CIUUICII MEM II Kits WHO ATIEMIDII A MII.ITAIIY HOI'. Are Threatened with Expulsion Elhlr if the Minister of n Cullfcirnlu Toxmi. San Bkunaudino, April 16. So- ciety in this city is very muck wrought up QVer the action of the congregation of the First-- " Haptist Church in working to expel two young members for having attend- ed a dancing party given at tha Armory a lew weeks ago. The situation is still further complicated by a combination which has been made by the ministers of the. city, all of whom, with, otic, exception, have agreed that any member ex- pelled from other churches cannot be admitted into their own without first making humble acknowledg ment of their fault. In fact the ministers have established a boy- cott of their own. Not long since a number of the most prominent ladies in the city gave a cottillion at the Armory in honor of Company 12, Ninth Regi- ment, N. G. C. The party was largely attended and was one of the most brilliant social events in the history of the city, but two mem- bers of the Baptist Church have been called upon to explain their conduct in attending, the rigidity of church discipline seeming to have been violated when members of the organization lent their presence on that occasion. It. C. King is a member of Company K, and of course was present at the party given in honor of the organization. He is a member of the Baptist Church, as is also Miss Pearl Barnes, who had accepted an invi- tation and attended the cotillion. Hand Concert. Are Threatened with Expulsion Elhlrif the Minister of n Cullfcirnlu

Toxmi.

San Bkunaudino, April 16. So-

ciety in this city is very muckwrought up QVer the action of thecongregation of the First--" HaptistChurch in working to expel twoyoung members for having attend-ed a dancing party given at thaArmory a lew weeks ago. Thesituation is still further complicatedby a combination which has beenmade by the ministers of the. city, all of whom, with, otic, exception, have agreed that any member ex-

pelled from other churches cannotbe admitted into their own withoutfirst making humble acknowledgment of their fault. In fact theministers have established a boy-cott of their own.

Not long since a number of themost prominent ladies in the citygave a cottillion at the Armory inhonor of Company 12, Ninth Regi-ment, N. G. C. The party waslargely attended and was one of themost brilliant social events in thehistory of the city, but two mem-bers of the Baptist Church havebeen called upon to explain theirconduct in attending, the rigidityof church discipline seeming to havebeen violated when members of theorganization lent their presence onthat occasion. It. C. King is amember of Company K, and ofcourse was present at the partygiven in honor of the organization. He is a member of the BaptistChurch, as is also Miss PearlBarnes, who had accepted an invi-tation and attended the cotillion.

Al'ltlL 27, 1895.

UkadstkkUts, a publication that

reaches the business men of theworld, lately remarked the stabality

of the Hawaiian Republic and in

timated that American interestswtuld be best served by the

"closer political union" of theIslands and the United States.

A dispatch from London says

that the latest communication be-

tween the Foreign Office and Japanin recard to peace negotiations withChina are reported to have led to a

distinct declaration on the part oflmt she is not desirous of

j..r-- ..

any interference by luiropeaupowers.

It is frequently intimated from

the United States that MinisterTTntrh will iro to Washington for

this country. This is speculation on

the heels of conjecture on the futurof Minister Thurston. If a changeis to be made, Mr. Hatch would

have almost the unanimous endorse

ment of the people of the islandsfor the place.

Ai'TUK all, public work inauguwith lanrelv the purpose of

furnishing employment is at very

best but a makeshift. This may bea pessimistic remark, but it is only

too true. There is but one methodof insuring permanent prosperity tosuch a country as this. That way

is to have a laud system to raise upa class of small holders. They will

maintain themselves and be thebulwark of the land's peace andplenty.

A mild sort of conspiracy is on

foot in Hawaii and abroad for an

assault on the treasury of thiscountry. One combination of persons imprisoned incidental to theuprising is already in workingorder. They intend to exhaust theresources of all available courts in

.efforts to collect damages. Thegovernment here has fortified itselfpretty well in anticipation of warclaims and is ready for all coiners.

The Star has been asked if theBureau of Immigration has thepower to refuse applications for theimportation of Japanese laborersa id endorse requests for Chineseor Portuguese field hands. Thelaw of the country vests the Hoard

with that authority. A questiontweeu local statutes and treatystipulations, if such arises here, cannot be answered off-han-d innewspaper.

The returned Portland businessman who asserted that Hawaii afforded an inviting field fr capitalbut was no place for a man withoutmeans, was dealing in cold facts

It is correct that the Islands have asuplus of ordinary labor. What is

wanted just now is men with say$ 2,000 and upwards to undertakethe culture of coffee, fruits, fibreplants or cane growth. The lastmay be entered on theplan with less money. There isnow one private company that canplace on land men with perhapsless then the sum named. Thereare thousands of men of the $2,000class or size abroad, if they couldonly be reached. The purpose ofthe government is to facilitate thesettlement of all the districts and abill making most liberal provisionsis ready for presentation to thelawmakers.

