In the mass consumption society, the people's needs are becoming more and more diversified. How can we provide these customers with a variety of products efficiently and timely? This is logistics, a major theme for most companies. In 1962 the Logistics & Automation Division (called Distribution Systems Division at that time) started to produce tool cabinets for various tools & mate-rials in the plant. This storage system using cabinets has been expanded to the multi-storied automated storage system. We combined multi-storied automated storage system with unmanned transport systems resulting in the consecutive creation of automated production processes to contribute to the prosperity of manufacturers. As logistics is now the most important theme for every company, Muratec is providing a wide variety of logistics and factory automation systems including hardware, software and engineering in the field of mail order, medical supplies, food, publication, apparel and transport .Muratec proposes comprehensive solutions to the customers' need.

Machine Tools Division

CNC Laser Punch Press

Metalworking technologies supporting a wide variety of sheet metal industry all over the worldThe roots of the sheet metal machinery department can be traced back to 1970, when we joined up with the Wiedemann Division of The Warner & Swasey Company; which was established in Philadelphia, USA in 1916, and released the world’s first CNC turret punch press. After that, we have pursued product development and released new products one after another, including plasma ark combined machines and laser combined machines, and also construction of large-scale flexible manufacturing systems. (Wiedemann still exists today as Murata Machinery USA.) Sheet-metal-processed products realize value by going through many subsequent processes of not only punch-ing, bending and other machining, but also welding and assembly. Efficient creation of this value requires a manufacturing perspective with all processes taken into consideration. We develop processing machines and systems based on such a perspective, and also offer recommendations for total optimization of machining processes, including reviews of processes and methods, while sharing customer concerns. Through the pursuit of total optimization, we will continue to contribute to customers’ value creation.

With over 80 years of experience in the metal fabrication industry, Muratec understands the quality requirements of the sheet metal marketplace. Utilizing advance-ments in technology and the unique characteristics of fiber laser, Muratec raises the bar for superior, high quality, sheet metal equipment. Furthermore, Muratec's real-time monitoring system enables safe, automatic operation, founded on the principles of efficiency and safety.

Document & IP Solutions

As a pioneer in the facsimile communication market, Muratec has, since 1973, manufactured innovative products that play an integral role in office communication. The increasing reliance on network technology has placed a greater emphasis on effective knowledge management. Regardless of company size, the need to share business-critical data and communica-tion via the network has become increasingly important. Companies with established intranet and LAN environments are bypassing traditional stand-alone copiers and facsimile devices in favor of network-ready MFP’s (multifunctional peripherals) which combine functions such as copying, printing, scanning and faxing into a single, easy-to-use device. Muratec is at the forefront of this transition by developing powerful, network-ready MFP’s and document imaging solutions that offer customer’s greater value, efficiency and reliability.

Faster, broader, and more advanced information transmission capability strengthens the business network.

Communication Equipment Division

In the early 2000s, Muratec introduced the "OfficeBridge" all-in-one solution which expanded traditional fax and MFP capabilities by enabling printing, scanning, faxing and device administration through the web browser.

Muratec has continued to evolve and in 2013 launched three new models, the MFX-3510, MFX-3530 and MFX-3590, which offer advanced scanning functions, powerful print productivity, flexible paper configurations, intuitive user operations and convenient document finishing.

Research & Development

Finding innovative and long-term solutions to formidable problems while grasping the overall needs of the market

Murata Machinery, providing a wide variety of products, conducts research and development while sharing roles and enhancing the creative synergy among the divisions and R&D Headquarters. Each division, as a specialist in each field, creates new ideas and promotes product development useful for customers’ value creation. In addition, the R&D Headquarters, embracing medium- and long-term perspectives, strategically expands the research and development of platform technologies fundamental to multiple business areas.

Going beyond divisional borders to share fundamental technologies in groups

Muratec Group has a long history of rising to the challenge of technological development and has accumulated a stock of reliable mechanical and electronic technologies. Our technical staff love to solve problems that appear impossible and their zeal has generated hundreds of international patents. Our development of cutting-edge products in quick succession is the manifestation of our group’s flexible attitude to radical new ideas and our spirited response to every challenge. Constantly updating hardware technology in step with the times is natural for a machinery manufacturer, but at Muratec we also focus on developing software technology as optimal production applications and technical support tailored to meet the specific needs of each customer. For this purpose, we provide our technical staff with the latest research facilities and a creative environment, in which they can transform abstract ideas into concrete designs. Muratec's experience is the foundation of advanced engineering technology.

