Anemia

Anemia – Decrease in the erythrocyte’s ability to carry oxygen

Causes:1. Low erythrocyte count2. Low hemoglobin count3. Abnormal hemoglobin: Sickle Cell

Anemia

Symptoms:1. Fatigue – tiredness2. Tachycardia – fast heart

rate3. Feeling cold4. Dizziness/Fainting

Draw a picture that is meaningful to you that shows anemia. You will have to explain your picture, so do a good job!

Sickle Cell Disease

Prevalent in people with ancestors from Africa

We will talk about why this group of people when we get to Genetics!

Sickle-shaped cells are sticky and can start blocking blood vessels. No blood flow = very bad!

Symptoms:1. Pain2. All other

anemia symptoms

The next slide will be a web page. Scroll down to the bottom to the infographic, which is the long, dark blue picture. Read the infographic.

Open-ended question:In your own words (DO NOT COPY), explain what Sickle Cell Disease is. Also, write 3 other facts you learned about Sickle Cell.

Hemophilia

This is another one that we will look at the cause of when we get to Genetics.

Symptoms:1. “Free Bleeder”2. Cannot clot blood3. Bruise easily4. Can cause death

This is Prince Alexei Romanov. He was in the Royal Line of the Czars of Russia. He was one of several descendants of Queen Victoria to suffer from Hemophilia. Read about it on the next page!

Fill in the Blank:The Romanov’s were a royal family that ruled the country of Russia. One of the sons of the family was Prince Alexei, who suffered from the blood disease hemophilia. Scientists did DNA studies to show evidence that several Romanov family members, as well as several royal family members in many other countries on the European and Asian continents, suffered from hemophilia because they were all descendants from Queen Victoria, who carried the disease.

Leukemia

Cause:• Too many white blood cells are made• Those cells don’t work well (they aren’t doing their job!)• Crowd out normal, healthy cells and keep them from doing their job too

Symptoms:•Frequent/severe infections•Fever•Fatigue/weakness•Unexplained weight loss

Joe came in to the doctor not feeling well. His complaints included being tired. He also had bruises that he could not explain and his temperature was high. The doctor did a CBC on Joe to see what was going on in his body. CBC stands for Complete Blood Count. Joe’s counts were all low. Because of this, the doctor then did a bone marrow aspiration. This allowed the doctor to see what his bone marrow looks like. In Joe’s sample, there was a very high number of immature blood cells. The doctor put all this information together to give Joe his diagnosis: Joe has leukemia.
