What combination of circumstances compels a human being to commit the most inhuman of crimes? As the nation tries to comprehend the tragic events in Newtown, NOVA correspondent Miles O’Brien investigates theories that rampage killers are driven most of all by the wish to die, not the urge to kill.

9PM February 27, Japan’s Killer Quake The March 11, 2011, earthquake in Japan was the world’s fourth-largest earthquake since record keeping began in 1900 and the worst ever to shake Japan. The seismic shock wave released more than 4,000 times the energy of the largest nuclear test ever conducted; it shifted the earth’s axis by six inches and shortened the day by a few millionths of a second. The tsunami slammed Japan’s coast with 30-feet-high waves that traveled six miles inland, obliterating entire towns in a matter of minutes.

Cuba’s Secret Side is a journey into the soul of Cuba. For three months, adventure filmmaker and author Karin Muller hitchhiked around Cuba – living with fisherman and farmers, Santeria priestess and country doctors. She was arrested over a dozen times, but in the end she managed to get beyond the propaganda and rhetoric to capture the true character of the Cuban people. Cuba’s Secret Side is an entertaining, insightful, and often humorous look at a side of Cuba that few foreigners get to see.

@ 8PMEver since the wake-up call that was Columbine,

schools and law enforcement have developed multiple strategies to prevent attacks. Indeed, the horror of Newtown needs to be seen in a context that’s not

defined by defeat. Remarkably, more than 120 school assaults have been thwarted in the past ten years.

But, while security hardware and physical barriers can play a deterrent role, it’s been psychologists working

hand in hand with law enforcement officers who have come up with the most helpful tools to prevent violent attacks. This documentary tells the story of a

powerfully effective Secret Service program - the Safe School Initiative - that’s helped schools

detect problem behavior in advance. Yet, despite the progress made, recent attacks

reveal a gaping hole in our safety net. Shooters like Adam Lanza, Jared Loughner and James Holmes all executed their attacks after they’d left their respective schools. In such cases, parents may be the first and only line of defense, parents who are terrified of their own children and who receive inadequate help from

the mental health and legal systems.

Extraordinary people risked their lives to help fugitive slaves escape via the clandestine

Underground Railroad. Among them was William Still of Philadelphia, a free black man who accepted

delivery of transported crates containing human “cargo.” This documentary reveals some of

the dramatic, lesser-known stories behind this humanitarian enterprise, and explores key Canadian connections, including the surprising fate of former slaves who crossed the border to “Freedom’s Land.”

Discover the life, music and influence of African-American gospel singer and guitar virtuoso Sister Rosetta Tharpe (1915-1973). Southern-born, Chicago-raised and New York-made, “She could play the guitar like nobody else … nobody.” During the 1940s-60s, Sister Rosetta introduced the spiritual passion of her gospel music into the secular world of rock ’n’ roll, inspiring the male icons of the genre.

A Sundance Film Festival selection for 2012, this new documentary based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Wall Street Journal senior writer Douglas A. Blackmon, explores the little-known story of the post-Emancipation era and the labor practices and laws that effectively created a new form of slavery in the South that persisted well into the 20th century. Blackmon examines the concept of “neoslavery,” which sentenced African-Americans to forced labor for violating an array of laws that criminalized their everyday behavior. Actor Laurence Fishburne (“CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”) narrates.
