FESTIVAL HELLENIKA® is an exciting and diverse arts festival which provides an open platform for people of all backgrounds to showcase Hellenic connections to the arts and their Australian manifestations. It is held annually in Adelaide from late February to June and is coordinated by the South Australian Council for the Greek Cultural Month Incorporated. It is a community umbrella organisation with membership open to any group, society or individual with an interest in Hellenic arts and culture. We seek to embrace all art forms including literature, performance, music, cinema, art and architecture, history, outdoor events, develop new work and encourage emerging artists.
The defining feature of FESTIVAL HELLENIKA®, is Hellenism - the study of all things Greek past and present both locally and internationally.
Since its foundation in 1991 with the support of the Consulate General of Greece in South Australia, Festival Hellenika® has developed into one of the premier cultural events in Adelaide and remains a major part of South Australia’s cultural scene. The Festival is non-political, non-sectarian, non profit and independent and is facilitated, coordinated and presented by the South Australian Council for the Greek Cultural Month Inc (SACGCM). The Governing board of volunteers is elected every two years by member organisations.
Life comes to FESTIVAL HELLENIKA® through our artists, presenters, sponsors and audiences like you. We welcome you all and invite you to come join us in celebrating one of the premier festivals of this state by immersing yourself in our rich and exciting program.
I am writing this message with mixed emotions as I will be stepping down as President after this year’s festival. Festival Hellenika® is constantly evolving. I believe that our festival is a leader in cultural excellence, creativity, nurturing and promoting all aspects of Hellenism and its Australian manifestations. The Festival Hellenika® committee, who every year continue to be passionate, generous and committed to the Festival, are very proud of their achievements to date.
Our program is jam-packed and designed to inspire, engage and introduce people of all ages to the world of Hellenic culture.
The content of our program highlights a myriad of experiences including performances, presentations, exhibitions, concerts and events that will have you coming back.
We look forward to welcoming new and familiar faces to our events throughout 2020, as attendance continues to increase each year.
Message from the PresidentΜΗΝΥΜΑ ΤΗΣ ΠΡΟΕΔΡΟΥ
Some of our highlights this year include our musical concert: Zeibekiko: the most popular dance (Laikos horos) of urban Greeks. A philosophy play "Zeno’s Secret" by Dr Edward Spence will encompass themes of Stoic philosophy, and how to be happy in an unhappy world. This year we are also launching “OINOS”, a wine dinner like no other, exploring the history and indigenous grape varieties of Greece. We have a range of talks that will engage you consisting of topics on Classics to Greek migration and Greek language. We look forward to seeing you at these events over the next few months.
I would like to thank the Government of South Australia, our valued sponsors, supporters and attendees for continuing their support for our festival this year. We are grateful to all of them.
I trust our Festival will immerse you in the richness, abundance and variety that is Greek Culture. Enjoy.

Marina Satti & FonésPresented by WOMAD
Considered an inspiration by young people across Greece, Marina Satti is a performer with a deep love of theatre, design and song.
Her track Mantissa became an anthem of hope in the Northern summer of 2017 and the accompanying single-shot video clip has already had more than 40 million views.
With her all-female polyphonic vocal group, Fonέs, Satti’s live show is a joyous, choreographed celebration of equality, pride and tolerance – obviously influenced by Greek, Balkan and Middle–Eastern music – but with a modern, urban edge.

MEDEA by Pier Paolo Pasolini (1969) Presented by Festival Hellenika®
Pier Paolo Pasolini's film version of Medea draws on Euripides's play and is now considered one of the great masterpieces of classical cinema. In this film version of the ancient Greek myth, the story begins with Jason and the Argonauts' voyage to steal the Golden Fleece from Colchis with the help of the princess Medea. The story takes a dark twist however when Jason tires of his foreign-born wife and abandons her and her children. Medea then wreaks a terrible revenge on those who betrayed her. Visually astonishing and much underrated at the time of its release in 1969, this richly complex film presents an entirely new perspective of the story and is now regarded as one of Pasolini’s greatest films. At its centre is the extraordinary performance of Maria Callas as Medea in her only film acting role.
The film will be introduced by Joanna Tsalikis who will provide a brief analysis of Pasolini’s approach to this powerful and enduring myth.

