One Year Grafted & Names Varieties

One the following pages are the varieties we offer as young plants.

At the nursery we have the considerable numbers of larger plants up

to eight feet, although not all varieties in the larger size.

The size of the one year grafts when dispatched vary form 6 to 18 inches depending on variety. Some varieties will attain 30 inches in

the first year. Below is the key to the codes after each variety name:

1 = 2-3

2 = 3-7 3 = 7-13 4 = 13-20

5 = 20-30

Mature height can seem alarming in some of the above, but it must be remembered that the maple is a fairly long lived tree which will grow quicker in the early years, and then slowly reach the mature

height. As a guide you could assume that the tree will attain about half of the first figure in ten years.

Hints on Growing Japanese Maples Japanese Maples are ideal subjects for container growing, with a few

simple rules and minimal attention can be grown indefinitely in a restricted environment.

Soil Types for Containers: Most commercial mixes are suitable being of a high peatmoss or bark

mixtures as Acers prefer a well-drained medium. Fertiliser:

Do Not Overfeed! Acers are not greedy feeders, excessive feeding

particularly of a high nitrogen fertiliser will destroy the fine root system. A light spring dressing of one of the balanced fertilisers available will

suffice. Water:

Water is the most important item for a healthy content plant. Acers

resent being aloud to dry out or become waterlogged. Letting them dry out will result in leaf drop and possible loss of the plant, and a

waterlogged plant will result in the roots rotting and the almost certain loss of the plant. It is best to aim at an even level of moisture be it on the moist or dryer side and avoid any violent fluctuations. Do Not water

foliage in the sunlight as leaf scorch will ensure. Water in the evenings or direct into the pot.

Climate: Acers are surprisingly hardy given their delicate appearance. Most enjoying full sunlight exposure and all withstand cold to the roots as low

as -9 deg C, and to the plant above the ground, below -18 deg C. If really excessive weather is expected a piece of sacking or similar material to

lag the container is advisable. They grow wild in Japan where

experience very cold but dry winters. Bonsai:

The ultimate containerisation of a plant for which Acers are by there natural grace of growth and leaf types and tolerance of a restricted

environment, one of the most ideal subjects. The purchase of a book to

give the rudiments of what is basically a simple art of pruning and shaping, which is like all skills has to be learnt by practical experience.

Open Ground Planting: Acers prefer a sandy loam but the perfect soil is seldom available but

they will grow in richer heavier soils or poor sandy soils with

appropriate conditioning, soils with a high PH are unsuitable unless neutralised. Whatever the soil conditions you have to cope with the rule

on feeding and watering apply as in the container grown plants.
