From the costumes worn in the academic procession one can tell the level of degree (associate's, bachelor's, master's, doctor's) the wearer has earned, the field of learning, and the institution that granted the degree. The costume consists of cap, gown and hood.

The usual cap is a square black mortarboard with a black tassel; the doctor's cap has a gold tassel. The gown is also normally black. Associate's, bachelor's and master's gowns are relatively plain and closed in front; the doctor's gown is cut fuller, is open in front, and has velvet panels down the front and has three velvet bars on the sleeves. The panels and bars are usually black.

The hood, patterned after the medieval monk's hood, goes over the shoulders and hangs down in back. The hoods for the three degrees vary in length from the bachelor's the shortest, to the doctor's the longest. The velvet border shows by its color the field of learning; the most common are: white - arts, letters, humanities (usually seen in honorary doctor's degrees); dark blue - philosophy (the most common in doctor's hoods); purple - law; scarlet - theology; green - medicine; golden yellow - science. The same colors may be used in the panels and bars of the gown. The most distinctive part of the costume is the silk lining of the hood which bears the official colors of the institution granting the degree.

William R. Hoeb, Jr. Manager, Media Services Cincinnati Milacron, Inc.

William R. Hoeb, Jr. joined Cincinnati Milacron in June 1962 as a cooperative education student while studying at the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture and Art. After graduating in 1964, he became a full-time employee of Cincinnati Milacron's art and production department. Mr. Hoeb's career at Milacron has included positions as advertising production manager, manager of graphic services, manager of advertising services, and manager of educational relations and media development.

Mr. Hoeb is the immediate past chairman of the Cincinnati State Board of Trustees. He served on the board from 1989 until 1995. He is currently a member of the Cincinnati State Foundation Board and served as its chairman from 1992 until 1994.

Mr. Hoeb has been an advocate of cooperative education and has served as an elected officer in the national, regional and state co-op associa­tions. In 1987, he was the recipient of the national Cooperative Education Association's Charles F. Kettering Award, which is presented annually to an individual in business, industry or government for outstanding contributions to the advancement of the philosophy and practice of cooperative education. He was elected Employer of the Year by the Ohio Cooperative Education Association in 1982-83 and again in 1983-84.

Mr. Hoeb has accepted volunteer leadership roles with the United Way campaigns, Junior Achievement of Greater Cincinnati, the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Cincinnati Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Greater Cincinnati Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Cincinnati, and the Dan Beard Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Lynwood L. Battle Manager of Diversity

The Procter & Gamble Company

Lynwood L. Battle is a twenty-five year employee of The Procter & Gamble Company and is the company's Manager of Diversity. He is responsible for coordinating Procter & Gamble's affirmative action and equal opportunities policies. In 1994, these programs were recognized with the Secretary of Labor's Opportunity 2000 Award, which is presented to only one company annually.

In 1991, Mr. Battle was elected to the Cincinnati Board of Education. He served as the board's president in 1993, and was re-elected to the Board of Education in 1995.

Mr. Battle is active in the community, serving on the boards of the Cincinnati Children's Museum, the Cincinnati Museum Center for Natural and Cultural History and Science, the Dan Beard Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the National Council of Christians and Jews, Cincinnati Arts Festival and the Vocal Arts Ensemble. He is a member of the Cincinnatus Association and the Black Male Coalition.

His professional affiliations include the Equal Employment Advisory Council of Washington, DC., where he is a board member and former chairman, The President's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities, the National Association of Manufacturers, the National Alliance of Business and the Ohio State Advisory Committee of the US. Commission on Civil Rights.

In addition to his corporate position, Mr. Battle is a practicing morti­cian with his family's business, the J.C. Battle & Sons Funeral Home in Cincinnati, founded by the grandfather in 1933. Mr. Battle is a graduate of Walnut Hills High School and Ohio State University.

Roxanne Qualls Mayor

City of Cincinnati

Roxanne Qualls was re-elected Mayor of the City of Cincinnati in November 1995 after serving one term as Mayor and one term on City Council. She is the first popularly elected woman mayor of the city.

As mayor, she has emphasized regional cooperation and the devel­opment of regional structures to solve problems. She has focused attention on revitalizing Cincinnati as the center of the Tri-State region. Mayor Qualls instituted the weekly Mayor's Night In meetings and the quarterly Mayor's Night Out, neighborhood meetings in the community.

Prior to her election as Mayor, she served on City Council for two years. She chaired the Intergovernmental Affairs and Environment Committee where she focused on critical issues such as infrastructure, transportation and neighborhood development

Before entering political office, Mayor Qualls served as director of the Cincinnati office of Citizen Action, executive director of Women Helping Women, and director of the Northern Kentucky Rape Crisis Center. She also owned her own company, Re:Crafters.

Mayor Qualls received the 1996 National Association of Social Workers Public Official of the Year Award. In 1995, she received the Salvation Army Gold Crest Award. She was a 1994 YWCA Career Woman of Achievement Award winner. The Soroptomist Club honored the Mayor in 1993 with an Outstanding Achievement Award, and in 1992, the Girl Scouts presented her .a Woman of Distinction Award.
