What is an Earthquake?

Earthquakes are usually caused when rock underground suddenly breaks along a fault. This sudden release of energy causes the seismic waves that make the ground shake. When two blocks of rock or two plates are rubbing against each other, they stick a little. They don't just slide smoothly; the rocks catch on each other. The rocks are still pushing against each other, but not moving.

Where do earthquakes most commonoly happen?

Earthquakes occur most where there are faults and at places that are close to active volcanoes. These areas experience earthquakes because they are characterized by tension in the earth that is released from rocks in the earth crust and upper mantle as a result of friction between the plates. Earthquakes have been recorded in Chile, China, Japan, and Portugal.

What are seismometers?

Seismometers are instruments that measure motions of the ground, including those of seismic waves generated by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and other seismic sources. Records of seismic waves allow seismologists to map the interior of the Earth, and locate and measure the size of these different sources.
