First steps to a successful notebook Identify your notebook. Who does this notebook belong to?

GLP identification scheme is different for all establishments. Some require it be identified as a project code or after the scientists initials. A general identification scheme will be First and Last initial with consecutive numbers. Ex) Marleen Cook’s first notebook = MC01 Marleen Cook’s second notebook = MC02

In the event a new member arrives with the same initials, the notebook ID will be supplemented with a middle initial in the identification. Ex) Mike Romeo Charlie’s first notebook = MRC01

What will your notebook identification be?

Where do I start?

Identify your notebook and make it clear and noticeable on the front cover and spine.

Fill out all the information in the inside cover. Anything that does not apply should have “N/A” and anything that will apply at a later date should remain blank.

Table of contents should be filled out as new pages are filled in with the title assigned to the page.

Notebook references

Numerical reference to any activity done in the lab.

Nomenclature: Notebook ID-Page-LineEx) Marleen Cook’s first lab book. Entry on Page 2 on line 4 = MC01-02-04

Must be noted in a timely manner, clear without disruption to original entry i.e. whiteout, erase, write over, discard, or scratched out.

All measuring units should be clearly stated, times and dates should also be clearly stated with a differentiation of AM and PM or military time should be used.

If any information is change/altered or added you must make a footnote.

When attaching a document an attachment line must be present with initials and date.

Footnotes Footnotes are notation to what you have changed/altered added in a notebook entry with a notation of why, who and when the action was performed.

Every footnote should be different from the last unless the same action occurred

Ex) entry error that has occurred multiple times on the same day bythe same person.
