Musings of Mother Danáe

Last night, we had a remarkable celebration of our ministry together. The Bishop was there, clergy colleagues from all over the ECMN and other denominations came to rejoice, friends of our congregation happily celebrated with us, and we opened ourselves to where the Holy Spirit was calling us in our next chapter of work in this small corner of God’s vineyard. It was a time outside of time — a place where the resurrection of our spirits was felt as we marked this sacred time to acknowledge our coming into a new way of being.

One of my favorite professors in graduate school at Gonzaga was a Jesuit priest named Fr. John Mossi. He was quite charismatic and often ended his correspondence with the following phrase, “Practice resurrection daily.” Mulling that over, I would wonder what practicing resurrection would look like in my life at that moment. It was a powerful perspective that shifted my worldview. What does it feel like to look at the world and the people in it in light of practicing resurrection?

Currently, we are in Eastertide, and near the end of May, we will be celebrating Pentecost — what we consider the official birth of our church. But it is more than that. It is a profound time to remember our great commission of going out into the world with the Good News. Last night, in the midst of our celebration, it was also the feast day of St. Mark, and the scriptures we used were from that day — all pointing us toward this great commission. We are Easter people and are called to practice resurrection in this wonderful, broken, awe-inspiring, crazy world that we are a part of. If we don’t do this, who will?

This is what Jesus was called to do and this is what Jesus calls us to continue to do in our modern, current lives, with whatever gifts and wounds we have to offer. Giving ourselves completely to God is easier said than done, of course. We often want to be in charge of how God uses us as God’s hands and feet in the world. Our pilgrimage of faith with and in God is not conducive to our control. Often we find that God uses our wounds far more than what we consider our strengths in order to proclaim the Good News to others. This is practicing resurrec-tion daily.

I want to offer you a prayer of inspiration as you continue your Eastertide journey into Pentecost. I pray that the Holy Spirit will come to you in that flash of fire and wind that renews your spirit as only God can.

I’m the Secret Fire

I’m the secret Fire in everything, and everything smells like Me.The living breathe in My sweet perfume,And they breathe out praise of Me.They never dieBecause I am their Life.

I flame out — intense, godly Life — over the shining fields of corn,I glow in the shimmer of the fire’s embers, I burn in the sun and the moon and the stars. The secret Life of Me breathes in the windAnd holds all things together soulfully.

This is God’s voice.

I kind of feel like General McArthur when he said, “I shall return.”

I have returned to St. Ed’s from my fourteen-month interim assignment at The Church of the Epiphany, Plymouth. This has been a rewarding and fruitful experience as a part of my journey toward ordination as a Deacon in the ECMN.

Reentry is a matter of learning over again the way things are done at St. Ed’s and how Mother Danáe wants me to serve. From the very beginning of my journey I have had the blessings of being in con-tact with The Rev. Chip Whitacre, who has been both a mentor and a friend.

My stories, experiences, and gifts are part of what I bring to my ministry. As many of you know I have a passion around Native American Spirituality. I can and will bring more of this to my time at St. Ed’s moving forward.

I am blessed to have been raised up from St. Edward the Confessor and will do all I can going forward to continue to earn your trust. I will do this all “with God’s help”.

See you in church on Sunday, and peace and blessings to all at St. Ed’s.

VesTry ProFile: Julie Smith

I have been a member of St. Edward’s since 2003. We joined on the recommendation of our priest at St. John the Baptist in Linden Hills, after moving out to Plymouth. My family and I have been active in the church in a variety of areas from Vestry to IT support. This Sunday our whole family was working in some capacity: Stu and Karsten (11) ushered, Keegan (9) acolyted and I was in the nursery with Carrie and two kids!

Stu and I were married at St. John’s in 1999 and I was confirmed in the Episcopal Church in 2002. I was introduced to the Episcopal Church by Stu when we were dating. While he lived in Japan for a year, I went each week by myself. This may not sound like a big deal, but for a non-practicing Catholic, this was a monumental spiritual change and I am so thankful for the blessings and renewed faith the Church has given me!

My favorite thing about St. Ed’s is that it is flexible. Children are encouraged to participate in all aspects of worship, there are giggles instead of frowns when kids or adults do something unexpected, and there are hugs all around whenever we get together.

I feel a great energy from Mother Danáe and from the community and all of the opportunities we have to be together. I am passionate about women having opportunity to spend time together and share their lives with each other, and recently started the St. Ed’s Women’s Group. I am especially excited about the new Second Sunday program. It is providing us all with a new way to actively worship God and fol-low Jesus and get out into the community!

As the snow melts we will witness Spring, the season of renewal and growth and brightness. I encour-age you all to look around and see that season in our church and in each other.

Outreach UpdatesMama Ada Foundation – The Episcopal Church in Minnesota’s mission project 2013 is to sup-port the Mama Ada Foundation. Mama Ada is a woman who has a farm in the Rift Valley of Kenya, Africa. She realized that the children living around her were living in poverty — many orphaned by AIDS — and there were young people without school tuition and farmers without seeds; plus there were no jobs. Several years ago she was vis-iting family here in Minnetonka, met friends at St. David’s Episcopal Church and shared her dream to help her community. This led to the Mama Ada Foundation, whose mission is to release the Rift Valley Province from poverty and stimulate economic growth. The foundation works with the Anglican churches in the area, but needs support to accomplish Mama Ada’s goals.

