Ancient Kaifeng shul

The Kaifeng shul was destroyed by the flooding of the Yellow River in the 1800’s.

This is all that remains of the last Kaifeng synagogue: the synagogue well, now in a public hospital.

The flood brought an end to the "golden age" of the Jewish settlement of China. By the time of the flood, the Jewish population of China had reached about 5,000, mostly in Kaifeng.
