T.U. PHILOSOPHY We believe that trout and salmon fishing isn't just fishing for trout and salmon. It's fishing for sport rather than food, where the true enjoyment of the sport lies in the challenge, the lore, the bale of wits, not necessarily the full creel. It's the feeling of sasfacon that comes from liming your kill instead of killing your limit. It's communing with nature where the chief reward is a refreshed body and a contented soul, where a license is a permit to use not abuse, to enjoy not destroy our cold water fishery. It's subscribing to the proposion that what's good for trout and salmon is good for the fisherman and that managing trout and salmon for themselves rather than the fisherman is fundamental to the soluon of our trout and salmon problems. It's appreciang our fishery resource, respecng fellow anglers and giving serious thought to tomorrow. The May Virtual Chapter Meeng will take place May 19 at 7:30 pm using Zoom. Board Meeting - June 3 June LITU Trip to the Beaverkill - June 12-14 CANCELLED Chapter Meeting - June 16

Tips for May

When in Doubt – When in doubt, put a stimulator out – ANY attractor pattern for that matter. Whether you use a Royal Wulff or a Trude, a good basic fly with a great profile can cover a lot of water and find any interested trout below. (Brian Kozminski) Don't Mix ''New" Tying Materials with Old - If you obtain new materials, don't immediately put them in with your existing supply. Materials obtained from road kills, from hunters, or even from reputable sup-pliers can be infested with insect eggs or larva, which can not only destroy the new material but can spread to your existing supplies as well. As a precaution, you could freeze the new item in a freezer or even out-side if the temperature is near zero. You might also, if feasible, wash the new item thoroughly if it is dirty or you suspect a problem. In any event, keep the new material in a clear zip-lock bag and examine it closely before incorporating it with your supplies. If in doubt, it is best to return it to the place you purchased it or discard it if procured by other means. (Jim Weaver) Speed Up Your Tying - Mark your left or right thumb-nail with a pencil mark or marks to show the wing length when tying flies. It will make it easier to keep the wings in proportion and of equal length. Another way to speed up your tying is to end your bobbin at the point it will next be needed. This way you won't have to waste time moving it to line up for the next step. (Jim Weaver) Fish Closer Water First - When entering a section of water, it is tempting to begin casting to the rises on the far bank or to begin casting to the most ideal holding water. To do so may cause you to scare fish by carelessly wading to get into casting position or to spook fish that your line may cross. It is better to take a few moments to observe the area for working fish or holding lies on your side of the river. You can then

formulate a plan as to how you will approach each fish or spot without scaring the nearby fish. Once the closer water is fished, you can extend your casts or move further out into the stream. On crowded streams where you don't have the luxury of simply moving to another nearby spot, you must make the most of each area you fish. (Jim Weaver) Delay Setting Hook When Fishing Downstream - One difficulty of fishing downstream to rising fish is the tendency to set the hook too soon after a strike. It is best to wait a second or two for the trout to turn downward before tightening, but our instinct is to set the hook immediately upon seeing the rise. Pull-ing the fly out of the fish's open mouth misses a lot of fish. A slower set will hook many more fish and hook them more securely. (Jim Weaver) Send your tips to [email protected]

Climate Change Advocacy

Trout Unlimited, and the NYS

Council, support a bill that is

now before Congress, the

"Energy Innovation and Car-

bon Dividend Act.“ Just as we

learned in the 1990s that we

had to move from the stream

to the watershed scale to re-

cover trout and salmon, we

must reduce carbon emissions

to slow climate change. For this reason, Trout Unlimited is supporting passage of common-sense legislation

such as the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act. The time for band-aids is past. Nothing less than

the future of trout and salmon; the future of fishing—the future for our children is at stake.”

In short, this bill spurs innovation while lowering carbon emissions. Written by three Democrats and two

Republican representatives in Dec. 2018, it has bipartisan appeal: using the power of the market to robustly

lower carbon emissions (without regulation and without growing government), while boosting the econo-

my. It has diverse support in NYS, endorsed by 19 Upstate NY municipalities across the political spectrum,

14 wineries, and the NYS Brewers Association, among others.

We’re writing to ask you to consider endorsing this bill as well — as a TU chapter if possible, or as chapter

president (individually). To write a personal letter to your representative click here.

The current changes to Carbon Monoxide and Dioxide gas levels demonstrate that we can have a positive

effect on climate change. Citing data from Columbia University, the BBC noted how New York's carbon mon-

oxide emissions dropped around 50% and carbon dioxide by 5-10%, as well as significant drop in methane.

Carbon dioxide and methane are primary greenhouse gases, which contribute to the increased warming of

the planet.

However, the positive trends in NO2, carbon monoxide, dioxide or methane levels could be reversed when

global commerce, travel and transportation behaviors resume to their pre-pandemic levels.

You can also learn here about the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act and how it works.

Covid-19 (Coronavirus) and Fishing Can I go fishing while social distancing? BY ON THE WATER STAFF APRIL 2, 2020

Can you go fishing during the current Covid-19 (coronavirus) pandemic? Yes, with some exceptions depending on which state you fish in.

Most states are encouraging fishermen to spend time on the water, as long as they are being safe and following local regulations and guidelines. After all, what better way to practice ‘social distancing’ while maintaining your mental health than by getting outside and enjoying some fishing?

New Jersey DFW published this poster encourag-ing safe practices while fishing during the COVID-19 crisis. Here are some basic guidelines for safe fishing during the COVID-19 Crisis:

• Stay home if you are sick, or showing or feel-ing any COVID-19 symptoms, such as fever, coughing, and/or troubled breathing

• Practice social distancing by keeping at least six (6) feet of distance between yourself and others. A good way to measure this is with your fishing pole! Hold the pole straight out in front you. If you can turn in a circle without hitting anyone, that is a safe distance.

• Avoid contact, such as shaking hands, hug-ging, or high-fives

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

• Wash hands often or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol when soap and water are not available

• Avoid unnecessary contact with surfaces that are often touched, such as doorknobs and handrails.

• Drive to your fishing spots only with your immediate family members and only if everyone is feeling well. Don’t share fishing gear with others. Each angler should have their own fishing gear (rod and reels, bait, lures, towels, pliers, and other per-sonal items).

We’ve gathered the latest information from state agencies in the Northeast. Rules and recommendations are changing daily, but we’ll do our best to keep the information below up to date. New York As of March 28, 2020, the NY DEC and State Parks are encouraging responsible recreation during the COVID-19 cri-sis. In addition, they launched a new hashtag – #RecreateLocal – and encouraged New Yorkers to get outside and discover open spaces and parks close to home. DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos said, “New York State is home to some of the most spectacular public lands and parks in the world. In uncertain times, these special places can serve as an oasis from stress, fear, and anxiety.”