As part of our outreach program, we want to raise money for Mama Ada’s work. There are a couple ways to do this: you can make out a check to the church and designate it for the Mama Ada Foun-dation, or take one of the coin boxes at church (which might be a good way to get the kids in-volved). We are also going to publicize this at the plant sale and ask people buying plants to add a buck or two to their payment. There are brochures at church with further information on Mama Ada.

Vicksburg Commons – We are continuing to pre-pare and serve a meal for the IOCP client families at 5:30 pm on the third Thursday of the month at the community center there, with the help of the UUM Church. May 16 will be the next date. We also started providing and serving a luncheon meal on the fourth Wednesday of the month for the Caring for Kids Initiative; the next one will be on May 22. Also, as a part of our second Sunday outreach program, we will be putting on a brunch for the families at Vicksburg on July 14. If anyone is interested in helping out at any of these activi-ties, let Jeff or Chip know.

Sandwich Crew – There are still several members of our congregation who go to St. Mark’s Cathe-dral every week to make sandwiches and snack bags to be distributed to homeless people in Min-neapolis. We have found that many are homeless students at Metropolitan Community and Techni-cal College.

Meals on Wheels – Meals on Wheels of Wayzata/Plymouth needs help delivering meals in our area. It involves about 70-80 minutes work each time. You pick up the meals at the Carlson Company at 394 and 494 and deliver them in the Wayzata/Plymouth area. The beauty of this is that they don’t require a certain number of days if your schedule is full. If you’re interested or need more information, see Jeff.

Episcobuilders updateEpiscoBuilders has confirmed a week build with Habitat this summer. Here are the details:

• Dates of build: August 6–9, 2013 (Tues- Fri)

• Site Address: 5909 Aquila Ave. N. , New Hope

• Time: 8:30 – 4 pm• Volunteers needed: 12–13 daily (must be 16

or older)• Type of construction: Rehab of a single-

family home

Please put these dates on your calendar. Sign-up procedure will be in place soon. Volunteers will be needed for working on the site as well as for providing lunches. Talk with Lynne Whitacre for further details.

The Lampstand May 2013

PLACE-The Missional ChurchThere are a lot of new terms being bandied about in the Episcopal Church in Minnesota lately. The Episcopal Church in Minnesota is itself one of the new terms that is replacing Diocese of Minnesota in the lexicon of Episcopal church language, even though Minnesota is still technically a diocese. Faith community is another example of a term that is replacing the term parish previously used to refer to a local church.

So, why all the changes? First, I think it is safe to say that they signal a change in thinking and style that is reflected in Bishop Brian’s leadership. The Episcopal Church in Minnesota does not reside at 1730 Clifton Place in Minneapolis. Instead it resides in all the Episcopal faith communities throughout Minnesota, and it endures in the col-laboration of those communities with each other and the staff at the Episcopal Center. And those faith communities are not all parish churches. Breck School, Shattuck-St. Mary’s, Episcopal Homes, and Sheltering Arms are communities of faithful people doing God’s work in the world too.

Secondly, words matter. What we call things re-flects how we think about them.

You may recall times past when more centralized governance of the Episcopal Church in Minnesota was the norm. The term “diocese” came to mean the controlling power that interfered with the abil-ity of the parish church to be fully empowered in its locale. To get away from that view of the church in Minnesota, and move toward an institution that is fully empowered at all levels, a change in terms was necessary.

But “The Episcopal Church in Minnesota” and “faith communities” are not the only new terms we are encountering. The term missional, which reflects a theology of local churches engaging their neigh-borhood, is also becoming part of our vocabulary. It stems from a discussion relating the cultural

context of the church of today to the church of the first century — a time when the church existed in a multicultural environment when people were at best suspicious and often openly hostile to the small local communities of Christians.

Over the millennia, the Church has risen to a position of power and authority, which has been eroded by dramatic changes in the cultural environment over the last half century that make it look more like the cultural environment of the first century Church. The number of people who do not claim affiliation with any faith community is large and on the rise. People whose busy lives pull them in many directions at once are no longer attending church the way they used to do. We simply cannot expect that they will come to us anymore.

But this does not mean the end of church. The end of church as we once knew it has happened. This has been seen most recently at St. Edward’s, as changes in budget have forced changes to staffing. Some wonder if this is the end — the last gasp of survival before failure and closure. But we are resurrection people. Death does not mean the end. God is still calling St. Edward’s, and the end of one way of being will lead to new life as it must if we will only join God in seeking it. New things are already happening that are promising and excit-ing. There is much to be hopeful about.

St. Edward’s is a faith community of The Episcopal Church in Minnesota, it is the Episcopal Church in Wayzata, Minnesota; called to join the work that God is already doing in the neighborhood. Like many other churches it has its challenges, but St. Edward’s is not dead.

Blessings,Chip

British Invasion! No, the cast of Downton Abbey is not coming to St. Edward’s (darn it!), but the Rev. Paul Hamilton from St. Nicholas’ Church in Ingrave, Diocese of Chelmsford, England, is! This coming September and October, Rev. Hamilton will be joining our community as he takes his sabbatical. Currently, he is planning his time here and is in need of some help:• Does anyone know of any cheap, short-term

housing that is in the vicinity of St. Edward’s so he can bike or take the bus fairly easily? He would need the housing for two months and is looking for something that will ensure privacy, quiet, and solitude. He is also willing to house sit if someone is going to be away.

• Also, does anyone have an adult male bike that he can borrow for the two months that he is here?

• He is passionate about karate and would like to join a local dojo to continue his training while he is here.

Please contact Mo. Danáe if you have suggestions: [email protected].
