Taking better care of yourself is not merely a matter of good health. Some people take better care of their car than they do of their body. Most people, in fact, pay little attention to their body until something goes wrong.

“Experience the abundance of health that you have dreamt about. Enjoy greater vitality than you thought possible and feel happier than you can remember.”

1 Stress: Why Me?

When I first decided to write this book, I immediately

thought, “Sure, you can eliminate stress and anxiety by locking

yourself in a room and never talking to anyone ever again.” But that

wouldn’t make a very informative book, now would it? And it

definitely wouldn’t make for a fulfilling life.

Stress is a part of daily life. It’s how we react to it that makes all the difference in maintaining

our health and well-being. It is a feeling created when reacting to a particular event. It is the

way the body rises to challenges and prepares to meet tough circumstances with strength,

stamina, focus, and heightened alertness.

There are events that provoke stress; these events are known as stressors, which cover a whole

range of situations. The nervous system and some specific hormones (Adrenaline and Cortisol)

get activated due to the human body response to these stressors.

Symptoms of stress include sleep problems, poor concentration, relationship issues, hormonal

imbalances, apathy, and work mistakes, among many others.

Stress is Not Just About YOU!!

Your Stress Affects Everyone Around You!!

2 Stress: No Weigh to Live

You have most likely heard that you are what you eat. This is true when it comes to controlling your stress. A good many people who are stressed feel this way because of the diet that they consume. If you are eating foods laden with fat, sugar and other non nutritious substances, stop

and start eating healthier. You may notice a change in your mood just by eating the right foods.

One of the problems that many people today face is that they do not eat healthy foods. They tend to eat foods that are high in sugars and fats. While sugar will give you a mood boost, it offers no nutritional value whatsoever and hangs around to become fat. You are better off to eat a diet that is filled with vitamins and nutrients, especially the B Vitamins.

Everything regenerates, given the proper nutrition.

The first thing that you should do when you are trying to come up with a diet to help you with stress is to get rid of the simple carbohydrates i.e. high Glycemic Index (GI). These do not offer you proper nutrients and are considered wasted calories. Sure, it is okay to eat a lollie, chocolate or cake once in a while, but not all of the time. These will only end up sticking around in all the wrong places and rob your body of the really needed nutrients.

The B Vitamins are a family of vitamins that are good for you in many different ways, especially when you are watching your mental health. Vitamin B is one of the best vitamins that you can take when you are trying to stave off stress. This vitamin is found in a variety of different vegetables. Zinc and potassium are other nutrients that many people who suffer from depression are lacking.

Page 9: © Mick Jordan. All rights reserved. | | … · 2017-09-19 · Scientific Naturopath and Wellness Coach B.Sc, RMT, ND SMA, AAMT, ATMS, ANPA and ASADA accredited Taking better care

The other issue with eating junk food all of the time, like fast food, is that you are bound to start feeling bad about yourself. These foods contain fats and processed chemicals that are just not good for you. If you start staying away from processed foods and eating foods that are good for you, such as fish, vegetables, fruits and whole grains, your body will react in same. Start treating your body well by providing it with the right fuel and you will get a healthy body - as well as a healthy mind, in return.

Stress initiates a complex web of hormonal influences that may prompt the body to hang on to fat and lead to weight gain. When you are under stress, the “fight or flight” response is triggered in our bodies leading to the release of stress hormones, in particular Adrenaline and Cortisol.

Whether you are stressed because of constant demands at work or you are really in danger, your body responds like you are about to be harmed and need to fight for your life (fight or flight). Too much Cortisol can slow your metabolism, causing more weight gain than you would normally experience.

Cortisol will also increase your abdominal fat, switch off fat burning, increase your bad cholesterol (LDL), increase your sugar cravings, impair your cognitive function (memory, clarity, mental accuracy), affect hormones (Progesterone, Oestrogen, Testosterone etc), disrupt glandular function (sexual organs, thyroid etc) and if you remain in this state for a prolonged period of time due to chronic stress, your health seriously becomes at risk.

Take challenges as opportunities and stress as a temporary thing that seeming to be a normal reaction to our everyday activities and not disasters. Learn to solve problems by carrying the right people along rather than complaining and letting stress have its way.

Create time for relaxation, be optimistic, believe in yourself and let stress, no matter how little it may be, motivate you into positive means of reaching your goals.

Here are some general approaches which may help your stress reduction plan:

Acquire more sleep: - Weight is partly gained if your quality of sleep is too poor or not enough because sleep affects our glucose metabolism and a sleep deprived body craves carbs/sweets/sugars for fast energy.

Examine and observe your priorities.

Stay away from refined sugars as they will “spike” you blood sugar levels too quickly resulting in fluctuating energy levels. Excess sugar can also result in weight gain.

