Per il prossimo futuro ci sono due importanti novità. A partire da questa estate, ci sarà un artista “in residenza” ad Alessano. Quest’anno è il pittore Augustin Delloye, selezionato tra 170 candidati da una giuria internazionale. Esporrà ed illustrerà i suoi lavori durante la stagione concertistica estiva. Se l’esperimento darà risultati positivi, lo ripeteremo. Inoltre, alla fine di quest’anno, inizieremo ad organizzare alcuni concerti a Lecce, fuori dalla stagione del Festival, per andare incontro ai nostri amici appassionati di musica che risiedono in città.

Ed ora vi illustro alcuni momenti salienti dell’edizione 2018 di  M U S E S A L E N T I N E .

In estate, ospiteremo il quartetto Belcea, unanimemente riconosciuto come uno dei migliori al mondo. Ascolteremo i nostri giovani “afficionados” Filippo Gorini ed Olga Pashchenko ed il grande violinista italiano Enrico Gatti con il suo Ensemble Aurora.

A settembre il programma è molto vario. Il famoso pianista russo Alexei Lubimov ci regalerà un recital di contrasti tra musica antica e contemporanea ; la nuova star del clavicembalo francese, Justin Taylor, ci farà conoscere il suo nuovo ensemble, e ci sarà una serata romantica con i Quatuor Van Kuijk. Vi faremo anche scoprire nuovi prodigiosi talenti : il violoncellista italiano Paolo Bonomini e la giovanissima soprano napoletana Naomi Rivieccio, accompagnata da Stefano Demicheli e dal suo ensemble.

Prima di presentare il programma di M U S E S A L E N T I N E del 2018, vorrei condividere con voi alcune riflessioni sul significato del nostro Festival e sul suo futuro. Dopo la scorsa edizione, ci siamo resi conto che i concerti estivi hanno avuto un grande successo sia tra i Salentini, sia tra i visitatori, ma che la sessione di settembre è stata più tranquilla a causa del relativo decentramento di Alessano e dell’assenza di turismo locale.

La soluzione più semplice sarebbe stata quella di mantenere solo i concerti estivi. Ma oltre ad esserci accorti della temperatura elevata, della folla presente alle manifestazioni locali e della concorrenza con forme più popolari di intrattenimento, abbiamo anche preso atto che eliminando i concerti autunnali non avremmo centrato uno degli obiettivi principali del nostro Festival : portare un certo beneficio economico alla comunità locale.

Abbiamo quindi conservato una sessione intensiva a settembre, con una presenza artistica forte e variegata e ci siamo concentrati sull’opportunità di attrarre gruppi di villeggianti e turisti stranieri appassionati di cultura e di musica. Il risultato è stato un successo straordinario, perché la reputazione della qualità del Festival e la meravigliosa ospitalità locale stanno funzionando splendidamente.

Il che mi porta ad un secondo punto fondamentale : lo sviluppo. Quando una realtà cresce, c’è la tendenza naturale a pensare in grande. Ma nel mondo confuso di oggi, le persone sono alla ricerca di qualità, fascino, autenticità ed intimità. Abbiamo dunque deciso di preservare l’aspetto confidenziale ed accogliente della manifestazione. Ed i grandi artisti sono grati per i momenti di condivisione delle tradizioni locali, la cucina ed il pubblico che non è quello anonimo delle grandi manifestazioni.

For the near future, there are two important innovations. As of this summer, there will be an artist in residence in Alessano. This year, it is the painter, Augustin Delloye, selected from 170 candidates by an international jury. He will exhibit and explain his work during the summer series. If the experiment proves successful, we will repeat it. And at the end of this year, we will start organising a few concerts in Lecce, outside the festival season, to cater for our dedicated friends there.

Now let me share some highlights of the 2018 edition of M U S E S A L E N T I N E.

In summer, we will host the Belcea Quartet, recognised far and wide as one of world’s best. We will hear our young ‘afficionados’ Filippo Gorini and Olga Pashchenko and the great Italian violinist Enrico Gatti with his Ensemble Aurora.

In September, the programme is very varied. The great Russian pianist Alexei Lubimov will give a recital of contrasts between ancient and contemporary music, the new star of French harpsichord, Justin Taylor will introduce us to his new ensemble, and there will be a a romantic evening with the Quatuor Van Kuijk. We will also get you to discover amazing new talents : the Italian cellist Paolo Bonomini and the very young Neapolitan soprano Naomi Rivieccio accompanied by Stefano Demicheli and his ensemble.

