NAEC went West for the 2017 NAEC Educational Conference for some sunshine and beautiful weather in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Scottsdale Resort at McCormick Ranch was headquarters for this year’s conference and industry reunion of more than 190 at-tendees. The original property was founded in 1976 and was the first conference resort in the country. The Scottsdale Resort is nestled between the beautiful Sonoran Desert and the exciting restaurants, bars and shopping of downtown Scottsdale. The Scottsdale Resort offered a beautiful setting for our conference where we enjoyed four days of all the things that make our industry what it is, rela-tionships, education, hard work and fun all along the way.
NAEC’s 2017 President, Joe McNally, kicked things off with the Welcome Reception held outside under the stars with live music, authentic local cuisine and an open bar. Conference Attendees reconnected with friends and colleagues and enjoyed perfect evening temperatures and the beautiful courtyard at the Scott-sdale Resort. The Lift Industry is truly built on relation-ships and the Welcome Reception was the perfect way for those relationships to start this year’s Conference on the right track.
On Monday morning, a delicious breakfast was served at the Opening Breakfast where there wasn’t an empty seat in the room. Joe McNally gave a wonderful opening speech where he gra-ciously recognized all the volunteers, board members and spous-es, committee chairs and committee mem-bers, for all their hard work, commitment and support to NAEC. “The Spring Con-ference, in my opin-ion, is a hidden gem in NAEC’s wealth of services.” Joe continued his address and officially kicked off the educational portion of the conference by inviting everyone to choose carefully among the great ses-sion offerings available after breakfast and the rest of the week.
The meeting space at Scottsdale Resort was connected by cov-ered portico walkways with views of the beautiful property land-scape, where attendees could enjoy some fresh air and Spring weather in between sessions featuring topics from New Employ-ment Laws, Machines 15 Years Later & Beyond, and a refresher on Emergency Codes. The NAEC Registration area was also centrally
located offering a great space to so-cialize, get infor-mation and plan your next activity.
Next on the agenda was the official Golf Tour-nament and the 4 x 4 Adventure Tour. For the golfers, Stone-creek Golf Club
offered 18 challenging holes situated at the base of the Squaw Peak Mountains in Phoenix’s Paradise Valley. If attendees were looking for adventure, then the 4 x 4’s out front were ready to take them off road through the Sonoran Des-ert. This cowboy guided tour demonstrated firsthand how
Cavalry and Native Americans survived in the desert and offered attendees some of the best panoramic views in Arizona.
Tuesday brought another robust agenda of educational sessions and optional experi-ential activities. Attendees started the day with multiple educational sessions to choose from with an insightful session on Roping Sys-tems, Leadership and what it really means, and Rack and Pinion Elevators were just a few of the options available. Those who wanted to flex their creative muscles gath-ered for the Art of Merlot where vino is okay
at 9am! Fun was had by all as a professional artist offered hands on guidance to create your very own masterpiece.

Wednesday offered our Roundtable Discussions with top-ics that ranged from Healthy and Safe Elevator Pit Environ-ments to Private Residential Elevator Code Changes for 2017. The roundtable discussions are an excellent platform for attendees to collaboratively and openly discuss specific issues relative to the roundtable topic, share firsthand expe-rience and learn best practices while networking and build-ing even stronger relationships with industry colleagues.
After all the productivity and hard work in the round-table discussions and First Air Course, attend-ees closed the chapter on another successful Edu-cational Conference by letting loose at the Dregs Party over good food, cold drinks and old fashion fun.
As our President Joe McNally said, and we agree, the NAEC Educational Conference is a “hidden gem” where amaz-ing people that make the Lift Industry what it is, come to-gether to learn, work, play and collaborate. We hope the 2017 NAEC Educational Conference was informative, pro-ductive and beneficial for everyone involved. The NAEC Staff, the Board, and the Committee Volunteers, would like to thank each of you for your continued support. We would also like to recognize and thank each of our Con-ference Sponsor Companies for their support as well.
Get ready! NAEC’s 68th Annual Convention and Expo-sition will be in Orlando at the Orange County Conven-tion Center September 11 – 14, 2017. We’ll see you there!

DELTA ELEVATOR CO. LTD.
The company still works with the same values of Integrity, Service & Quality that Guderian imbedded into the company’s culture years ago. It is an approach that dates back to Guderian’s appren-ticeship, and it is something customers still appreciate today.
When Delta Elevator started in 1967, it was a one-man maintenance business that Guderian ran from his home. Fifty years later it is a full service organization with three branch offices and over 150 employ-ees, including field staff, engineers, and production workers.
Delta Elevator remains a Canadian company and now designs and manufactures its own product, including acces-sibility lif ts, LULAs, freights, and passenger elevators. By making products in-house and manufacturing on a just-in-time basis, the company is able to provide architects and General Contractors with customizable solutions and to accommodate adjustments to building designs on the fly.

