MrsBrown:My hobby is gardening and I like to

exchange ideas about gardening withanyone who is interested in plants andnature. Iwasonly16whenIembarkedonthishobbyandsincethenIhavetriedvariousdesignstyles.

IwantedtohaveastylishgardenandI put great effort in planting a formalgarden. Formal gardens essentiallyhave their feet in history, reachingbacktotheromanticdesignsofPersiandynasties, and the complicated gardensoftheElizabethans.Thisstyleofgardenemploysbothstraightandcurved lines, and planting is generally symmetrical.

Intensely costly and time-consuming, this type of planting has less appeal tomodernhouseholds.

SolaterIdecidedtocreateaCottagegardenwhichismuchmoreinstepwithmodernliving.Cottagersoriginallyusedtheirsmallplotsforgrowingvegetablesand fruit as well as flowering plants. Part of this style involved mixing foodcultivationwiththerestoftheplanting.AndIdidn’tlikeit.

That’s the reasonwhy I soonswitched toTraditionalgardenswhicharemuchmoreflexibleandatthesametimestylish.Traditionalgardenstaketheircuefromstatelyhomes,andaregenerallycentredonalawn.Theendresultisanamalgamofthelasthundredyearsorsoofgardendesign.Wellexecutedwithgoodbalanceandconsiderationforthesurroundings,thetraditionalstyleisoneofthemostchallenging,andthereforerewarding,waystodesignagarden.

WhenIlookatmygardennowIcanseethatovertheyearsithaspreservedelementsofeachofitspreviousdesignsandhasacquiredastyleofitsown.ButI like itbecause ithascombinedthevariousstylestogreateffect.Andit isajoytoseeburgeoningplantsbillowingfromtheconfinesofarigidlystructuredgarden.

Afterall,rulesaremadetobebroken!
