Faith, trust, and a love for God are the values that motivate Caroline Onstot, Hos- pice Friends volunteer, to reach out and touch people’s lives in ways that few other people can. In today’s society there are not many people who are willing to give the keys to their house to someone they just met a week ago and then leave on vacation. But then again, Caroline doesn’t exactly fit the mold of your aver- age citizen. Caroline has a long history of opening up her home and heart to those in need despite the nor- mal apprehensions that most peo- ple would feel. “I just have faith that everything will be ok,” says Caroline. Her faith is not un- founded. When Caroline was a member of a jury that convicted a young woman of substance abuse. After the verdict Caroline saw the woman outside the court- house. “I was crushed when I saw her – she was just sitting there crying. Later I contacted her in jail and befriended her.” When the young woman was released from jail, she had no place to go. Caroline allowed the woman to stay in her home for a couple of weeks until she was able to find a place to live in Seattle. And when she had no way to get to Seattle, Caroline gave the woman her car. This was only the beginning. Since then Caroline has opened her home to a long list of people in need of a place to stay. Through her involvement with “Children of Chernobyl,” she has invited individuals to stay on at least three different occasions - allowing one student to live with her for a year while he attended CWU. Then there were the visiting missionaries that needed a place for their children to stay while they traveled the country for three months, or the time she allowed a friend to stay with her for six months while she recovered from foot surgery. The list goes on. Caroline’s generous hospitality began to fo- cus on hospice care more than twenty years ago when her best friend, Bev DeKoning, was diagnosed with can- cer. In those days, Caroline admits that she often felt uncomfortable and didn’t always know what to say. Caroline went through a year long process learning how to work through many end-of-life is- sues. Caroline and Bev’s children were about the same age and Caroline often had Bev’s two sons stay at her home when Bev was in Seattle for treatments. During the last week of her friend’s life, Caroline shared responsibility with the family sitting vigil at Bev’s bedside. “There were six of us with her when she died. I felt a real spiritual time then. It was awful, but I was thankful to be a part of it.” It was at that point that Caroline made a promise to herself to be a hospice volunteer when she retired. Andrew Lyons

Program Coordinator

We can’t even begin to describe the emo-tions we have gone through over the past few months. As you have probably already read in one of the local newspapers, we have been incredibly blessed with a generous bequest from the late Elmer Seth. Over the course of the next few years, Hospice Friends will re-ceive close to $575,000 from the Seth Estate.

This does not mean, however, that we can stop fundraising and just sit back. The income derived from investing the bequest will allow us to expand services by about 15-20% over the course of the next three years. With a dedicated group of volunteers, board mem-bers, Home Care & Hospice staff, and commu-nity members, we have already begun to for-mulate a strategic plan that will define what services need to be added or expanded. Thus far, we have defined at least nine different goals ranging from improving patient comfort through acquiring new supplies/equipment to advocating for an in-patient hos-pice facility. With your support, and that of our incredible team of volunteers (like Caroline Onstot), we know that we can make every-one of these goals a reality.

Over the course of the past five years Hospice Friends has under-gone some dramatic growth. This has been the direct result of the strong support we have received from individuals and families, such

as you, that believe in the mission of Hospice Friends. Between 1998 and 2004 our annual budget increased from $40,000 to over $65,000. Every year you have provided con-tinual support, and we, in turn, have been able to serve a growing number of those in need. In 1998, we served just under 150 individuals and families, as compared to last year when we served almost 450 individuals and families.

In order to meet the growing needs we see on a daily basis, we will continue to rely on your strong support. Your tax-deductible gift will remain in Kitti-tas County serving friends and neighbors in your community. Many employers also offer giving through payroll deduction, includ-ing Central Washington University and Kittitas Valley Community Hospital.

As you read through this issue of our Hospice Friends newsletter, we hope you will discover how you can contribute to our mission of providing peace, comfort, and care to the frail elderly and those facing life-threatening illnesses. It may be as simple as talking to your friend or neighbor about hos-pice services or advanced directives; or per-haps, after reading Caroline’s story, you will be motivated to volunteer. Whatever you de-cide, please know that your contribution will be welcomed and appreciated.

