The three main challenges in building and construction projects are:

1. CommunicationDifferent stakeholders may have a different vision of the provided drawings and documents. For instance, when an architect has a picture of a building in his head and he aims to convey that information with a 2D drawing, the engineer might see the drawing differently as reading a paper drawing is not visually that simple and fast. And even if a 3D model is used, the amount of information included in the model might be limited. As a result, surprisingly lot of time is spent on communication rather than designing and engineering.

2. Information managementWhen you deal with a big amount of data - of a big project or a small but complex project with a lot of details it might be difficult to manage the information in a efficient way. If all information is neither coordinated in one place nor interoperable with used software, no accumulation of information is possible. Thus, getting the right information when needed becomes more difficult and more time will be spent on recreating the same documents again at different project stages. This can result in big errors and low quality of drawings if the information is copied in a wrong manner.

3. Change coordinationAs during the project many changes may occur, the documents need to be modified and updated continuously. If exploring and correcting changes cannot be done directly with the model, the documents are not automatically correct and up-to-date. This means that a lot of resources are used for checking your own work and correcting multiple documents. And again, the risk of poor quality and unprofitability increases.

All these problems are time consuming and thus create inefficiencies for the whole project. 2

Very often in a building and construction project there are many different stakeholders involved such as architects, structural engineers, general contractor, piling contractor, fabricators and manufacturers. For the project, every stakeholder is responsible for creating their own drawings, calculations and reports and also sharing the content of these different documents with other project members.

So as you can see from this slide, the number of different kinds of documents is enormous which means that there are multiple challenges related to communication, information management and quality coordination.

Altogether, building a 3D building by using 2D documents is inefficient as more resources are needed to outline the status of the project and visualize the building in advance. 4
