About Cluj Napoca
You are lucky because you just came in the friendliest
city in Europe! According to a survey about
perception regarding the presence of foreigners and
whether it is good for the city made in 2012, 91% of
people in Cluj-Napoca said that foreigners are good
for the city.
Located in the center of the historical region called
Transylvania, in the northwestern part of the country, Cluj-Napoca
is one of the most visited cities in Romania. With a population of
over 300.000 inhabitants in the metropolitan area, Cluj represents
an important academic, industrial, cultural, technical and
business center.
The city dates since the Roman times (when it was named
Napoca). Throughout the compact city center the visitor can see
the remains of the old medieval city walls, ancient houses and
churces, and palaces dating from the times of the Hungarian and
4
Austrian empires, as Cluj (named Kolozsvar in Hungarian and
Klausenburg in German) was the center of the administration for
the province of Transylvania.
Cluj-Napoca is the biggest center of IT industry in Romania
(besides the capital Bucharest), the biggest software export hub in
Romania, the location of the first and most important IT Cluster
in Romania ( www.clujit.ro ) and has the highest concentration of
software proffesionals in the entire country ( around 9.000 people).
Recent initiatives in developing business incubators aim to place
Cluj-Napoca as a center of innovation and start-up culture.
Cluj-Napoca has the highest concentration of TYPO3 developers in
the entire country, and probably in the entire East Europe. All the
national meetups (in the last 3 years) of the Romanian Usergroup
happened in Cluj-Napoca.
Because of top level universities located in Cluj-Napoca, the city
boosts a student population of around 100.000, creating a very
lively atmosphere and supporting a lot of cultural events
throughout the year, but also a plethora of pubs, clubs and nice
restaurants.
For those who are interested in urban Transylvanian life, Cluj-
Napoca is a very pleasant travel experience, a city with a
wonderful historical legacy and a great European spot for
meetings with inspiring people.
Recently awarded with the title of The European Youth Capital
2015 after a strong competition with other 12 distinguished cities
that applied from across the continent, Cluj-Napoca is also a
candidate city for The European Capital of Culture in 2021.