The Iliad - Out Loud Presented by Adelaide Festival
Homer didn’t write page-turners. The greatest of all battle sagas was designed to be actively listened to over 15 or so breathless hours. For many years, actor/director William Zappa pored over 17 translations, convinced that the live transaction between orator and audience could be rekindled in our times.
The extraordinary result is a performing version for himself, three actors (Heather Mitchell, Blazey Best and Socratis Otto), Michael Askill on percussion and Hamed Sadeghi on Persian oud: it comes i n at a snappy 9 hour reading, including enlightening asides from Zappa as part fanboy, part tour guide, and part personal trainer to get our flabby attention spans into peak ancient shape.
He and his troupe make clear this masterpiece – about pride and greed, glory and horror – doesn’t need resuscitating. It’s eternally alive and salient.

Zeibekiko Presented by Festival Hellenika®
Zeibekiko remains the most popular dance (Laikos horos) of urban Greeks. There has been much debate over the years about its name, its origin, its history and how, where and when it should be danced. What we know, however, is that it has become an individual’s very personal expression of sorrow and longing through dance but at the same time it is also an expression of strength, resistance and hope.
Thousands of zeibekika have been written and sung by Greece’s most famous composers, lyricists and vocalists. Millions more have danced to them.
This year’s festival concert “ZEIBEKIKO” coordinated and directed by Tassos Capetanakis, will be an entertaining celebration of this unique dance with narration, visual images, dancing and of course many great zeibekika songs dedicated to issues of every day life that touch the Greek soul. Featuring vocalists Anthea Dalagiorgos, Stamatis Dimitrakopoulos, Jim Mountzouris, and making her stage comeback in her home town, Sunday Beos, backed by our own fantastic musicians directed by Paul Gelios and also featuring the GOCSA Academy dancers under the guidance of Yiannis Oikonomou, “ZEIBEKIKO” promises to be a fascinating and exciting show.

Inter-generational Family History: Greek Migration to Australia 1820 – 2020Spiros SarrisPresented by the Panrhodian Society
Researching and documenting family genealogy and migration history is gaining popularity on an unprecedented scale. Due to the advent of the Internet, search engines, mobile devices and social media it has never been easier to undertake such projects, however this may not necessarily be the case.
With the passing of the generations of migrants who came to Australia it has become increasingly difficult to complete the family history 'mosaic'. What are the issues, obstacles and opportunities currently facing aspiring family members who wish to discover their Hellenic heritage?
There will be a substantial Q&A session at the conclusion of the presentation.

Gardens of PromiseCelebrating the Traditions of the Migrant GardenPresented by OEEGA (Organisation of Hellene & Hellene Cypriot Women of SA) in conjunction with SA History Festival
The emergence of the Mediterranean garden in Australia evolved with the first and second generation of European migrants, many of whom were from rural and village backgrounds. Unlike their early British counterparts, they brought a range of skills, farming practices and traditions from their homelands that were much more in keeping with the Australian environment.
A wonderful array of, vegetables, fragrant herbs, fruit bearing trees and ornamental plants, distinguished the backyard gardens of our early migrant communities. They recognised also the many social, health and environmental benefits from growing their own fresh produce. The backyard garden was perceived as another room and an essential part of the household space. Join with us for this delightful photographic exhibition and a guest speaker (TBA) to celebrate our gardening history and stay for some garden nibbles and refreshments!

Graffiti over Marble A portrait of Greece in CrisisJorge Sotirios Presented by Festival Hellenika®
Graffiti over Marble explores the human cost of the Greek economic crisis. With its myriad voices and vibrant characters, this memoir focuses on a turbulent drama played out in the streets, inside homes, at the workplace and within tavernas and cafes. From Athens to the traditional village, from remote islands to the Balkan borderlands, a portrait emerges of a nation under siege.
Here you’ll read about the conflicts between the young and old, the devastating impact of austerity on a ravaged middle class, which has fuelled the neo-Nazi menace, and the despair of refugees as Fortress Europe raises its drawbridge. An atmosphere of uncertainty hovers over Greece: a struggle between past and future with a nation’s identity at stake. With Brexit looming will the Greek drama foreshadow new cracks in the EU?
