Lesson Title: Native American Art: Spirit AnimalsGrade Level: 2nd and 1st grade

when painting, drawing and constructing.

manipulation, eye-hand coordination, building and imagination.
27.B.1Know how images, sounds and movement convey stories about people, places and times.
Objectives: Conceptual: Given artwork examples and a discussion, students will learning the role of spirit animals in Native American cultures.Conceptual: Given a guided discussion, students will reflect on times that others help.Skill: Given a demonstration and tools, students will practice fine motor and artistic skills with chalk pastels.
Assessment Questions and Criteria: Rubric or other assessment tools should be attached after the lesson plan.Students will be able to verbally explain the general role of spirit guides.Students will be able to describe clearly a time that they were offered guidance or support.Students will be able to draw a representation of an animal and scene they choose.

Art Materials Necessary for the Lesson:
Colored PaperColored PencilsChalk/ Soft Pastels
Teacher Activities Student ActivitiesPreparation (5-10 minutes):Set up art supplies
Materials are sorted into 2 work stations (red and blue) with 1 bin of pastels and 1 bin of colored paper
Set up visual examples only visual references examples not demo

Introduction (5 minutes):Introduce myselfAsk students names
Ask students what they know about native Americans
Development(15 min instruction + 25 min work time):
Discuss Native American Culture (3 min) show art reference: woman with horses
Students say their name and favourite animal
Students answer questions:[artwork]
Where is this taking place? What types of things are at places like
these? (guide answers to trees, rocks, flowers, streams, and animals)
Discuss Spirit animals (10 min) show art references: Animals
show art references: Paints
show art references: booksLynx baby clothingobjects for ceremonies
Ideal Generation (3 minutes)Make a list of animals with students
Make a list of things we like about people or pets or animals
(WORK TIME)
Introduce Project (2 minutes)Explain project conceptExplain how to do project
Demonstrate Materials (5 minutes or less) Colored paper with colored pencils
Pass out materials and organize groups (2 minutes)
Begin work time Assist students as needed
If students finish drawing early: Demo pastels and pass out practice paper
to students that are ready WARNING: Hands and table will be very
messy. Caution not to touch clothing, face or rest arms on tables. Color will wash off.
Discuss symbols and multiple meanings
Students answer questions:[artwork]
What types of animals are there? How do you think this person feels? (happy,
sad, angry, clam)
Students answer questions:[animal artwork]
Does the guide seems nice, mean, funny, scary, friendly, silly?
What does their guide (Yek) help them with? (to be brave, peaceful, ect)
Students gather around demonstration area*show examples (include process examples and Hopi poster)
Students collect 1 piece of paper and are assigned a group (red or blue)
Students work in area next to their group's material bin
Give 2 minute warning to stop working
Conclusion (5 minutes):Collect students projects
comment on what each student did well as they turn in their work
Ask students to put away supplies point out what each group did well
Inform students on what we will be doing during the next session.
Thank students for their cooperation and good work.
