Teaching Pronunciation

Pronunciation is probably the most neglected aspect of English language teaching. Most teachers often lack confidence to teach it methodically. There are some differences in pronunciation between the students’ mother tongue and English. Children are generally good at imitating and will pick up your model of pronunciation more easily than adults. Pronunciation teaching forms an integral part of your presentation of new words and sentence patterns. The need to provide a good model of pronunciation in these early stages is therefore of great importance.

Why teach phonics “Give a man a fish, and he eats once. Teach a ma

n to fish, and he eats forever.” Teaching phonics provides a valuable skill that they can use for a life time. If students learn how the letters combine to represent the sounds, they will be able to pronounce unfamiliar words and receive the tools for becoming independent readers.
