A native of Evanston, 111#, Father P elt on has sp ec ia lised in a s c e t ic a l
theology# He is a 1945 Motre Dane graduate and holds a doctorate in sacred theology
from The Angelico# in Rome. He taught a t Notre Dane during the 1949*50 school year
and has been a member of the facu lty continuously since 1953#
For several years Father Pelton has been a member of the planning committee
for the I n s t itu te of S p ir itu a lity held annually a t Notre Dane in August He i s
author of A Thomistie Conception of the S p ir itu a lity of the Catholic U niversity Lay

of Notre Dame on June 26, 1909, are Rev. Eugene P. Burke, C .S .C ., 75, who r e t i r e d
from th e U niversity facu lty a t the close o f the school year; Rev. Cornelius J .
Hagerty, C.S.C., 73, chaplain to the Brothers of Holy Cross a t D ujarie H all here;
and Rev. Thomas P . Irv ing , C .S .C ., 78, re s id en t confessor a t Corby H all, the p r ie s t s 1
residence on the campus.

F ather Bur’® , a native of Chicago, was graduated from Notre Dame in 1906
a f te r he had helped e d it the f i r s t issue of the DOME, the U n iv e rs ity 's yearbook.
Following h is o rd in a tio n , he taught a t Koly Cross College, Washington, D. C ,, and
studied fo r h is doctorate which he received from th e Catholic U niversity of America
th e re . Father Burke f i r s t joined the Notre Dame fa c u lty in 191U fo r a five year
period and has been teaching English and re lig io n a t the U niversity continuously
since 193lu He i s a former p residen t o f the U niversity of Portland (O re.), and he
served as e d ito r of THE ARE MARIA, published a t Notre Dam, fo r f iv e years beginning
in 1928, F ather Burke composed the ly r ic s for one of Notre Dame's s p ir i te d fo o tb a ll
songs, "When the I r i s h Backs Go Marching By," Upon h is retirem ent from the fa c u lty
recen tly , he was appointed chaplain a t the S tu d en t's Infirm ary on the campus.
Born in South Bend, In d ., Father Eagerty also is a 1906 Notre Dame graduate.
A fter receiv ing a doctorate from the C atholic U n iversity of America in 1911, he
taugh t philosophy a t Notre Dame fo r ten years. He was a fa c u lty member a t th e
U niversity of Portland from 1921 to 192h and a t S t , Edward's U niversity , A ustin,
Tex. from 1926 to 1935. During the next eighteen years he taught courses in apolo-
g e tic s and dogma in Hot re Dame *s re lig io n department# He i s the author of a college
te x t in apologetics# Since 1953 Father Hagerty has been chaplain a t Bujarie H all,

Father Irv ing is a native of Glyman, Wisconsin# Graduated from Notre

The book, published by Ginn and Company, i s the f i r s t of a two-volur::e
sequence to be known as A Course in Mathematical A nalysis. I t presents elementary
analysis both as mathematics and as aft instrum ent of sc ien ce .
The authors are Dr. Norman B. Haaser, associa te p ro fessor of mathematics5
Dr. Joseph A. S u llivan , assoc ia te p ro fesso r of mathematicsj and Dr. Joseph P.
L aSalle, former professor of mathematics a t Notre Dame and now a member of the
Research In s t i tu te fo r Advanced Study, Baltimore, Md.
According to the au thors, th e next te x t i s designed to provide students
with a firm foundation in analysis and thereby enable them to continue th e i r mathe
m atical education in various of the sp ec ia lized or basic f ie ld s of mathematics. I t
w ill also give them the mathematical tra in in g th a t i s a p re re q u is ite fo r th e i r basic
science and engineering courses.
Haaser taught a t Notre Dame during 19U6-U7 and has been a fa c u lty member
continuously since 1950. He i s a consu ltan t to th e Advanced Development L aborato ries,
Bendix Productions D ivision, Bendix A viation Corp. He holds an undergraduate and
m aster’s degree from Hotre Dame and a doctorate from Brown U niversity .

