From the Manager

From the Manager The winter forecast is calling for colder than usual, but we are looking forward to several Library Redevelopment Strategy building projects to brighten the next few months! St. Vital Library will undergo the second part of a renovation project to address accessibility and functional challenges in this unique heritage building – the first modernist facility in Winnipeg to receive this designation. The project will start in early 2017 and includes a new entrance, improved parking, and accessible collections. There will also be new furniture, skylights, a tutorial room, new flooring and painting, and an indoor Family Literacy playground.

Our two Carnegie libraries, Cornish and St. John’s, will also undergo major renovations in early 2017, thanks to the support of the Winnipeg Library Foundation. The architects have worked closely with Heritage Winnipeg to preserve the character of these buildings while improving accessibility and providing more useable space for staff and customers. The new Windsor Park Library started construction at its new location at 1201 Archibald Street in August, 2016. We anticipate opening this approximately 8,000 square foot facility in fall, 2017.

The last big project starting in 2017 is the construction of the new Transcona Library. The new one-floor, 13,500 square foot facility will be built at 1500 Plessis Road and includes fully accessible space with parking and an outdoor reading area. Construction is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2017, with an anticipated completion date of spring 2018. • Ed Cuddy, Manager of Library Services

Baby Talk As they grow, children discover the rhythm and flow of language, the meaning of words, and how to put words together to tell stories. Before they enter school, children learn to identify letters, both visually on the page and by the sounds they make. By sharing lots of stories, parents and caregivers have many opportunities to point out letters of the alphabet, demonstrate the sound of each letter, and help children understand that printed letters represent spoken words. All of this must happen before a child can learn to read printed words — and the good news is, you don’t need expensive toys or gadgets to do it!

Sharing the gift of language with your baby can fit easily into your daily routine:

•Reciteanurseryrhyme while feeding your baby

•Talkaboutthethings you see while you are out doing errands

•Describewhatyouare buying while you are shopping

•Singsongswhileyouare bathing your baby

•Shareabookwithyourchild before bedtime

The library can help you create a literacy-rich home environment. Your library card gives you access to books,

magazines, music, movies and more. Whether reading the printed word or singing along with music, everyone in the family is learning fun ways to use language.
