Purim - "Don’t Worry. Be Happy" As the snow begins to melt and Purim is upon us, we cannot help but feel a little bit of “spring” in our step. Beginning this evening, thousands of Jews around the world will dress up in costume, forget about their worries, come to synagogue and celebrate one of the most joyous holidays that is a part of our tradition, Purim! Over the years Purim has become synonymous with happiness. It is really a time for us to let down our guard and rejoice in the freedom and equality we share as human beings living in our modern world. Purim is a story about heroes and loyalty. It teaches us to stand up for who we are and what we believe in. And most importantly, Purim reminds us to be happy. We are taught that there are four mitzvot that we should strive to perform on Purim. They are in no particular order: 1) Mishloach Manot-exchanging reciprocal gifts of food and other delicacies, 2) Mattanot la-evyonim - donating charity to the poor, 3) Seudat Purim - eating a celebratory meal and 4) Kriat Hamegillah - public recitation of the Scroll of Esther. We are reminded that as we carry out the mitzvot of Purim, we should carry with us a sense of joy. Based on the winter we have all endured over the past few months, carrying a smile and being grateful for what we have is not an easy thing to do. Yet, observing the mitzvot of Purim forces us to be appreciative and satisfied with our portion in life.As part of our morning liturgy, we recite the words "Ashreinu ma tov chelkeinu, u'mah naim goraleinu, u'mah yafah yerushatienu" (Happy are we with the goodly portion that has been given to us and how pleasant is our lot and the traditions we have been given.) Being Jewish is not always easy. As Jews, it seems as if it is a part of our DNA to struggle, to ask questions and to wrestle with the challenges that life presents to us. Living a Jewish life takes thought and commitment and often makes us ask ourselves the difficult questions that sometimes we'd prefer not to deal with.

Purim provides us with the fuel, that internal caffeine boost, that helps us to appreciate life's greatest pleasures. It is difficult to be sad on Purim and at the same time it is difficult not to celebrate this joyous holiday. As we know, the name, Purim, means "lot”, referring to the lottery that Haman implemented to pick the date on which he planned to abolish the Jewish people. Purim reminds us that whatever "lot" we have been dealt, we have the ability to appreciate the blessings in our life and remember that happier times always lie ahead. May we all celebrate Purim with passion and joy and may we come to appreciate all that is sacred and wonderful in our lives. Wishing you a Shabbat Shalom and Chag Purim Sameach! Cantor David Rosen