Before introducing the programme of M U S E S A L E N T I N E

in 2018, I would like to share with you some thoughts about the concept and the future of our Festival. After the last edition we realised that the summer concerts had a great success with Salentini and visitors alike, but that the September series was quieter because of the relative remoteness of Alessano and the absence of local tourism.

The easy solution would have been to keep summer concerts only. But asides from the heat, the throng of local ceremonies and competition with more mundane forms of entertainment, we realised that this would not fulfil one of the core missions of our festival : to bring some kind of economic benefits to the local community.

So we kept an intensive session in September, with a strong and varied artistic presence and we focused on attracting groups of foreign lovers of culture and music. This has proven amazingly successful the reputation of the festival’s quality and the marvellous local hospitality are working wonders.

Which brings me to a second core point : size. When things develop, there is a natural tendency to think big. But in today’s polluted world, people are in search of quality, charm, authenticity and intimacy. We have decided to keep things small and cosy. And great artists are grateful for moments of communion with local traditions, cuisine and listeners who are not the anonymous crows of large venues.

L’anno seguente presenta Persona Rose alla Stems Gallery, sempre a Bruxelles. Di recente ha esposto alcuni quadri a New York, nel corso dell’Independent Art Fair. Attualmente vive e lavora a Bruxelles. Tra 170 candidature pervenute ad una prestigiosa giuria professionale, abbiamo selezionato un giovane artista che lavorerà nel Salento un mese intero. Si chiama Augustin Delloye. Le sue opere saranno esposte in anteprima a Palazzo Sangiovanni il 1° Agosto, prima del concerto e della cena per i soci sostenitori ed i mecenati, e poi saranno visibili per una settimana, fino all’esibizione del Belcea Quartet, il 6 agosto.EN For 2018, Muse Salentine have decided to broaden the scope of their activities to include an Artist Residency project. EN Child prodigy O L G A P A S H C H E N K O, born in 1986, gave her debut piano recital at the age of 9 in New York. Ever since, she has been enhancing her keyboard playing with the active practice of the harpsichord, the fortepiano and even the organ, not shying away from using them in a same performance. Her repertoire goes from Bach’s ‘Goldberg Variations’ to 20th-century composers such as Paul Hindemith and György Ligeti.EN Born in 1989 in St Petersburg, E V G E N Y S V I R I D O V first trained at the Conservatory there. While studying, Evgeny was a laureate of major international competitions such as the Menuhin Competition in Cardiff and the Paganini Competition in Genova in 2008. In 2010, on the sly from his conservatory teacher, he took part in a Bach competition in Leipzig and was awarded the first prize. In 2017 Evgeny won the Brugge International Competition Musica Antiqua, collected the audience prize as well as a CD production by the label Ricercar.

Da allora si è sempre distinta come una delle artiste più versatili nel panorama odierno degli strumenti a tastiera, passando dall’organo al clavicembalo ed al pianoforte moderno, anche all’interno della stessa esibizione. EN The Italian pianist, F I L I P P O G O R I N I received both the first prize and audience prize at the 2015 Telekom-Beethoven Competition Bonn, through his performances of works by Schubert, Beethoven (including the Diabelli Variations), Schoenberg, Bartók and Thomas Adès. At only twenty-two years old, Filippo has performed on many prestigious stages such as the Laeiszhalle (Hamburg), Herkulessaal (Munich), Konzerthaus (Berlin), Liederhalle (Stuttgart), Royal Castle of Warsaw, Royal Academy of Music (London), Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, and Sale Apollinee at Teatro La Fenice (Venice) among others. Since winning the competition, Filippo has toured Germany with the Klassische Philharmonie Bonn and made his debut at the Beethoven Easter Festival, to great critical acclaim, as well as taken part in the ‘Chamber Music connects the World’ concerts at the Kronberg Academy with Steven Isserlis. Last year he released his debut disc on Alpha Classics, featuring Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations. The disc has received outstanding reviews including 5 star ratings from The Guardian, Le Monde, BBC, as well as a ‘Diapason d’Or’.