It is true that the powers thatbe at Washington have formally

'stated that born Americans nownaturalized citizens of this country, have no claim whatever upon theUnited States. They lost theirrights when they renounced origin-

al allegiance. This has been theview held by all men of law hereand elsewhere whenever the questiou arose. People who could thinkotherwise simply deluded themselves. There were many duringlt.st year and the year before whoexpressed sympathy or pity forliowler and men like him in pecul

lar views 011 citizenship. JSo onethought, however, they could be somad .as to convince themselves thatthe Government of the United Stateswould in any event accept a complication for itself to further theirpersonal schemes. The news fromWashington will be a shock toBowler, He had reached the beliefthat theState department there waspimply bound to take up his case,

The action of the Council inrecommending the conditionalnarcon of V. V. Asliloicl isscarcely more than could have: . , , ,

been expected wouiu louow insconviction. 1 lis case of all otherswas necttliar. Under the circumstances considering all the factsrelating to the gentleman personally, his public career hereand Ins trial by the military commission, the (jovcrnnient is do-

ing a just thing in giving himhis lreedom. in the neat 01battle and when every one wasexercised over the events of Jan.uar)- - it was not to be expectedthat any other result man wasexperienced oy tne prisonerswould louow, mil now tnai mat-ters haves ttlcd down in the old

oove it is probable the councilwill reconsider quite a numberof the cases and pursue the samecourse that taken in the case of

V. Ashford. Among themasses on both sides of the political fence such action would beendorsed.

If there is any doubt in theminds of the people who usewire lencc regarding the qualityof the wire we sell; if there isany one who believes that American galvanized wire is superiorin quality to the liuropean arilclc, the little story we tell hereshould convince tnem 01 tneirmistake. Our European wirehas been tested at the iron worksand shows a tensile strength of2760 pounds that is to say thewire was stretched by machineryand when the indicator showed2760 the wire parted. Again itwas tested by being lolledaround an iron bar and poundedto ascertain whether the galva-nizing would come off andwhether the anncal-n- was allright. Every test was satisfactory as the samples in our storewill prove, tsut there were peopie then who wanted nothing thatwas made where tnc governments were of monarchial formAmerico-maniac- if the termmay be allowed, and who insistedupon their came scraicnmg ineirbacks noon American wire, w e

ordered a hundred coils and putit through the same tests exactlythat had been given the miropean article. '1 he wire broke at760 pounds, the galvanizingcracked when it was hammeredand the annealing was imperfectThe result is we have a hundredcoils ot beautilul looking wireon our hands lhat we would notsell at any price, because it wouldlniure our wire trade lor everTalk about cattle rubbing theibacks against it, why, if a calfshould lall against it, it wouldbreak in pieces.

For good, strong economicafencing the Jones Locked shouldbe adopted and it should bemade ot the wire we sell. Thestays cost six cents each and thewashers necessary to fasten thewire to them about twocents. The stays may be usedfrom six to thirty feet apart

to the character of theground and the purpose forwhich the paddock is to beused. People who have triedthe fence like it and recommendit to their friends. We have alarge stock of wire, stays andwashers, and we will be pleasedto supply the material or any in-

formation concerning it to peo-ple who use lences.

We have lately received thecutest and best tea strainers im-

mid Mtipprr,

One of the most pleasant affairsf the season took place at liana

ony Hail iriuay evening, meoccasion was the celehration of the76th anniversary of the I. O. O. 1

About 150 were present. Excelsior ana Harmony lougcs wereout in almost full force. Rebeknhlodge was well represented. Afew children attended with theirparents.

The decorations were very pretty.Garlands of evergreens hungacross the main hall in every direction. Elowers were arranged hereand there.

The opening ceremony wasformal. There was prayer by theChaplain, and the Secretary readthe proclamation. The anniversaryhymn was then sung by the entireaudience. This was followed by areading by the N. G., instrumentalmusic and finally the benediction

Native musicians discoursedlively music in the early evening, and for the dauce that followed,Several choice airs were sung,Dancing began at 9 and continuedto about midnight. There werefifteen numbers on the program

All kinds of light refreshmentsabounded. The Elite Ice CreamParlors furnished lemonade, icecream, sherbte, etc. Shanes una- -

wigsen was the efficient dispenser. The ante-roo- was reserved forgentlemen as a smoking parlor. The unanimous verdict of all wa--

the affair eclipsed anj thing of itsnature seen in Honolulu in along while. It is probable that the j

next celebration will be given 111 alarge hall, to which the public willbe invited.
