WORDLEOne of the most useful tools in upper primary has been word clouds (wordle), which is used for all manner of learning, such as reflections, analysing websites and summaries. Its visual appeal and graphic organisational structure has made it a really useful tool. Students have been turning written reflections, information reports and web sites into word clouds, which allows them to see patterns, comparisons and hierarchies, in a new and attractive way.

WIKISYear 4 has just started their Wiki. This is a developing tool and one that is just being trialled, but it has the potential to be an exciting web page for each class. Pages on different areas of learning can be created and links added. It is the democratic nature of this tool that has the most appeal for me as a teacher. Students are co-creators and co-contributors. The wiki really allows for a differentiated curriculum to be delivered. The quiet kids get to talk! It's early days, but it's exciting!

How Valuable are Web 2.0 Technologies?

Well they are invaluable. The allow us to differentiate learning, appeal to 'where students are at' and generally are another tool in the kit. However, it really is not a matter of doing the same old thing with a new tool. We are having to think about what we are teaching and why we are teaching it. Educating for the 21st century means knowledge + understanding + skills + ability to problem solve + willingness to work cooperatively, etc. Web 2.0 can help develop this.

Facebook fixation harms student grades(The Australian - Monday 13 April 2009)

US research has found that Facebook is having a detrimental effect on university results. 68% of students who used Facebook had a significantly lower grade-point average than those who did not use the site.

This week The King’s School ICT Steering Committee discussed the blocking of Facebook during Boarders’ Prep (study). A decision was made to leave Facebook open but to educate students about the positive and negative aspects of prolonged exposure to websites like Facebook. The School will monitor Facebook use during Prep time.

Positive Approach to Policies and Rules

Many Schools take a negative approach to policies and rules (don’t do this, don’t do that) … at TKS (as far as ICT Services is concerned) we have turned these negative policies and rules into positives. EG:

Educating all rather than punishing all Dealing with students as individuals Moving from fixed capacity home drives to

unlimited home drives (explanation follows) Moving from heavily filtered Internet to lightly

filtered Internet (explanation follows) Dealing with problems like accessing pornography

in a more positive manner (explanation follows)

Dear XXX XXXX (Year 10),

Please note:

The King's School monitors all school Internet traffic. Recent Internet activity indicates that your network account has been used to view a number of pornographic websites.

The School's 'Student Computer Use Policy' found in the Student Diary and on the School Intranet makes it very clear that this type of activity is against the School's rules.

Please ensure that your network account is secure by changing your account password on a regular basis.

Due to the seriousness of this matter, any future activity of this type will be reported to the Headmaster.

XXXX, please reply to this email as soon as possible so that I know you have read it. Please contact me should you have any concerns about your network account.

Thanks XXXX.

Regards,
