Newsletter Term One 2017 & Early Learning Centre Kia ora koutou! What a varied and productive term it has been. I’d like to congratulate all our returning and new students for their solid efforts this term, and while I’m at it, all our award winners at last year’s prizegiving on their wonderful achievements (acknowledged below). Enrolment day was our busiest ever with 12 new students and their children to welcome into our whānau. Students are now settled and working towards their academic goals. We are always looking for ways to offer a broad range of opportunities for students, so we’re really excitied to have students studying tourism, P.E and Legal Studies at Kaiapoi High School this year. We’ve started the year focussing on Habits that Help Learning. We’ve identified 6 habits: Curiosity; Self Management; Concentration/Focus; Positive Self-Talk; Positive Interactions; & Perseverance Students are reflecting on how they use these habits to support their learning and teachers are promoting and acknowledging their use. We are optimistic that embedding these habits into the way they approach their learing will have a positive impact on both engagement and achievement for students. ERO (the Education Review Office) visited in Week 9 for the first time in 3 years. They really enjoyed our manaaki, and meeting with our students, staff and governance representatives to hear about what we do here at Karanga Mai. We look forward to receiving their report later next term and sharing their feedback with you all. We are well on our way with our Teacher Led Innovation Fund Research Project - renamed the Karanga Mai P.E.A.T. (Participation; Engagement; Achievement; Transition) Project. This term has seen us fill in new students on the project, identify target students and begin to collect data on their learning journeys with us. We’ve also formed a Transitions Working Group to review current practices and create new ones that will positively impact on supporting smooth transitions both into and out of Karanga Mai. As well as being a hive of academic focus, we’ve had lots of other events going on, including two workshops this term with visiting theatre groups; one focussing on family violence, and one on healthy sexual relationships. We also had a good session with Maraea from Stop Smoking Canterbury who is supporting our students to reduce smoking. Students love these kinds of interactive sessions and always take away some great learning. We have connected with Eco Educate to begin looking at Recycling and Sustainability, Highway Trust and Tuhaitara Coastal Park for Citizenship Day activities, and the Kaiapoi 24/7 youth workers to build opportunities for students. Our new regular Tamariki Talks have also seen great particpation by students as you’ll see in Jacinta’s blurb a bit later on in this newsletter. I’d like to welcome Wendy Alabaster (Maths) and Carola Crawford (English) onto our staff for this year. It’s wonderful to have their fresh ideas and expertise on board. You can read a little more about them overleaf. The teaching team have just begun writing progress reports and making plans with students intending to complete their studies and transition next term. If you’re in the neighbourhood, do come in and pay us a visit. Have a look at the Prime Minister’s Education Excellence Award before we have to return it later next term, stop by to read and contribute your ideas to our Research Project, or drop in for a cuppa – we’d love to see you! Kia ora koutou!

What a varied and productive term it has been. I’d like to congratulate all our returning and new students for their solid

efforts this term, and while I’m at it, all our award winners at last year’s prizegiving on their wonderful achievements

(acknowledged below).

Enrolment day was our busiest ever with 12 new students and their children to welcome into our whānau. Students are

now settled and working towards their academic goals. We are always looking for ways to offer a broad range of

opportunities for students, so we’re really excitied to have students studying tourism, P.E and Legal Studies at Kaiapoi

High School this year.

We’ve started the year focussing on Habits that Help Learning. We’ve identified 6 habits:

Curiosity; Self Management; Concentration/Focus; Positive Self-Talk; Positive Interactions; & Perseverance

Students are reflecting on how they use these habits to support their learning and teachers are promoting and

acknowledging their use. We are optimistic that embedding these habits into the way they approach their learing will

have a positive impact on both engagement and achievement for students.

ERO (the Education Review Office) visited in Week 9 for the first time in 3 years. They really enjoyed our manaaki, and

meeting with our students, staff and governance representatives to hear about what we do here at Karanga Mai. We look

forward to receiving their report later next term and sharing their feedback with you all.

We are well on our way with our Teacher Led Innovation Fund Research Project - renamed the Karanga Mai P.E.A.T.

(Participation; Engagement; Achievement; Transition) Project. This term has seen us fill in new students on the project,

identify target students and begin to collect data on their learning journeys with us. We’ve also formed a Transitions

Working Group to review current practices and create new ones that will positively impact on supporting smooth

transitions both into and out of Karanga Mai.

As well as being a hive of academic focus, we’ve had lots of other events going on, including two workshops this term

with visiting theatre groups; one focussing on family violence, and one on healthy sexual relationships. We also had a

good session with Maraea from Stop Smoking Canterbury who is supporting our students to reduce smoking. Students

love these kinds of interactive sessions and always take away some great learning.

We have connected with Eco Educate to begin looking at Recycling and Sustainability, Highway Trust and Tuhaitara

Coastal Park for Citizenship Day activities, and the Kaiapoi 24/7 youth workers to build opportunities for students. Our

new regular Tamariki Talks have also seen great particpation by students as you’ll see in Jacinta’s blurb a bit later on in

this newsletter.