Take a powdered magnesium supplement as it has much higher utilisation and absorption that the tablet form. Magnesium will help relax the nervous system, stabilise blood sugars, improve sleep, hydrate cells and is beneficial for your heart.

Increase your intake omega3 fats. Essential fatty acids are made up of 2 components called EPA & DHA. EPA works on every cell in your body and the DHA works on brain function i.e. memory, cognitive function.

How stress affects your relationships?

Stress is something that frequently makes couples go through periods of change and emotion. This can bring about challenges to a relationship. Since it cannot be avoided, it is then recommended that one should be able to recognise and manage it.

People often experience periods of change, everyday hassles and emotional issues that cause stress in their relationships. We all have stress in our lives, whether it is job related, financial, marital, or parental. It can cause uncomfortable mental and physical reactions to life’s events. This challenges your relationships.

It is important to understand how stressful events affect your relationship. Finding a way to have a conversation about what is causing you stress, where you both finish the talk feeling relieved and satisfied, can make your relationship stronger.

Take the time to find out what the problem is and then share it with your spouse. Your partner may be able to help you deal with your stress. With increased awareness of what you are worried about he/she can find ways to keep from adding to your stress. Bear in mind that your partner may not think that you have any reason to be stressed. Help him/her to understand why you are stressed. Respect each other’s values and find ways to work together on the challenges. Your partner can give you a different point of view and together you can find ways to solve the issue that is causing your stress.

Page 12: © Mick Jordan. All rights reserved. | | … · 2017-09-19 · Scientific Naturopath and Wellness Coach B.Sc, RMT, ND SMA, AAMT, ATMS, ANPA and ASADA accredited Taking better care

Identify a way to discuss what brings about stress, by so doing you can help your relationship grow stronger. The following are some tips on how you can handle stress in a relationship:

Try to figure out what is getting you worried: - Instead of complaining about being stressed out, take some time to find out what exactly the problem is and then share it with your partner and never try fighting it all alone. By so doing, he/she will find a way to avoid adding to your stress.

Always stay connected: - Strengthen up your relationship by confiding in one another because turning away from your spouse at a stressful period, which can lead to feelings of rejection, can be the most dangerous and damaging behaviour in a relationship. Staying silent and not getting connected can lead to greater frustration and anger which may or can cause separations.

Manage and maintain Intimacy: - Being intimate with your spouse means that you disclose your feelings and thoughts, affection and mutually work to solve problems and challenges.

Do You Ever Get Tired of Sleeping?

It’s only natural for us to feel fatigued if we experience something that is physically, mentally and emotionally stressful. The body’s response to stress is to release hormones that help us deal with stress. These hormones can give us extra speed and strength, but in some cases, they have been shown to affect sleep negatively by resulting in what is referred to as insomnia.

“Sleep is a luxury, which I can’t afford.” ― Robin Sikarwar

A good night's sleep allows you to tackle the day's stress easier. When you are tired, you are less patient and easily agitated which can increase stress. Most adults need 7-8 hours of sleep per night. Practicing good sleep hygiene along with stress-lowering tactics can help improve your quality of sleep:

Page 14: © Mick Jordan. All rights reserved. | | … · 2017-09-19 · Scientific Naturopath and Wellness Coach B.Sc, RMT, ND SMA, AAMT, ATMS, ANPA and ASADA accredited Taking better care

© Mick Jordan. All rights reserved. | www.inneressence.com.au | page 14

In order to train your mind how to let go of the stress, it is important to practice this daily as you can learn to release all stress within minutes of starting the exercise. Your daily practice should take place before going to bed, as that will enable you to sleep more soundly.

Make sure your bedroom is a good environment for sleep. Your bedroom should be dark, a pleasant temperature, clean & tidy and a peaceful place dedicated only to sleeping.

Take a warm shower or bath before you sleep. There are many aromatherapy type soaps available that can be a further aid to relaxation.

Make sure that you stop doing mentally demanding work several hours before going to bed – give your brain time to calm down before you try to sleep.

Keep the same bedtime. Let your body and mind get used to a predictable routine.

5 Do a Digital Detox

Mobile phones, internet, iPods , XBOX, Playstation, Facebook, Twitter, email - we are always on the go and always reachable. Don’t watch the parades on a screen. Get outside and join in the fun.

Many of us spend a vast percentage of our day connected to the internet or texting on our mobile phones; however this can cause us to miss out on many

everyday sources of pleasure, such as conversations with the people around us. To help cut stress and make time for more worthwhile activities, try to have a Digital Detox.

We don’t make time to relax and enjoy life any more. Why not? We certainly should!