Sincerely ~ Andrew & Kim

An Open Door Policy Continued... Some twenty years later, Caroline fulfilled her promise by completing Hospice Friends’ training in 2004 to become a patient care vol-unteer. Her first “assignment” was to provide companionship for Maxine Worecester, an eighty-five year old woman who was slowly dying of cancer. In the beginning Caroline just visited once a week in order to bring Maxine “The Clue” - Kittitas County’s local television guide. When Sally, Maxine’s daughter, made plans to move to Arizona for the winter, Sally wanted a non-medical contact to talk to about how Maxine was doing. Caro-line began seeing Maxine on a daily basis and updated Sally as needed. She ran simple errands for Maxine and provided com-panionship when Maxine felt up to talking.

As Maxine began to fail, Dena Dinius, Maxine’s hospice nurse, alerted the family. Over the course of the next few weeks, Maxine’s three children: John (from Texas), Bill (from Hawaii), and Sally (from Arizona) came back to Ellensburg to see their mom for the last time. At first the family stayed in a hotel, but when Caroline offered up her small 1100 sq. ft. home, they accepted and “moved in”.

Later, when Caroline left on a week long vacation, she just gave them the keys and told them to come and go as they needed. Toward the end, the family took shifts being at their mother’s side. At any given time, there was someone sleeping at Caroline’s house, while others were at their mom’s bedside. “They were stacked in there, but they didn’t seem to mind,” Caroline recalled in reference to her tiny guest room. Although Caroline continued to make short visits to see Maxine, she real-ized that, “Maxine didn’t need me, she needed her kids.” The best thing she could do at that point was to support them so that they could have the energy to give the proper care and love to their mom. “To see them use my house…making tea… talking about their mom, it was wonderful to be a part of that.”

In many ways it reminded Caroline of her experience with her own mom who had died of cancer just two years before. Caroline re-members that her mom’s illness and eventual passing brought her family together. “It cre-ated a sense of community, a sense of trust, a sense of family being together, and a realiza-tion of how important that is. It was a privi-lege to be there.”

After Maxine passed away Caroline began to reflect on her re-cent experience of opening her home to Maxine’s family. She decided that, “If this is some-thing there is a need for and something I enjoy doing, then I need to pursue it.” And that she did. In less than a month Caroline managed

to sell her small 1100sq ft home and buy a larger one that could better accommodate her vision of creating a year-round “Hospitality House,” where out-of-town family members that are visiting loved ones on Hospice Friends’ services may stay.

Thanks to Caroline, on April 16th, 2005 the Hospice Friends Hospitality House officially opened its doors. Hospice Friends will pro-vide some monetary and volunteer support as needed, but by in large, this is Caroline’s gift to the community. “This is something I can do and feel good about, but I can’t take any credit for it. Anything I have accomplished in this life has been by the grace of God. Without Him I would have nothing,” said Caroline. “There are times when I don’t want to ever be around death again, but at the same time, my life has been so enriched through these experiences. I have a true passion for this type of work, and I know that I will always receive more than I give.”

Advance Directives and POLST The issues surrounding serious illness and death aren’t always easy to discuss with loved ones. You may find yourself in a situation in which you’re unable to communicate your wishes regarding the extent of treatment ef-forts, such as resuscitation and life-support machines. An advance directive is a statement that declares what kind of treatment a patient wants after he or she has become incompetent or unable to communicate to medical person-nel.

Washington law recognizes two types of Ad-vance Directives:

A health care directive or “living will.” (This is not the same as a “will” or living trust” which are financial documents that plan for the distribution of your financial assets and property.) Advance directives spell out the types of life-sustaining measures you do and do not want. You do not need a lawyer to complete your living will, but you will need a witness’ signature.

A durable power of attorney for health care or DPAHC. (This is not the same as a power of attorney which deals with per-sonal and financial matters.) This docu-ment allows you to designate an individual to make medical decisions on your behalf

in the event you are unable to do so.

The process of discussing and writing advance directives should be ongoing, rather than a single event. Keep the original document in a safe place where family members can get to them (not in a safety deposit box). Give copies to people such as a spouse, family members, physicians, local hospital and clergyperson. Changes can be made at any time, but be sure to give out new, updated copies.

