Abstract
Ganhwaseon and Psychotherapy : Focusing on Current Research Trend
Lee, Pilwon
Dongguk University(Gyeongju)
Today, we are faced with a variety of problems. Themost severe one might be the psychological unhealthiness.Diseases due to stress and negative emotions such as anxi-ety, depression and anger affect not only the individualslife, but also people around including family members, whicheventually develop into a social problem.
In this social atmosphere, practice or meditation be-gan to receive unprecedented amount of social interest. Notonly Vipassan which is the traditional southern practicemethod, but also popularized programs such as MBSR orMBCT that applied Vipassan are currently contributing tosolving diverse psychological problems of modern people.
Meanwhile, a unique practice method calledGanhwaseon has been early developed in Northeast Asia tobe succeeded to this day. Recently, research on Ganhwaseonfrom an aspect of psychotherapy is budding in Korea. However, quantitative research on Ganhwaseon() isnot yet comparable to other practice method such asVipassan.
This paper examines the previous studies that con-templated on the psychotherapeutic effectiveness and char-acteristics of Ganhwaseon and confirmed the inherence ofsuch characteristics in the tradition of Ganhwaseon. For thispurpose, research papers related to Ganhwaseon that were
-
220 44
ever published in Korea before February in 2015 weresearched, which gave out a list of 333 papers. However, there were only six papers that involved psychotherapy.Among these six, only three were the papers that verifiedthe psychotherapeutic effectiveness using psychologicalmethod.
Meanwhile, there are very few papers regarding thepsychotherapeutic effectiveness of Ganhwaseon in overseasas well. Ever since Doctor Jon Kabat-Zinn developed MBSRprogram in 1979, the psychotherapeutic effects of Buddhistcontemplation has been proceeded merely focused on thepractice in southern Vipassan.
The reason that there are scarce domestic researcheson Ganhwaseon from an aspect of psychotherapy can be at-tributed to the inherent limits of Ganhwaseon. The biggestchallenge of Ganhwaseon is that practice is impossible un-less there is a teacher who had precisely cleared Hwadu. Moreover, Ganhwaseon requires a one-on-one approach forsolving Hwadu() and checking between teacher andpupil. In that sense, there are several limitations forGanhwaseon to become a public program.
Nevertheless, Ganhwaseon has outstanding psychother-apeutic effects that stand comparison to any otherperformances. This can be confirmed in the literature reviewon the previous domestic studies.
If we properly give life to the characteristics ofGanhwaseon and broaden a new level of understanding froma psychological aspect, Ganhwaseon can be reborn as apsychotherapeutic method that possesses a very significantmeaning to us in these days.