Spend a week, day or afternoon without any technology and live in the real world instead. Listen to the birds singing rather than your iPod, take in the view rather than tapping away at your phone, and call someone for a conversation rather than sending an email. When you get back to your computer or phone, you will notice that the world didn’t stop because you turned it off for a while, and there was probably nothing to stress about after all.

“Happiness is part of who we are. Joy is the feeling”

― Tony DeLiso, Legacy: The Power Within

My challenge to you this week is to turn off your device and try and concentrate

fully on something else.

It could be a long awaited chat with your mum.

Or that hot, foamy bath you haven’t had in ages to help wash your stress away

Or that new book you’ve been meaning to read.

6 Deadlines, Demands, & Happiness

We feel pressure to do these things because we think we HAVE to, not because we WANT to. All too often, it’s difficult for people to just say no. Not saying that one little word piles up un-needed expectations and obligations that make us feel anxious.

All of us will experience situations that may cause us to become stressed or feel anxious. The reasons are too many to note but can include, buying a property, having guests stay over (in-laws!), being bullied, exams, looking after children, managing finances, relationship issues, travelling, etc.

Just say NO!

One huge problem people who are overly stressed out have is the ability to say no when they need to. Perhaps your best friend asks if you wouldn’t mind babysitting her kids when you’ve already made plans with yourself to get a haircut.

There’s no reason why you have to say yes to everyone. In fact, there are often many times when you should turn them down. If you find yourself agreeing to do things when you really don’t want to, you’re a people pleaser. In general, this isn’t a bad trait to have, but it can be a huge stressor.

Page 18: © Mick Jordan. All rights reserved. | | … · 2017-09-19 · Scientific Naturopath and Wellness Coach B.Sc, RMT, ND SMA, AAMT, ATMS, ANPA and ASADA accredited Taking better care

Constantly trying to please other people is draining, and many people pleasers feel anxious, worried, unhappy, and tired a lot of the time.

Stress is an ignorant state. It believes that everything is an emergency. Natlaie Goldberg "Wild Mind"

Stop saying YES all the time. Try to pause or take a breath before responding to

someone’s request. You may want to answer requests with "I need to think

about it first, I’ll get back to you" or "Let me check my schedule and call you

back".

Use any phrase that you feel comfortable with that gives you time before you

automatically respond with YES.

Examine and observe your priorities

7 Stress-free family

Even children can feel the pressure of stress and anxiety. Teenagers studying VCE, who want to go to University, find they are pushing themselves during their studies to try and obtain scholarships so they can attend schools that have ever increasing tuition costs.

They also find themselves having to hold down part-time jobs to earn money for extras that their parents can no longer afford. Add peer pressure into the mix and you have a veritable pressure cooker! It could also be a parent wanting to apply for that promotion or even worse, them losing their job.

From Chaos to Calm

Page 20: © Mick Jordan. All rights reserved. | | … · 2017-09-19 · Scientific Naturopath and Wellness Coach B.Sc, RMT, ND SMA, AAMT, ATMS, ANPA and ASADA accredited Taking better care

You know the type. These families are constantly on the go—and frequently on the brink of an argument or meltdown. Whether it’s dirty socks on the floor, an exhausting day at work or that empty toilet paper roll (again!), these can become sources of stress that build into real discontent. It is important to remember as you rush around trying to create the perfect life for yourself, your family are watching. If you turn it into a stressful production, that is how your family/children will view it as well.

So often, we know inside ourselves that we need a break. That break might be

a full-fledged vacation or a weekend getaway. Either way, getting out of the

daily grind can be amazingly liberating and a huge way to get rid of stress and

anxiety.

Wash your stress away with a hot, foamy bath.

Figure out what gives you pleasure. For example, you may like reading

magazines, watching videos, going to a park, or listening to music. Give

yourself permission to do those things and then enjoy them.

Check in with how you feel and what you are thinking. It’s important to be

aware of these things; they’re part of who you are.

Final Words: Stress less and live longer

If stress is caused by us not feeling in control of a situation, the answer is to try and reverse this, and regain that control. The good news is: YOU CAN!

What are you waiting for? It's time to get serious about your health!

Stress is a normal part of life and in small quantities, stress is good. It can motivate you and help you be more productive. However, too much stress or a strong response to stress is harmful. It can set you up for general poor health as well as specific physical or psychological illnesses like infection, heart disease, or depression. Persistent and unrelenting stress often leads to anxiety and unhealthy behaviors like overeating and abuse of alcohol or drugs.

Just like causes of stress differ from person to person, what relieves stress is not the same for everyone. In general, however, making certain lifestyle changes as well as finding healthy, enjoyable ways to cope with stress helps most people. I hope that I’ve given you some great ways of dealing with the stress that we all feel!
