The Holidays are right around the corner. Here are ideas for handling the Big Meal.

These ideas are brought to you by The American Association of Diabetes Educators

• Eat breakfast or snacks earlier in the day and avoid the idea of ‘saving carbs’ for the big feast later. If you skip meals it may be harder to manage your blood sugar. • Limit the number of servings of starchy foods on your plate. It might be tempting to have some mashed potatoes, sweet potato

casserole and rolls, however, try to choose just one of these items or take a bite or two of each. • Choose vegetables and fruits served raw, grilled or steamed. Avoid vegetables in creams, gravies and butter. • Stick to calorie-free drinks such as water, tea, seltzer or diet sodas instead of punch or mixed drinks. • If you choose to drink alcohol, limit the amount and have it with food. Talk with your healthcare team about

whether alcohol is safe for you. Women should drink no more than one alcoholic beverage a day and men no more than two. A drink is: 12 oz. beer, 5 oz. wine, 1 ½ oz. 80-proof distilled spirts or 1 oz. of 100-proof.

• Enjoy your favorite holiday treats but take small portions, eat slowly and savor the taste and texture. • After the meal, take a walk with family and friends. Exercise will get you moving, keep you focused on your goals, and give you

a welcome break from being surrounded by treats. Exercise is also a great way to lower blood sugar or prevent blood sugar rise. • If you overindulge, don’t beat yourself up. If you eat more carbs or food than you planned, don’t think you have

failed, just make a plan to get back on track.

Are You Hosting a Dinner? • Make sure the menu includes healthy food choices such as vegetables, fruit and lean meat. • Baking, broiling and barbequing are good methods for cooking meats such as turkey. Avoid frying or adding extra fat during cooking. • When you’re cooking, avoid sampling the foods more than necessary. These calories add up and can affect your

blood sugar. • If you’re the host of the dinner, clear the table and put unused food away to help guests (and you) avoid grazing. Are You a Guest at a Family Member’s or Friend’s House? • Offer to bring along a healthy dish that you know you will enjoy and can substitute for a not so healthy option.

Are you ready for some football?Even if you are not a Husker fan, you know the season is upon us. With football comes tailgating, so how do you go about making healthy choices to serve or enjoy at said events? From the American Association of Diabetes Educators come these ideas for a Healthy Eating Game Plan:

1. Don’t play on an empty stomach. Eat a small, balanced meal or snack before you leave home for the game. If you arrive at a party hungry, you’ll be more likely to overindulge. 2. Examine the playing field. Study ALL the selections, and think about what you are going to have before you put ANYTHING on your plate. - If you taste something that you don’t enjoy, leave it on your plate-DON’T FINISH IT!! 3. Focus on the fundamentals. - Choose raw vegetables first. Broccoli, baby carrots, cauliflower and tomatoes are good choices that are usually on the buffet table. Take only a small spoonful of dip or skip it entirely. - Choose lean proteins that are not breaded or fried. Select chicken, veggie or turkey burgers. - Take only a small portion of cheese (calories and saturated fat). - Eat chips and crackers in moderation. Don’t eat them straight from the bag. Put some on a small plate and don’t

load them down with creamy dips (choose salsa). - If you want to eat a high-fat or high-calorie item, like wings, pizza or nachos, take a small portion. Put it on your plate last, after you’ve filled up the space with veggies. - Try not to hang out near the food to avoid grazing. 4. Stay hydrated. Stick to calorie-free drinks so that you can eat your calories instead of drinking them. Drink only moderate amounts of alcohol (2 drinks for men, 1 for women). 5. Go for the extra point. Take a walk or do other activity to help reduce the blood sugar rise.

SECURITEE BLANKET ...........................................................................................................................................................$9.99There are many products on the market that offer some protection when transporting your insulin vial. Unfortunately, once you remove the vial from the case, you lose that protection. Not everyone who holds a vial drops it, but it does happen. If it falls, seeing the clear glass on the floor may be difficult. If it breaks, it must be replaced. Securitee Blanket vial protector makes your vial more visible and helps protect it from possible breakage.

INSULIN PUMP SPIBELT...................................................................................................................................$15.95 - $21.95SPIbelt is the perfect product because it is comfortable enough for daily wear and was designed to carry medical supplies such as your insulin pump or meter. The pocket expands to 6” x 3” x 2” and fits waist sizes of 25”-50” to accommodate essential supplies. SPIbelt is available in a variety of colors and comes in child and adult sizes.

Embrace challenges as a dear friend.” No doubt walking through life with a loved one with diabetes can present challenges and trials that we may not have anticipated. To Whom It May Concern:

It has been my pleasure to work with Diabetes Education Center of the Midlands for many years. They have a very stable and highly motivated staff. They are very easy to work with when I have specific questions or concerns. In the past I have referred patients to hospitals for diabetes education. There was frequently staff turnover and the quality of the care was extremely variable. However, my patients routinely get excellent care and advice at DECM. Patients can receive both group and individualized diabetes instruction. My patients routinely report high satisfaction with their DECM experience.

I have been especially impressed by their emphasis on not just treating diabetes, but prevention of diabetes. They have an excellent pre-diabetes education program that I have found very motivating and effective.

Sincerely,Gilbert Head M.D.

Featured PatientsJim & Mary King

When Mary King was first diagnosed with diabetes seven years ago, she wasn’t given very much information. She was told to eat smaller portions and take her blood sugar, but not the importance of these habits. When Mary’s new physician realized how little she really knew about the disease, she suggested Mary attend the Diabetes Education Center of the Midlands Comprehensive Diabetes class. Mary asked her doctor if it was possible for her husband Jim to attend the class with her. Jim had been diagnosed with prediabetes in the past year. “I knew if he went it would help both of us, and we can work together on reversing the effects of this disease,” Mary explained. The couple couldn’t believe how much they learned. Jim thought the medical explanations of the complications that may come along with diabetes, as well as how diabetes medications actually work in the body were particularly interesting. Mary now knows the importance of taking and charting her blood sugars to ensure they don’t get too high, and both learned a lot about having a healthy diet. “We eat a lot differently now,” Jim says, “It’s probably the hardest part.” Both Jim and Mary say the team effort helps them stay on track. “When one of us has a weak moment, the other will say ‘well we really shouldn’t’ or ‘okay, but only in a smaller portion’,” Mary says. Their hard work has certainly paid off, as not even two months after attending the comprehensive class Mary has lost ten pounds and Jim has lost twenty, and both say they certainly feel better thanks to the knowledge they’ve gained. “We both enjoyed learning about diabetes and I honestly would recommend the class to everyone,” expresses Mary. Great job to Mary and Jim!
