Third Sunday of Easter

Today’s Gospel is about the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. The event of Emmaus was a life changing moment not only to the disciples but to the whole Chrisitan world. It gives us a great insight into the faith of the early Chrisitan community regarding the resurrection of Christ. No one was physically present to witness the very moment of the resurrection but no one questioned this event among early Christians. Christians had solid faith in the resuurection not only because the Apostles were telling them about an empty tomb and the many apprearances that followed but because the power of signs, most especially the sacramental sign of the Eucharist, to communicate the reality of the resurrection. It is at Emmaus that we see the Eucharist---the “breaking of the bread” as it was called in the early Church---become the sign, par excellence, to communicate the resurrection. It was only through the “breaking of the bread” (in the celebrating of the Eucharist) that their eyes were opened to faith and they recognized Jesus’ presence. As it was for these early disciples in the Christain community, it is for us today. The celebration of Mass gives us the opportunity to walk alongside Jesus and have him instruct us, that our hearts may burn within us, during the proclamation and preaching of the Word of God. But not until we experience the Eucharist and allow it to affect what it signifies---the real and true crucified and resurrected presence of Jesus---that we are capable of seeing Jesus and , thus understanding all that he instructs us during the Liturgy of the Word. The Eucharist is the sign of God’s actual presence with us. It is a mystery. It is the sign that conveys the mysteries of our salvation and God’s love for us. It is also

the sign that mysteriously works within us, the faith that affects our senses, so that we see in the Eucharist a meaning and reality that goes beyond our prima facie perception. Therefore, we are elevated to the realm of the beautiful and transcendent glory of the Resurrected One. This encounter could absolutely change our lives and will change our resolve by giving the faith we heard proclaimed and preached---which burned in our hearts---credibility. Now we follow Christ with a deeper conviction because the Eucharist shows us his presence alongside us for the journey. This is just another gift to us this Easter. We cannot celebrate Easter in only one day but fifty days. God blesses us with his Eucharist presence every time the Mass is celebrated. What an awesome gift?

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

There are many ways in which religious communities are organized. Some have a central authority in a congregation, and others have a “rule” that is shared by all the members, but are a kind of federation of independent houses. Sometimes, congregations with distinct histories and ministries decide to merge. Several years ago, one of the largest mergers on record took place. Seven independent congregations of Dominican women religious, most in the Midwest, are now one new congregation enfolding more than seven hundred members spanning thirty-six states. The oldest of the founding groups, the so-called “Kentucky Dominicans,” began as a frontier community in 1822. Other communities have European roots. To get to this historic moment, the sisters spent many years in conversation, and approved the new structure by a two-thirds majority vote. This was then ratified by the Holy See. The merger allows the sisters to pool their resources in order to be more effective in ministry. They are living the Paschal Mystery, experiencing Christ’s dying and rising in an inspiring way.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul Angels CampWhat are we up to? We have given out a lot of furniture, given rides to doctor appointments, helped a few clients with some rent money, bought a birthday cake and ice cream for a 12-year-old and prayed with all we helped. We welcome any monetary donations to continue our desire to help the needy in our community. If you are interested helping with your time or money, please call St. Vincent de Paul at 736-9978 and leave a message or attend a meeting on the 3rd Monday of the month at the Helping Hands house at 6:00 pm.
