Message from the Dean
Dr. S. S. Iqbal
Dean/Faculty of Natural Sciences
Welcome to the Bachelor of Science Degree Programme offered by theFaculty of Natural Sciences, the Open University of Sri Lanka. We are the
only single mode distance teaching university to obtain the skills and
qualifications required to succeed in a competitive environment.
The Faculty of Natural Sciences has over 30 years experience in delivering
a wide range of quality distance learning programmes in varying disciplines
of science, as part of a qualification or on a stand-alone basis. Whetheryou want to develop your career or study for personal enrichment, you
can choose from a wide range of programmes at both undergraduate and
postgraduate level, ranging from certificates and diplomas to full degrees.Foundation courses in Science provide an avenue for students to complete
the entry requirements for Degree Programmes.
Degrees awarded by the OUSL are equally recognized as those awardedto students studying face to face at other Sri Lankan national Universities.
The courses on offer are suited to all those who desire to obtain up-to-date
knowledge skills, and insights in the various disciplines of science. Ourprogrammes however, are unique in that they are specially designed for
people who – either due to career, financial, or family commitments –
cannot, or do not wish to, engage in study full-time.
During the past three decades we have educated thousands of individuals
throughout the country, using a multimedia study package of print, audio
visual aids, CD ROMs, and online material. With us you can study on yourown time and pace, at an affordable price. Our learner support systems
will assist you at every stage of your academic career. You will be ably
guided by a team of highly qualified staff to develop into successful distancelearners who possess the required skills and knowledge to excel in the
world of work.
Going to University can be a big step for any new student, young or old.Being a distance learner can be an added challenge initially, especially if
you have not studied for some time or have not studied by distance learning.
You will need to be self-motivated and enjoy working independently tosuccessfully meet the challenges of studying in the distance mode. This
Undergraduate Handbook is designed to be as comprehensive as possible
to help you settle in the chosen programme and the Open University of SriLanka. It describes essential information for new students of Degree
Programmes.
Thank you for your interest in the B.Sc Degree Programme offered by theFaculty of Natural Sciences. The Faculty is committed to provide you quality
higher education and an inspiring learning experience- one that will ultimately
give a real sense of achievement for you.
On behalf of the Faculty, I wish you good luck and every success in your
studies.

The Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) is the premier national
University in the country which offers Degree, Diploma,
Certificate Programmes and other courses through OPEN &
DISTANCE LEARNING methodology. Established in 1980, under
the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978 and OUSL Ordinance No. 1
of 1990, it has the same legal and academic status as any
other national university in Sri Lanka.
The OUSL provides opportunities for any person over 18 years
of age to register as a student for a Programme/Course of
their choice.
Due to the nature of its teaching methodology and
infrastructure, The OUSL is able to serve a large student
population scattered throughout the island. Currently, over
30,000 are registered in its four Faculties: Natural Sciences,
Engineering Technology, Humanities & Social Sciences and
Education. The University serves its student population via a
network of 6 regional centres and 18 study centres (Table 6).
The Central campus and the Colombo Regional Centre (CRC)
are situated in Nawala. The other five regional centres are
situated at Kandy(KRC), Matara(MRC), Jaffna(JRC),
Anuradhapura (ARC) and Batticaloa (BRC).
Faculty of Natural Sciences
The Faculty of Natural Sciences conducts a variety of study
programmes including the Degree Programmes leading to B.Sc
and B.Sc (Nursing), B. Pharm, B.MLS several Diploma/
Certificate programmes.
The Faculty functions under the leadership of the Dean who is
the administrative and the academic Head. It also has a large
number of experienced and qualified teaching staff to help the
students in their studies. The six academic departments of
the Faculty are: Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics & Computer
Science, Physics, Zoology and Health Sciences.

Support for Learning
At the OUSL, students are supported in many ways as
described below.
Counselling
At the time of registration, you will be assigned an academic
staff member as a personal counsellor from whom you may
get advice and guidance on selecting courses and other
academic matters. The Faculty has two other student
counsellors to help you overcome any general problems.
The Study System
The study system of the OUSL is based on distance learning
methods. It is different to the conventional study system most
of you are familiar with. Regular attendance at the University
is not required and is therefore well suited for those of you
who are employed or engaged with other commitments.
Student learning is facilitated through carefully prepared
printed course material suitable for self learning. Printed course
material is supplemented with audio visual and online learning
material. Your progress in courses is evaluated at different
time intervals using a variety of assessment methods such as
assignment tests and final examinations.
Courses, academic value and time to study
Faculty of Natural Sciences offers courses at different Levels.
Degree level courses are at Level 3, 4, 5 & 6.
Level 3 courses are offered in Sinhala, English & Tamil and
higher level courses are offered only in the English Medium.
Each course is identified by a course code. A course code will
reflect the level of study and the academic value of the course
referred to as the credit rating. The time you will have to allocate
for studying a course depends on its credit rating. The minimum
credit rating for courses offered by the Science Faculty is 3
credits; such a course will require a minimum allocation of
around 75 hours of study time.
6
Day Schools
Day schools are interactive sessions where you are given an
opportunity to meet the academic staff coordinating the course
(your course teachers) and discuss problems you may come
across in studying your course material. In addition to day
schools, we provide face-to-face support through workshops,
tutorial sessions and practical classes.
Supplementary Online Support for Courses
In order to give you additional help and also to get you
familiarized with modern learning trends and tools, certain
courses in the degree programme are supplemented with an
online component. Once you register for a course with an
online component, you will be informed and advised on how
to access and use it.
Laboratory Facilities
Library Facilities
Laboratory facilities are available at the Colombo, Kandy and
Matara Regional Centres, where you have the opportunity to
engage in practical work. Depending on the resources
available some departments may conduct a few practicalsessions at Jaffna Regional Centre and Anuradhapura Regional
Centre (ARC) Computer Laboratory facilities with internet
access, are available at all Regional Centres and at many
study centres.
OUSL library network consists of the main library located at
the central campus and regional libraries at other regional
centres. Libraries have a latest collection of books for reference
& lending purposes as well as access to past examination
papers. Libraries also provide facilities to view CDs/DVDs and
videos relevant to your study programme. You have free
internet access including access to valuable e-learning
resources.
Duty leave for Government teachersIf you are a Government teacher following the B.Sc. Degree at
OUSL, you are entitled for 20 days of study leave per year to
participate in academic activities (Ref. letter dated 12.08.94
issued by the Secretary to the Ministry of Education).
