11th HavanaArt BiennialEvery two years, Havana swarms with activity with the attendance not only of artists, but critics, curators, dealers, collectors, and art lovers in general during the Havana Art Biennial. A wide-ranging presentationtakes over all the city’s principal galleries and spills out into numerous public arenas. The 2012 Biennial willfocus on the different meanings of large public spaces with exhibitions, installations and performances inplazas and streets in Havana, especially in the Historic Center. This is by far the most important meetingplace for artists from Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, Asia and the Middle East with the gradualincorporation over the years of European, US and Japanese artists. La duodécima noche o Noche de reyes
William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, in whichthe comical side of love is illustrated by themisadventures of two pairs of romantic lovers,in a version by the always unconventional anddaring Teatro El Público theatre company, continues playing to packed houses.
Aire frío
Argos Teatro presents a key play by VirgilioPiñera, considered the most important Cubanplaywright of the 20th century, in which all theconflicts posed in the original play are revisitedand placed in the context of contemporaryCuban society.
Nevada
The critic and playwright Lilian Suzel Zaldívarhas said that ‘Nevada,’ by the young Cubanplaywright Abel González Melo, "delves intothe micro world–which is not so small after all--of the Havana that annuls terms such as virtueand morality.” Rosnay, who is a pimp, amongother things, dreams about visiting Nevadaand drags his “girlfriend” Lucia with him.Nevada is not precisely Lucia’s goal, but shedoesn’t want to lose Rosnay and decides toembark on an illegal journey. This is thebeginning of this play, which gets complicated in unsuspected ways, and whose charactersare men and women of a troubled and thornyhere and now.