Adults with serious health conditions, who may need to make decisions about life-sustaining treatments at the end of life, are now encouraged to fill out a form called the physicians orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment or POLST. The POLST form is intended to help you and your physician discuss your wishes. It assists health care providers, health care facilities, and emergency medical person-nel to carry out your preferences for end of life care. Advance directives documents and POLST forms are available at the Hospice Friends office or the Community Health Li-brary.

Thanks to Gene Ketzenberg – volunteer extraordinaire, the Cruisin’ for Hospice open car show will be bigger and better than ever this year. Gene has been organizing the event for the past six years and donates all of the proceeds to Hospice Friends. This year Gene has teamed up with KXLE and co-ordinated the event with Bi-Mart’s 50th anni-versary celebration. This year’s show will have something for everyone. There will be live music, raffles, games, and prizes for all ages.

The show already has great sup-port from sponsors, with more coming on board as the event nears. According to Ketzenberg, the sponsors make the show pos-sible. “I can’t thank them enough for all their generosity.” Any type

of car is welcome, from antique or classics to the latest models, even motorcycles and pick-ups. “Anyone who wants to show-off their ride, bring it down,” says Gene. Please contact the Hospice Friends office if you would like to pre-register your vehicle.

Dan Maher Benefit Concert

News from Our Partner Agency Changes are afoot at Home Health and Hos-pice of Kittitas County! Robin Owen, Direc-tor for the past four years, stepped down to join her husband in retirement June 16th. Sherrill Boehm, who has been the Clinical Co-ordinator for nearly four years, took the reins of leadership as Director, effective June 13th. Sherrill is well-prepared for her new role with

many years of home health and hospice ex-perience. She is prepared to take on the chal-lenges of an ever-changing health care environ-ment. Dena Dinius, an RN with 11 years of experience, including two years with Home Health, has been promoted to Clinical Coordi-nator.

How to Get Involved Sending in a donation is not the only way you can help support the mission of Hospice Friends. Below are some other ways that you can become involved. Give us a call!

• Educate others about hospice services and end-of-life issues. We have books, brochures, videos and other resources that can help bring comfort and help one understand the issues surrounding end-of-life.

• Make an in-kind donation. Hospice

Friends relies heavily on donations of equipment (wheelchairs, bath benches, etc.) and supplies (incontinent supplies, twin sheets, etc.). Call the office for a full list of items we accept.

• Become a volunteer. We offer a wide

variety of volunteer opportunities. You could help out with special events, drive clients to medical appointments, assist

with office tasks, or become a patient care volunteer. If you have a skill or talent that you want to share, please contact us and we will most likely find a way to use your contribution.

• Become a board member. We are cur-

rently looking for new board members to help Hospice Friends fulfill its mission.

• Provide input for our strategic plan. Call the office if you would like to be involved with our strategic planning process.

• Take the time to care for the frail elderly and those facing life-threatening illness. You don’t need to be involved with us in order to spend an extra few minutes talk-ing to your neighbor that is battling can-cer or calling up an old friend who has just lost a loved one. Your smallest effort can mean so much.

Thanks to the generosity of Kathy and Ken Cadwallader, Hospice Friends will hold a bene-fit concert featuring Dan Maher of NPR’s “Inland Folk.” There will be a minimal $2-3 cover charge to pay for the facility, along with the opportunity during the show to make an

additional donation to benefit Hospice Friends. We want this to be a fun event for the whole community. If you haven’t heard Dan’s music before, then you don’t want to miss this chance to see him live at the Hal Holmes Cen-ter on August 20th.

will be the contributions we make to the lives of

other human beings.”

“It has been six months since we lost our loved one and you continue to bless us with your resources of help and

hope that I receive regularly. Going on without him is so hard and the days are long and lonely, but our God

never leaves my side.” – Family member touched by Hospice Friends & Home Health & Hospice of Kittitas Valley

“It’s hard to believe my dear wife of 54 years, a wonderful mother, grandmother, and friend too many, has been

gone for two years and three months. I think of her every day and visit her at least twice a week. The girls and I

keep flowers on her headstone all the time. What a wonderful group you are. With your help my wife was able to

be with all her family through all her sickness. Thank you so much.”
