Summary

In this unit for second graders, students will learn about pollution. They will be focusing on air and

water pollution. They will also be learning about the

3 R’s, which are Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Lesson 1

Objective: Students will be able to describe pollution and explain how air pollution is affecting the Earth.

Motivation:

Create a “Pollution Web” using the students’ definitions Watch video on Pollution - http://mrsmartinezclass.wikispaces.com/Main+Activities. What’s wrong with the pictures? Continue

to fill out the “Pollution Web.” Give your definition of pollution.

Procedure:

Video on air pollution - http://pbskids.org/eekoworld/index.html?load=air_water-. Work with their partner to fill out the air pollution worksheet- http://mrsmartinezclass.wikispaces.com/Main+Activities Share answers with the entire class .

Summary:

Answer the survey on our wikipage - http://mrsmartinezclass.wikispaces.com/Main+Activities. We will go over the answers together as a class after everyone has completed it.

Homework:

Write a paragraph explaining why air pollution is bad, list two things that cause air pollution and name two ways we can help stop air pollution. Then draw a picture of yourself doing one of the activities that can help stop air pollution. (http://mrsmartinezclass.wikispaces.com/Homework)

Page 5: In this unit for second graders, students will learn about pollution. They will be focusing on air and water pollution. They will also be learning.

Objective: Students will be able to illustrate how water pollution is affecting our oceans?

Motivation:

Review: “Who remembers what pollution is? What is air pollution? What causes air pollution? How can we prevent air pollution?” Watch video on water pollution -http://pbskids.org/eekoworld/index.html?load=air_water Answer 5 questions on our class wikipage - http://mrsmartinezclass.wikispaces.com/Main+Activities Go over the answers together as a class.

Procedure: Split the class up into three groups. One group will be in charge of mixing water and oil. The second group will be in charge of mixing water and detergent. The third group will be in charge of

mixing water with oil and detergent. Place each group by a computer. On this computer each group will listen to the podcast and watch the Jing clip I created-

http://mrsmartinezclass.wikispaces.com/Main+Activities They conduct their experiment. http://mrsmartinezclass.wikispaces.com/Main+Activities

Summary:

Each group will share their observations with the rest of the class.

Homework:

Write a paragraph explaining why water pollution is bad, list two things that cause water pollution and name two ways we can help stop water pollution. Then draw a picture of yourself doing one of the activities that can help stop water pollution. (http://mrsmartinezclass.wikispaces.com/Homework)

Lesson 2

Page 6: In this unit for second graders, students will learn about pollution. They will be focusing on air and water pollution. They will also be learning.

Objective: Students will be able to describe how they can protect the world from pollution using the three R’s- Reduce, Recycle and Reuse.

Motivation: Review- “What types of pollution have we learned about so far? What are their causes? What are some solutions?” Explain to them that there are ways to stop pollution. One of those ways is by recycling. Teach them a recycling song about recycling- http://mrsmartinezclass.wikispaces.com/Main+Activities Create a “Recycling” web on chart paper Watch video on recycling - http://pbskids.org/eekoworld/index.html?load=garbage_recycling. Ask the students to explain to the class the other two R’s they learned about in the video (reducing and reusing) and to give us examples of

how we can do both.

Procedure: Split the class up into four groups. Each group will be in charge of creating a recycling bin for one of the following four items: paper, cans,

bottles and plastic. The four students in each group will create a poster for their bins. - http://mrsmartinezclass.wikispaces.com/Main+Activities

Summary: Each group will present their bins to the rest of the class. Class blog - http://mrsmartinezclass.wikispaces.com/Class+Blog Recycling game online - http://pbskids.org/eekoworld/index.html?load=eekohouse

Homework: Watch a recycling video and write a paragraph explaining why it is important to recycle. (

http://mrsmartinezclass.wikispaces.com/Homework) Study for a Pollution and Recycling quiz , which will be on Thursday. Use the Review Form on our wikipage to help you study for this quiz