EN B E L C E A Q U A R T E T Founded at the Royal College of Music in London in 1994, the quartet is based in Great Britain. However, the Romanian violinist Corina Belcea and the Polish violist Krzysztof Chorzelski, the two founding members, bring a very different artistic provenance to the ensemble while drawing from the best traditions of string quartet playing received from the quartet’s mentors : the members of the Alban Berg and Amadeus Quartets. This spectrum is extended by the French musicians Axel Schacher (violin) and Antoine Lederlin (cello). The Belcea Quartet blends its diverse influences into a common musical language. In 2012 and 2013, the quartet recorded the complete Beethoven quartets live in the Benjamin Britten Studio in Snape Maltings. This recording was released by Zig-Zag Territoires. As with its predecessors, this CD has been met with critical acclaim : it has been recognised with such prizes as the ECHO Klassik Award. In 2015, the quartet released under Alpha Classics its highly acclaimed recording of works by Webern, Berg and Schoenberg. September 2016 saw the release of the quartet’s recording of the complete Brahms string quartets & piano quintet, a CD acclaimed by the press and awarded with an ECHO Klassik as well as a ‘Diapason d’Or’ of the year 2016. Their recently released album, on Alpha Classics, presents Dmitri Shostakovich’s Quartet n°3 and the Quintet with the pianist Piotr Anderzsweski.

EN In 2007, N A Ï R I B A D A L and A D É L A Ï D E P A N A G E T officially created their duo, playing, on the advice of Claire Désert, a contemporary piece by Kurtág : Játékok. A work that was to crystallise their artistic intentions, made up of small, contemplative lyrical miniatures that are brimming with emotion and sensitivity. Játékok, ‘games’ in Hungarian, a concept that was to become the hallmark of their music-making. The winners of two prestigious international competitions for piano duo (in Rome in 2011 and Ghent in 2013), they have built up a repertory reflecting their dynamism and expressiveness. Their first album ‘Danses’, released on the Mirare label in 2015, received unanimous praise from the press. The duo has presented this programme at the most renowned festivals and in the concert halls most sought after by classical musicians, among them the Festival de La Roque d’Anthéron, La Folle Journée de Nantes, the Warsaw Opera House, the Cité de la Musique in Paris, the Flagey Hall in Brussels, the Dvořák Museum in Prague, the Teatro Borsellino in Sicily and the Auditorium del Massimo in Rome. Their second album, titled ‘The Boys’ and released in 2018 through Alpha Classics, is a tribute to the American piano duet of Arthur Gold and Robert Fizdale.

Un’opera che cristallizzerà il loro intento, fatto di piccole miniature liriche contemplative, colme di emozione e sensibilità. Játékok, “gioco” in ungherese, un’idea che sarà l’elemento caratterizzante della loro musica. Vincitrici di due prestigiosi concorsi internazionali per duo di pianoforte (a Roma nel 2011 ed a Gand nel 2013), costruiscono un repertorio ad immagine del loro dinamismo e della loro espressività. Il loro primo album “Danses” distribuito dall’etichetta Mirare nel 2015 è unanimemente elogiato dalla stampa e il duo lo ha presentato nei festival più rinomati e sui palchi più ambìti dagli interpreti del repertorio classico : il Festival de la Roque d’Anthéron, La Folle Journée de Nantes, l’Opera di Varsavia, la Cité de la Musique di Parigi, la sala Flagey di Bruxelles, il museo Dvorak di Praga, il teatro Borsellino in Sicilia, o ancora all’Auditorim del Massimo a Roma. EN A L E X E I L U B I M O V was the first to revive interest in Baroque music (particularly performed on period instruments) and contemporary music at the Moscow Conservatory. He is also an outstanding interpreter of Classical and Romantic works. During the 80s, when political restrictions in Russia were gradually loosening, he began performing in Western Europe, Japan and the US, becoming one of the world’s leading pianists. He has performed with such orchestras as the philharmonic orchestras of Israel, Los Angeles, Munich and St Petersburg, the Royal Philharmonic in London, Russian National Orchestra and many others. In historical performance, he has performed with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Wiener Akademie and Concerto Köln. In 2015, he received the Cage-Cunningham Fellowship. He has worked with many renowned record labels, including Alpha Classics, Zig-Zag Territoires, Melodiya, Erato, BIS and Sony. His recordings include the complete Mozart piano sonatas as well as piano works by Schubert, Chopin, Beethoven, Brahms and twentieth-century composers.

