太陽輻射能太陽能即地球接收自太陽之輻射能。地球與大氣圈不斷地自太陽獲得 0.17×1018W 之輻射量,數量實在大得難以想像。假設每人平均需要 103W ,則一百億人才不過是需要 1013W ,因此只要將抵達地表太陽能的百分之一轉換成可用的能量,則滿足全球能源需求已是綽綽有餘。
太陽常數
地球除自轉外,並以橢圓形之軌道繞行太陽。光或熱之強度與距離平方成反比,故太陽對地表之輻射量亦非常數。一般所謂之太陽常數,係指當地球位於太陽與地球之平均距離,在地球大氣外圍垂直太陽輻射能之單位面積上於單位時間內所通過之太陽輻射量。目前,公認之太陽常數為 1353 瓦/平方米。