Muratec’s origins are in production of machines. We have been applying cutting-edge technology while building expertise in actual production site technology. However, we believe the "quality" that satisfies the customer includes not only hardware performance but also other aspects like price, service and timing. As well as basic production technology, flexible and efficient production lines, line control and management systems, various databases, and other advanced information systems are essential for providing total quality. Muratec also watches developments in state-of-the-art technol-ogy and marketing trends so that we can offer customers the best possible advice for their requirements. Muratec makes every effort to provide real quality for full customer satisfaction.

Advanced manufacturing technology and information systems are key to high quality products

Large five-surface processing machines are at the heart of a bulk-product FMS plant

In pursuit of quality, we introduced the concept of FMS for each production site. The first FMS "NC Center" was established in the lnuyama Plant, in 1981. We continued to establish FMS for various processes, successfully applying it to both quality and small-lot production of multiple product types. In time, with the development of computer technology, FMS evolved into a new concept of CIM (Computer Integrated Manufacturing). Muratec has incorporated its rich expertise into products as a manufacturer of production materials and resources. We have been providing advanced engineering technology, both hardware and software, to makers of many different products.

Customer Support True customer support founded on customer needs

Prompt onsite service

Service personnel have most contact with customer using Muratec products. Our personnel have additional functions in timely delivery of market information, details of the latest technology, and more. As well as responding to customer inqui-ries, problems and other requirements, service personnel continually think about how they can make timely contributions for the benefit of the customer.

Parts in stock can be reserved and estimates for parts can easily be prepared via the Internet (Textile Machinery Division)

Altering the concept of customer services from the perspective of customers

While providing services to fulfill the core principle of customer satisfaction, Muratec is further developing customer support towards consulting, i.e., advice and recommendations on ways of obtaining maximum benefit from our products. This differs considerably from the standard interpretation of "after-sales service." Over the years, the products provided by Murata Machinery have become increasingly sophisticated? Both hardware and software. Similarly, operation and maintenance have become more complex. Accord-ingly, our support activities are extending far beyond simple maintenance of products. Customer support has grown to encompass studies of how we can assist the customer to raise productivity and quality onsite, and other ways of contributing to the customer's business. We believe there is great benefit in continuing dialogue with customer. Timely and appropriate advice or recom-mendations are a key to customer satisfaction and true customer support.

In addition to regular checks and preven-tative maintenance, highly skilled service personnel are ready to provide a prompt response in the case of unforeseen problems with the machines. We have introduced an advanced administration system to manage storage and delivery of spare parts. A thorough service and main-tenance system is thus ready to deal with any eventuality.

Striving for even higherperformance

A parts center using an automated storage & retrieval system

Muratec products have enormous poten-tial. Comprehensive training enables customers to obtain maximum perfor-mance from our machines. Moreover, we are now preparing an information database that will assist us in giving a prompt response to any doubts or ques-tions that may arise after delivery.

The Murata Overseas Scholarship Foun-dation was established in 1970 in honor of the founder of Murata Machinery, the late Teisuke Murata. This Foundation subsi-dizes the expenses of students wishing to study abroad. It places no restraints or limitations on the path they later take. In 2000, the Foundation also began granting scholarships to foreign students studying in Japan. We hope that the scholarship system will cultivate sound international sense, broaden perspectives of young people with powerful dreams, and help them become active on a global scale.

Muratec has long endeavored to give people opportunity to take on creative challenges that are worthy of humanity, and to encourage active participation in society. Based on this concept, we are supporting diverse activities that go far beyond the limitations of corporate business. Local sporting activity is one such area of support. For example, since 1989, we have independently sponsored the annual All-Japan Interprefectural Women's Ekiden-Marathon. This takes place in Kyoto, the city in which the Muratec Head Office is located. We are also a supporting company for the professional soccer team, Kyoto Sanga F.C.. Similarly, the Inuyama Plant. our main factory, has been opened each year since 1999 as the stadium for a bicycle road race. By these means and others, Muratec is stimulating the spirit of challenge and sportsmanship of young people who will take charge of the future.

Corporate Activities with an Emphasis on Compliance with the LawIn order to prevent conduct contrary to the law or deviation from social ethics, Murata Machinery declares that we will engage in corporate activities with an emphasis on compliance with the law, and continue to take relevant measures in an organized manner. We have established a "Compliance & Risk Manage-ment Committee" to comply with various laws, and raised our awareness of compliance with the law, and we are committed to the prevention and prompt detection of malfeasance. We are also educating our employees, through training and other means, on basic knowledge about various laws, on measures to prevent malfeasance, and on other related matters.

