Highlights Recognized by Maryland Nonprofits for completion of Standards for Excellence Basics, a set of rigorous organizational best practices for nonprofit organizations Engaged 1,339 parents and children in Great Start family nights Held 84 workshops and 12 family game nights for pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, 1 st -grade, and 2 nd -grade families at six schools Served our Spanish-speaking families by providing a rotating schedule of 11 interpreters to assist during parent workshops Expanded a dynamic program called Booster Club to 5 schools, with retired educators working with 128 students identified by teachers as needing extra assistance in reading skills Established professional relationships—37 teachers taught parents a variety of math and reading techniques to use with their children at home “To highlight how much of an impact Side by Side has had, of all our first-graders, 67% have improved to either on or above grade level. That started from a low rate of 23%. Now, I would love to sit here and say, ‘It’s all the teachers.’ There’s actually no way that would be possible without the support of an organization like Side by Side. When the families come for a Side by Side event, they truly immerse themselves in what Side by Side is promoting, which is helping to create communication between home and school and giving parents the tools they need at home.” – Justin FitzGerald, principal at Bond Mill Elementary This is my 3 rd year doing Side by Side and I truly believe it has done nothing but wonderful things for our students. Just on a personal level, running the parent workshops and being able to interact with the families, I feel I have a better connection with them. I think about the kids I had last year that I put in Booster Club. These were students I considered, “Ooh, ‘I’m a little worried about their reading data. I want them to make it; I want them to show the growth, and maybe what I’m doing in the classroom is not enough and they need that extra support.” When the Booster Club teachers were finished, every one of my kindergarten students made their growth. There is nothing I can say but positive things.” – Christina Harter, kindergarten teacher at Deerfield Run Elementary “Side by Side matters not just because it’s trying not to leave a child behind, but it’s also equipping the parents to not be left behind either. Side by Side realizes that by engaging, equipping and encouraging the parents to partner with the schools, they are promoting the success of children in the classroom. Because they are equipping the children today, a better community of tomorrow is being built. Paul Shane Spear says, ‘As one person, I cannot change the world, but I can change the world of one person,’ So thank you, Side by Side, for being the hands of God and for displaying God’s heart in the world.” – LaTonya Delaney, Great Start volunteer