I’d like to welcome Wendy Alabaster (Maths) and Carola Crawford (English) onto our staff for this year. It’s wonderful

to have their fresh ideas and expertise on board. You can read a little more about them overleaf. The teaching team have

just begun writing progress reports and making plans with students intending to complete their studies and transition next

term.

Kia Ora, my name is Carola Crawford and I am so happy teaching English at Karanga Mai. I have a

partner, Donald Ellis, and two grown-up children; Alexandra and Oliver and two granddaughters, Daisy

& Minnie.

For the last 17 years I have worked at Christchurch Girls High, where I set up the Learning Support Centre and taught in the English Department. Karanga Mai is my idea of what a perfect school should

be—a community of ako collaborating and learning together.

I have taught Mathematics and Statistics at a few different schools in Canterbury and North Canterbury. Before having my children, I taught at Marian College, where I met Brigid. After having my children I taught at Hurunui College for many years before returning to Christchurch for shorter stints at Villa Maria and CGHS.

Bumping into Brigid one day when we were both young mums and she was working here at Karanga Mai, proved to be a serendipitous encounter. I mentioned how I would love to work at Karanga Mai and ten or so years later and with a bit of help from Facebook Messenger, here I am.

I am really enjoying being able to work with students in small groups and having the time to get to know

everyone. Karanga Mai is a great place to work. Thank you for making me feel welcome. Wendy

A word from our Social Worker, Mary ...

Kia Ora te whanau,

Well, one term down! We have had some exciting things going on at Karanga Mai. Some highlights from our extra-

curricular programme have been 'Tamariki Talks' (korero around parenting topics that our students have identified),

visits from Maraea for Smokefree support sessions, a visit to Tuhaitara for our Citizenship Day, and a sumptuous

morning tea from Highway Trust.

Next term we are looking forward to continuing & strengthening community connections and are hoping to roll out

the 'Loves me Not' programme, which aims to increase awareness around creating safe relationships.

For me personally, I have enjoyed continuing to build and strengthen relationships with Kinect (a residential pro-

gramme for young parents), as well as our amazing Youth Coaches who work alongside students to support housing

applications, as well as a raft of other support and maintain well-being.

Ka mau te wehi! Mary

Kia ora te whānau

Nau mai haere mai! Welcome to our new tamariki and their mums and welcome back to everyone else.

Ka mahi te tawa uho ki te riri - Well done, you whose courage is like the heart of a tawa tree

We all go through times of hardship and heart ache, however being courageous and having the kaha/strength to pull through

helps us get through tough times. We are not alone in this journey, trusting and supporting one another enables us to lighten

the load. We are all courageous.

Whats been happening? We’ve had a tamar iki talk from Justine on toilet tr aining; Jacinta and Mary facilitated

‘baby talk’; we visited Linwood Kindergarten (see Storypark) which came about from Ezrah’s interest in Maui; and we had

a picnic at Sumner (photos on the photo board). We’ve had some lovely summer weather with lots of water play through the

mud puddle, sprinkler, sandpit, and trough. Now the weather is getting a bit cooler we are finding other ways to play and

keep busy outside (weather permitting) so please bring in some winter gear for your tamariki.

Fundraising efforts by Ngā mihi nunui kia Charity Jams, of which Childcare teacher Marg, is a part of, have enabled us to

purchase some amazing equipment; bikes in various styles and sizes, soccer goals, and a trampoline.

Kupu Hou Māori: Hoatu k ia Isaac/give it to Isaac, Ka taea e koe!/You can do it! This term we have introduced

new waiata Māori, ‘Kōrero, Parirau…’, ‘Ko Aoraki te mauka teitei….’, also through an increased interest in Maui

we have learnt whakapapa , creation stories, tikanga and kupu hou such as names of Atua: Tangaroa, Tāwhirimātea,

Rongo, Tūmataenga, Haumia tikitiki, and many more including Hine Nui Te Po the Goddess

of Death!

Everyday Ezrah asks for a tā moko and to be read the pukapuka about Maui. His pronuncia-

tion of kupu Māori is amazing! And he recalls the legends with ease. If you ask him about

Maui, he can tell you many things, including how he is a trickster!

Next Term: We look forward to getting Matar iki preparations underway. Also we are planning to hold parent/

teacher korero as an opportunity to meet with your tamariki key teacher to celebrate their learning, and how we can work in kotahitanga to

support them. We are also looking forward to trips to the pool and flipped classroom based around curiosity.

He takiwā whakangā nō tātau te ngahuru, te takurua, tae atu ki te tīmatanga o te kōanga/ autumn, winter and the beginning of spring are re-

laxing times. With this in mind we hope you have a relaxing term break.

Mā te wā koutou!

Maunga aroha, nā Marlena
