Jacob inherited a bad marriage model (infighting, deception, favoritism) Jacob and His Wives Genesis Chapters 29-30 17 There was no sparkle in Leah’s eyes, but Rachel had a beautiful figure and a lovely face. 21 “Now give me my wife so I can sleep with her.” 30 So Jacob slept with Rachel, too, and he loved her much more than Leah. 32 “Now my husband will love me.” 30:1 She became jealous of her sister. She pleaded with Jacob, “Give me children, or I’ll die!” Then Jacob became furious with Rachel. 16 Leah went out to meet him. “You must come and sleep with me tonight!” 4 wives, 12 sons, 1 daughter = 1 messy family Biblical marriages are not perfect marriages. The dysfunction in Jacob, his wives, and ourselves drives us to seek Jesus’ advice. Jesus= Bridegroom Ephesians 5:31–32 As the Scriptures say, “A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.” This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one. Romans 5:8 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. You are loved perfectly with your imperfections. Bottom Line: Don’t strive for a perfect marriage; strive to love perfectly in marriage. QUESTIONS TO ASK When you hear “Biblical Marriage” what comes to mind? For you, what does it mean to hear that no marriage/relationship is perfect? How does knowing “you are loved perfectly with your imperfections” influence your marriage/relationships? What does “strive to love perfectly” mean in your marriage/life? Be specific.