Approach toward Environmental ActivitiesWe are a manufacturer that supports value creation for customers through our supply of a wide range of products, and develops its business globally. With this in mind, we believe it is our mission to accomplish two critical objectives in terms of the environment. One is to further cut back on resources and to extend our recycling capabil-ity in order to reduce the environmental burden created by our own activities. The other is to, through our products, help customers in terms of resources and the environment, or, in other words, to provide even more environmentally-friendly products and systems such as more energy-efficient products and easy-to-recycle prod-ucts. It is our goal to achieve harmony with the environment, and to be a manufacturer that responds to global needs.

Disclosing Information by CSR ReportIn order to continuously produce a force for improving our company in the right direction by disclosing and reporting our corporate activity with transparency to our stakeholders, every year we publish the “Muratec CSR Report” that compiles our CSR efforts.

Efforts to Improve Product SafetyOur products are closely related to customers’ daily manufacturing activities and office work. As such, we work on product development while placing the highest priority on safety so that accidents or problems arising from our prod-ucts will not cause damage to customers. We have acquired the ISO9001 certificate, and, in addition, for development and design of products, we are working on controlling the use of hazardous substances in accordance with RoHS Directive etc. through cooperation with suppliers.

Control & Sensing Systems / Control & Sensing Division

Control & Sensing System raises additional value for customer products

The “Inductcoder,” Muratec’s magnetic induction sensor, is comprised of a converter and a sensor, which is assembled using a magnetic coil and ferromagnetic body. As a linear position sensor or a sensor for detecting rotation angles, it offers a compact design, high accuracy and improved resistance to the environment. Muratec offers a variety of sensor systems, including the Inductcoder, from the perspective of an FA manufacturer.

The Control and Sensing Division not only offers a magnetic induction sensor system noted above but various types of original sensors, such as optical sensors, which are mounted onto our own products. Based on our experi-ence in the FA device field, we are able to apply the development techniques used in our control systems and supply various types of FA product modules, such as a fully-closed control system. We will also continue to come up with ideas for new solutions in the field of motion and control.

Network Solutions / Communication Equipment Division

Advancing FA Device Management with Communication Technology Developed in Our Communication EquipmentIn the industrial field, various communication protocols to support applications are used for monitoring the operating status of FA devices and equipment. In order to simultaneously manage multiple FA devices effectively, each device can be connected to a network or Internet, and an IoT (Internet of Things)/M2M (Machine to Machine) solution can be utilized to collect data, remotely monitor device status, manage and control device performance, etc. Muratec introduces environment solutions that can retrieve data from FA devices by a remote maintenance system or sensing/monitoring system via networks, and software applications to process the required data and retrieve necessary information into the company’s industrial machinery and FA system products, and offers the IoT/M2M solution to industrial applica-tions such as on-board devices for automobiles and industrial machinery.

In addition, we utilize a secure VPN management system, called GriDRIVE, to securely access these remote devices in order to collect real-time data, monitor device status and perform maintenance.

Autonomous Transportation Module / Business Development Center

Intelligent Transfer Navigation System for Carrying and Moving FreelyMurata Machinery developed an original autonomous control system (Intelligent Transfer Navigation System), with features such as automatic map generation and self-position recognition, for customers that need an autono-mous function mounted on their product. In addition, we also provide support for developing software for that type of system.

Furthermore, we have been able to utilize our wealth of experience and expertise in automation technology and transfer robots, which we developed in the industrial machinery field, for developing new element technology, such as an omni-directional travel system. We are also involved in the development of autonomous vehicles as well as the development of service robots that feature additional devices based on the application, such as material handling/transfer devices.

The 21st century is an age of mass movement of people, products and information across national borders. A high-level network of technology, information and services is thus essential for a deft and flexible response to the diverse needs of customers the world over. Without fearing the possibility of failure, we accept the challenge of even the smallest idea generated by this network. Maintaining a close working relationship with customers and an intimate awareness of their work environment will allow us to continue offering solutions that match customer needs. For achievement of a dynamic and relaxed society with a balance of efficiency, freedom and justice, where people everywhere hold mutual esteem for the values of others, we aim to work with our customers to meet the challenge of creating new value, as a true partner who merits complete trust.

Across the ages, people's lifestyles and the structure of industry are constantly changing. However, one thing never changes - the importance of product manufacture as a foundation stone of society. As a company engaged in product manufacturing, the starting point of all employee activities is the challenge of development and continual improvement of new technology that gives full satisfaction, always from the standpoint of customers who use our products. We believe acceptance of that challenge contributes to more affluent lifestyles for all employees, their families, society, the nation, and ultimately for people everywhere. Our aim as an enterprise is ongoing contribution to society, through continual creativity applied to the manufacture of products needed by the people of the world.