Walter Guderian was a teenager when he and his family arrived in the Waterloo Region as immigrants from Germany. After working for Otis Elevator for 10 years as an elevator mechanic, Walter founded Delta Elevator Co. Ltd., which is celebrating 50 years of business in May, 2017.

DELTA ELEVATOR...In recent years, Delta Elevator has established branch offices in Toronto, in Peterborough, and in London. Head office and main operations, however, have always been in Kitchener with all intents to remain there: Since 2000, the administration, manufacturing, repair, and main parts depot for maintenance have been located in the 60,000 square foot facility at 509 Mill Street.

As an active community member, Delta Elevator makes contri-butions to local charities on a regular basis including the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre, The Food Bank of Waterloo Region, Supportive Housing of Waterloo (SHOW), and Menno Homes. The company also supports the community by recruiting locally, by pro-moting from within, and by hiring co-operative education students from local universities and colleges.
Delta Elevator invests heavily in developing its own tradesmen, as often as possible choosing to groom their elevator mechanics through the apprenticeship program. This results in apprentices who share the same values and have the necessary technical capa-bilities. In-house training facilities and programs ensure that once licensed, elevator mechanics remain expertly qualified.
The company has always placed a high value on its employees, and has several with tenures exceeding 25 years, including Senior Management Team members Elizabeth Peters (PCP), VP Human Resources, and Brian Elliott (EDM-A), VP Field Operations, along with several other maintenance mechanics and supervisors.

The company’s longest serving active employee, having worked with Walter Guderian for 29 years.
Delta Elevator has a strong connection to the Canadian Elevator Contractors Association (CECA), the national industry organization of elevator companies from across the country. Walter, a past pres-ident, was one of CECA’s founding members in 1973 as it was very important to him to see the organization develop and become an effective part of the national elevator industry.

In Rome, GA, facility next to a reel of MCX9 elevator rope.
The Brugg Group, as we know it today, was named after the Switzerland home of founder Gottlieb Suhner. The company opened in May of 1896 as a cable factory. Innovative from the beginning, in 1910, it was the first Swiss company to produce ropes for mountain cable cars.
Otto H. Suhner is Chairman of the Board and majority shareholder of The Brugg Group. According to Mr. Suhner, his great-grandfather owned the electrical cable and wire rope company until it became a public corporation in 1908. Six years later, Otto Suhner, Sr. re-entered the wire business, manufacturing flexible shaft drives to transmit rotary power.
The Brugg Group has manufacturing facil-ities in Switzerland, China, and America. It consists of five divisions, with 60 companies in 20 countries, and is represented in all the major industrial countries.
Suhner Cable was the first Swiss company to open a manufacturing plant in Georgia. Groundbreaking for the first plant occurred in 1976, in Rome, Georgia.
Brugg Lifting is one of many divisions of the Brugg Group, opening its doors in Rome in 2001. It is the leading manufacturer of elevator ropes, architectural ropes, wire ropes and lashing ad lifting gear.
Products are utilized in countless numbers of low, mid and hi-rise installations and are renowned for excellence in quality and expedience.