Notre Dame, Ind., June 25 — The appointment of Dr. Harry 0. Saxe as head of the University of Notre Dame's department of civil engineering was announced today by Rev, Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., University president.
Saxe, who has been teaching at the University of Cincinnati since 1957, succeeds Prof, Walter Shilts, head of the department since 1938. Shilts will continue teaching civil engineering courses and will assume other responsibilities,
A specialist in structural theory and design and structural research techniques, Saxe formerly taught at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, the Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Florida. His professional affiliations include the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Society for Experimental Stress Analysis, Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi and Chi Epsilon.
Saxe was born in Long Island City, N, Y., and took his undergraduate work in civil engineering at the City College of New York, He holds a master's degree from the University of Florida and a Doctor of Science degree from the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology.The 39-year-old engineer has served as a consultant and structural
engineer for several construction projects in the southeastern states. He was an aviation engineering officer and airport engineer with the U, S. Army diring World War II. He has contributed a number of articles to professional and industrial journals.

wife have teamed up to take co lor a e r ia l photographs of p a rt of S t . Joseph County
and the southwest MicMgan dunes area in a two-year research p ro je c t supported by the
U. S. Navy,
Dr. Erhard M. W inkler, assoc ia te p ro fesso r of geology, has been awarded a
,$6,500 grant by the O ffice of Naval Research to conduct th e study e n t i t le d " In te r
p re ta tio n of G lacial Deposits from Color A ir Photos." The Vienna-born s c ie n t is t is
photographing the area with sp e c ia l camouflage detec tion film provided by the Navy.
Mrs. Winkler, who has a commercial p i l o t 's c e r t i f i c a te , i s doing the precision f ly in g .
While v i r tu a l ly a l l of S t . Joseph County has been photographed in b lack
and w h ite , i t i s believed th a t Winkler’s film s M i l be the f i r s t extensive co lo r
photographs of the area. According to the Notre Dame g eo lo g is t, the special f ilm
w ill capture shades and hues of s o i l which would not show in standard ae ria l co lo r
photos. The co lo r v a ria tio n s , he explained, w ill in d ic a te d if fe re n t types of s o i ls
as well as th e p o ss ib le presence of underground w ater.
According to Winkler, th e g la c ia l deposits of tM s area are ty p ic a l of
th e northern g lac ia ted hemisphere includ ing northern Europe and northern Asia.
Consequently, i t may be possib le to generalize the re s u lts of Ms two-year study
to a ce rta in extent and apply them to other p a rts o f the w orld. Phenomenon
discovered in the a e r ia l photos, he sa id , w il l be confirmed l a t e r by d e ta ile d f i e ld
work,
Winkler jo ined the Notre Dame fa c u lty in 19i|B. He received a doctorate
from tho U niversity of Vienna in 19h$ and fo r th ree years was associa ted with the
In s t i tu te of Technology a t the Austrian c a p i ta l . He is a member of the Geological

Notre Dame, Ind., June 29 — Three recent graduates of the University of
Notre Dane have been awarded grants to study abroad during the 1959-60 school year.
James L. Merz, Teaneck, N. J« (908 Lincoln Place), and Frank Hayden,
Memphis, Tenn. (877 L. Neptune St.,), have received Fulbright scholarships. Joseph
T. Nicholas, Gorham, New Harpshire (380 Main St.) is the recipient of a U. S.
educational exchange award under the Smith-Mundt Act.
A total of 51 grants for graduate study and research have been awarded to
members of Notre Dame's 1959 senior class md to graduate students currently*
enrolled at the University. Notre Dame's 22 Woodrow Wilson Fellowship winners
constitute the fifth largest group at any college or university in the nation.
Merz, who received a bachelor's degree in physics earlier this month,
will study physics at George August University, Goettingen, Germany. Earlier he
was awarded fellowships by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation md the Dan forth Foundation .
Hayden plans to study at the Institute of Fine Arts in Munich, Germany.
He received a master of fine arts degree from Notre Dame at the June commencement.
Nicholas, also a member of this year's senior class, will take Latin
American studies at the University of El Salvador in that country.
