Supplementary information: our reasons for translating the DIT into Chinese
Our review of the DIT questionnaire, and our observations when the test was conducted on the
students, support the view that it would be better received and more clearly understood if it was provided with a Chinese translation. Our intent is to provide the translation as an additional option
only and the student will be free to select either language.
We also note that the DIT contains a self-checking mechanism and this is in the form of some
questions which are purposely ambiguous e.g. 'Is the epitome of eating reconcilable with the culpability of stealing?'. To ensure that this self-check is effective, the student is advised to answer in
the negative when he/she does not understand any question. We feel that it would be better to provide a Chinese translation for our students to ensure that this self-checking mechanism works as it
is designed.