ELECTRODYN SYSTEMS, LTD.
Members of NAEC since 1990, Electrodyn Systems, Ltd. was founded in 1986 by James and Danice Marinelli, a husband and wife operation that began in the garage of a small home in Coconut Creek, FL. There was so much more to come from the now reputa-ble and well known elevator retrofit and safety solutions company. Starting with 2 employees and growing to 25+ employees over the last 30 years, Electrodyn is still family owned and operated; even the employees that are not related have been there for over 20 years and are considered family. Electrodyn has built its reputation on excellent customer service, top notch quality, technical support, and code compliant upgrade solutions. When you call Electrodyn, you will never have to fuss through an automated service or be sent to voicemail. You will always reach a live representative ready to assist you. Technical support is readily available and will even be pro-vided after hours, when circumstances require it, to help resolve any issues. All of their products are non-proprietary and universally designed so they can be applied to almost any control system. Specifically engineered retrofits are designed for unique applica-tions and job prints are revised to reflect the added engineering.
Of Electrodyn’s many products, there are currently 4 top sellers. The newest addition is the Monidor, which provides door and gate monitoring of passenger and freight elevators for faulty door con-tacts. Over the next 3 years, the Monidor will bring over 42,000 elevators in the NYC area up to code while keeping passengers safe.
Next, it’s the product that started it all, the one they are most known for, “The Red Box”. Electrodyn’s “Firefighter Service” retrofit adds Phase I & II operation to any control system making code compliance possible when a fully serviceable controller is lacking new code requirements.
Electrodyn’s Unintended Motion Detection & Control (UMDC) is next on the list. UMDC provides the necessary code-compliant control logic to properly manage a rope brake and ensure passen-ger safety. It’s one of a kind as it is the ONLY after-market retrofit product that provides unintended motion logic for both relay logic and processor based control systems.
Last, but certainly not least, the ElectroLock Door Restrictor! With use of a bi-stable solenoid, the ElectroLock works to keep pas-sengers safe even during a power loss with no need of a battery backup. The Model B simply connects to the door zone signal (eliminating the need for targets) and Model A utilizes RFID tech-nology so both models work seamlessly in smoke, dirt and dust filled environments.
Being a small business has certainly posed its challenges but being a long time member of the NAEC has really given Electrodyn the exposure needed to be known nationally. Being an active par-ticipant in trade shows, seminars and conventions has helped Electrodyn make the necessary connections in the industry.
Electrodyn Systems is proud to be an integral part of elevator safety solutions making ele-vator transportation both safe and reliable.

Provide them with a fair price and give them each and every day our best service. We are very proud of our rep-utation.
ESC Elevator has been servicing and installing residential and light commercial lift products in the Greater Charleston area, and along the South Carolina coast, since 1938. Our company was originally founded by the Brookbanks family in 1901 as Electric Supply Company and con-tinued installing elevator and lift systems after Mr. Eddie A. Cindy is the daughter of the late Eddie Melton.
The last 78 years of experi-ence have included installing, servicing and repairing elevators, light commercial platform lifts, stairlifts and dumbwaiters from all manufacturers. PhoenixModularGrand Opening! The new manufacturing facility for Phoenix Modular Elevator (PME) is now completed.
The new 25,000 square foot manufactur-ing plant is located in Mt. Vernon, south of Highway 15 and west of Interstate 64.
Phoenix Modular Elevator is proud to be the first resident of the new industrial park and is appreciative of the assistance received from the city, Jefferson County Development Corporation and many others
that helped make the new plant a reality. The move was needed because PME outgrew its old location in a former shoe factory in the middle of Mt. Vernon.
PME is an elevator manufacturer that pro-duces high-quality, commercial modular elevators. A modular elevator is comprised of a steel hoistway with the elevator car and components completely pre-wired and installed inside. They are manufactured horizontally, trucked to jobsites, craned into
place and installed in less than a week. This makes PME elevators the fastest installing elevator available. The units are found across the United States and Canada and used in schools, medical facilities, univer-sities, hotels, stadiums, amusement parks, office buildings, government buildings and churches. Phoenix Modular Elevator has been constructing modular elevators since 1995.

We RememberOur Dear Friend, Gregory A. Irvin
October 10, 1971 - March 9, 2017
by Roger Irvin, 4/4/17
Greg Irvin grew up in the elevator industry. Working with his dad, Roger Irvin, he was on top of elevators at a young age. He attended the University of Southern Indiana Evansville and Ivy Tech Institute Sellersburg, IN, while working nights at UPS. In 1993, he joined Irvin Elevator Group, Louisville. Starting as a helper, he worked his way up to construction manager for Irvin. When Irvin sold to Oracle Elevator in 2005, he transferred to Oracle’s Tampa office where he managed construction for Oracle’s Florida operations. Accepting a management position in 2010, at Vertical Solutions, in Tennessee, he spent six years expanding their operations.
He and his wife Julie then started their own company, reviving the name Irvin Elevator Group, in December 2016 in Tennessee’s Tri-Cities area. Greg was an ordained Deacon in the Baptist faith, he was instrumental in planting new churches, and was attending Strong Tower Baptist Church, Johnson City, TN. He is survived by his wife Julie of 22 years, son Austin 19 and daughter Kaitlin 17, parents Wanda and Roger Irvin, brothers Tim Irvin (Gretchen), Todd Irvin (Teru) both of Executive Elevator, several nieces and nephews. Greg delighted in making people smile. He enjoyed cooking, fishing and working on cars with his son. The family thanks everyone for expressions of sympathy and the many memorial contributions of bibles, trees etc. which have been made in Greg’s memory. The family requests any further expressions of sympathy be made in the form of Gideon Bibles in his memory.
