Keynote Speakers
Pernille Ripp @pernilleripp
Pernille Ripp is an expert in literacy and technology integration and dedicates her research and practice to developing engaged and empowered students and communities. She is a teacher, speaker, author, blogger, and passionate advocate for education. She is a Skype Master Teacher; recipient of the 2015 WEMTA Making IT Happen Award; and the 2015 ISTE Award for Innovation in Global Collaboration. In 2010, Pernille founded The Global Read Aloud, a global literacy initiative that began with a simple goal in mind: one book to connect the world. From its humble beginnings, the GRA has grown to connect more than 4,000,000 students in more than 80 different countries. She is the author of Passionate Readers -The Art of Reaching and Engaging Every Child and Passionate Learners – How to Engage and Empower Your Students, now in its second edition, and Empowered Schools,
Empowered Students, both focusing on creating learning spaces and communities where students thrive and all stakeholders are empowered and passionate about learning. She has also authored Reimagining Literacy Through Global Collaboration published in 2016 by Solution Tree. You can follow Pernille’s work on Blogging Through The Fourth Dimension. Pernille’s current research interest is in creating passionate literacy environments within the restriction of our current educational systems to helping students fall in love with literacy again. She uses her own classroom as a laboratory, as well as learns from the many educators she works with across the world.
Debbie Silver @drdebbiesilver
With 30 years spent as a teacher, staff development instructor, and university professor, Debbie Silver doesn’t just know her way around the classroom – she is familiar with the challenges educators face at every level, from kindergarten to college. The former Louisiana Teacher of the Year has given presentations around the world (including 49 states, Canada, Mexico, Europe and Asia), helping audiences to interact with students on a deeper level.
Debbie’s best-selling book, Drumming to the Beat of Different Marchers: Finding the Rhythm for Differentiated Learning, has been recognized for its insights into research-based models, teaching strategies, management tips, and inspirational “from-the-heart” lessons for addressing individual differences. It is her humor, her practicality, and her ability to connect with students, teachers, parents, and administrators, however, that has made her a popular choice for keynotes, workshops, and breakout sessions.
Her newest release, Fall Down 7 Times, Get Up 8: Teaching Kids to Succeed, is being heralded by parents, teachers, and administrators as a “fresh approach to getting kids to work smarter and better.” In it she explains motivational theory and provides down-to-earth examples of concrete, applicable guidelines for helping students overcome setbacks and failure to foster lifelong success.
Her mission is to remind teachers of how important they are in the lives of children, highlighting both learning theory as well as tools for communication. She makes important points while sharing poignant stories and lots of laughs. She firmly believes that teachers need to be having fun, and staying in touch with their passion, to make their biggest impact in the classroom. When she’s not working as an educational speaker and motivator, Debbie enjoys spending time in Texas with her husband, Dr. Lawrence Silver, and with their five sons and their families in five different states.

Global collaboration isn’t meant to make more work for you, but instead meant to engage students and staff in a more authentic manner in already pre-existing learning. You will find ways to fit global learning and global connections into what you are already doing, without the need to be 1to1 or have crazy amounts of technology.

With 28% of adults reporting that they have not read a book in the last 12 months, we are facing a mounting reading crisis. So what can we, as the educators who teach this future generation of readers, do to create more engaging reading experiences? In this session, based on the book Passionate Readers: The Art of Reaching and Engaging Every Child, 7th-grade teacher Pernille Ripp will help you re-discover the keys of creating a community of readers, no matter the constricts facing your time. Focusing on teacher reading identity, classroom environment and library, as well as student reading identity, this is a session sure to inspire. From re-thinking major literacy decisions to all of the small decisions we make daily; this is meant to be a practical session that will offer up ideas to be implemented the very next day.

Thursday Breakout Sessions: Pernille Ripp Passionate Writers – Helping Students Become True Writers
While writing continues to be a skill that all children must develop, how do we help students feel like true writers, the type of writers who feel like their work matters beyond the classroom lesson? In this session, we will discuss small tweaks and practical tips on how to help students develop their writer’s voice to see writing as something that matters to them. With this renewed investment, we can help them dig deeper in their writing explorations, to truly become passionate writers no matter their skill level.

Why Global Citizenship Education?
Saskatchewan Council for International Cooperation - In this globalized world, the challenges that face humanity are increasingly global in scope and therefore require global solutions. This has significant implications for educating the next generation of global citizens to rise to the challenge. In order to move humanity towards sustainable, peaceful solutions to global challenges, schools need to prepare students to become critically informed, motivated, globally competent citizens with social problem solving skills and a willingness to challenge misinformation and government inaction.