IT A L E X E I L U B I M O V è stato il primo artista a destare l’interesse per la musica barocca (eseguita soprattutto con strumenti d’epoca) e contemporanea nel Conservatorio di Mosca. È anche uno straordinario interprete di opere classiche e romantiche. Durante gli anni ’80, quando le restrizioni politiche in Russia si stavano gradualmente allentando, ha cominciato ad esibirsi in Europa occidentale, Giappone e Stati Uniti. È considerato uno dei migliori pianisti al mondo. Nel corso della sua carriera ha suonato con orchestre ed ensemble rinomati, quali le Filarmoniche di Israele, Los Angeles, Monaco e San Pietroburgo, la Royal Philharmonic di Londra, l’Orchestra Nazionale Russa, la Wiener Akademie, il Concerto Köln, The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment e molti altri. EN N A O M I R I V I E C C I O made her debut in November 2015 at the Teatro Giuseppe Verdi in Salerno in the leading role of Serpina in La serva padrona arranged by Antonello Mercurio, and appeared in several concerts organised by the Procura di Salerno. Since then she has performed as a soloist in a number of vocal recitals in Italy and abroad, from Grosseto to Ancona and as far afield as Romania. In 2016 she began her continuing collaboration with the Nuova Orchestra Scarlatti of Naples conducted by Gaetano Russo. EN Founded in 2012 by members of a Baroque orchestra masterclass, the ensemble found its current form in 2013 under the name of T A L E N T I V U L C A N I C I (Volcanic Talents) of the Fondazione Pietà de’ Turchini. The group took its first steps by bringing to light works by composers of the Neapolitan School that are completely unknown or unpublished. Highlights of its programmes have included Il zelo animato by Francesco Mancini ; compositions by Paradisi for organ and orchestra ; Porpora’s Gli orti esperidi on a libretto by Metastasio, the Stabat Mater of Nicola Bonifacio Logroscino ; Jommelli’s Requiem and many others.

IT N A O M I R I V I E C C I O Nel novembre del 2015 debutta presso il Teatro G. Verdi di Salerno nel ruolo principale di Serpina nella Serva Padrona rielaborata dal M° Antonello Mercurio e tiene parecchi concerti per la procura di Salerno. Negli anni successivi si esibisce come solista in diversi recital vocali in Italia ed all’estero, da Grosseto ad Ancona, arrivando fino in Romania. Dal 2016 collabora con la Nuova Orchestra Scarlatti di Napoli, diretta dal M° Gaetano Russo. IT Fondato nel 2012 dagli allievi di una masterclass per orchestra barocca, ha trovato nel 2013 la sua forma attuale sotto la denominazione di T A L E N T I V U L C A N I C I della Fondazione Pietà de’ Turchini. EN Q U A T U O R VA N K U I J K Currently ‘BBC New Generation Artists’, the Van Kuijk Quartet’s international accolades boast First, Best Beethoven and Best Haydn Prizes at the 2015 ‘Wigmore Hall International String Quartet competition’, First Prize and an Audience Award at the “Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition”, as well as becoming laureates of the Aix-en-Provence Festival Academy. Further to this, they join the ‘ECHO Rising Stars’ roster for the 2017 / 2018 season. Since their formation in 2012, the ensemble is already an established presence in major international venues, performing at the Wigmore Hall in London, Auditorium du Louvre and Salle Gaveau in Paris, Tonhalle in Zurich and Musikverein in Vienna. This season saw the quartet make their debut in Hong Kong, Australia & Taiwan, as well as North America for appearances at The Frick Collection in New York, The Phillips Collection in Washington DC, and Salle Bourgie in Montreal. The Quartet records exclusively for Alpha Classics. Their debut recording dedicated to Mozart was released to outstanding critical acclaim in Autumn 2016, and was followed by a disc of French music (Debussy, Ravel, Chausson) in late 2017.

In June 2017, Le Consort won First Prize and the Audience Prize at the Loire Valley International Early Music Competition, whose jury president was William Christie. The ensemble has already played in Paris, at the MA Festival in Bruges and others venues. Le Consort will record for the Alpha Classics label a disc devoted to the Complete Trio Sonatas by Jean-François Dandrieu.EN J U S T I N T A Y L O R won First Prize in 2015 at the prestigious International Musica Antiqua Harpsichord Competition in Bruges, obtaining in addition the Audience Prize, the Alpha Prize, and the EUBO Developing Trust Prize.
