FOREWORD

As we look forward to another school year, we should remember that the spirit and power of our school lies in

people, not in buildings. Buildings are necessary, but they must have the breath of life breathed into them and

only students, teachers, and parents can do this.

This handbook will assist in familiarizing you with the procedures necessary to operate our high school. It is

hoped that the school will not rule and regulate your life, but that your life may be ruled by a purposeful

commitment to Jesus Christ.

During your high school career, you will face some trying situations. Be assured that the Faculty and

Administration are ready to help and assist you as much as possible.

We expect you to take pride in your school and to exercise a real concern for its welfare.

You are expected to exercise honesty and integrity in all activities, to be well-mannered, and to develop

Christian standards and ideals.

OUR MISSION

The Kalamazoo Christian Schools, in partnership with Christian families and churches, prepare students to serve

God responsibly in His world by equipping them with knowledge, skills, and a biblical vision for life for the

advancement of His kingdom.

SCHOOL POLICIES

ADMISSIONS POLICY

A Basic Philosophy

Kalamazoo Christian Schools have been established and are maintained by an association of Christian parents who are committed to training children in keeping with the teachings of the Holy Bible.

Kalamazoo Christian Schools accept enrollment without discrimination as to race, color, sex or national origin. All rights and privileges are afforded to all students.

The primary criteria for admission of new families are the commitment to Christ of the parents and evidence of that commitment as demonstrated through association and regular participation in an evangelical church, and consistent efforts in the home to establish Christ as Lord of the family. Our schools seek to complement the work of the Christian home and church in providing Christian education for each student.

B. Enrollment

Upon registration each year, parents are expected to sign their written agreement to the following “Beliefs and Purposes” of the Kalamazoo Christian Schools:

l. I believe that God exists in three persons, namely, God the Father, who is the Creator and Sustainer of the universe; God the Son, who became incarnate in Jesus Christ to save sinners who believe in Him, and who now rules as King of the universe and the holy catholic church; and God the Holy Spirit, who was sent as the Christian’s Comforter, Sanctifier, and Guide.

2. I believe that the Holy Bible is the only infallible and inspired Word of God and that it must be taught and used as the guide for the Christian’s life and conduct.

3. I believe that the Word of God requires Christian parents to make every effort to train their children in the fear and nurture of the Lord and that, for this reason, the instruction of children in the school as well as in the home must be in keeping with the teachings of the Word of God.

4. I believe that the right and responsibility to train children belongs to parents and that this school depends on and belongs to the parents rather than the church or state.

5. I believe we must help our students understand that God summons them to honest worship, moral discipline and personal holiness, and that we must equip them for meaningful service in the Kingdom of God.

6. I believe that students enrolled in the Kalamazoo Christian Schools and their parents shall be associated with and regularly attend a church that is in agreement with the basic beliefs and purposes of these institutions.

7. I believe that the Kalamazoo Christian Schools shall meet the academic standards of the state both in respect to academic requirements for faculty and administration and in terms of the basic curriculum to enable the student to contribute to the general welfare of the state and society in which he lives.

Page 4: Web viewIf the student or parent/guardian does not present a parent-/guardian-written and signed excuse/note for the student’s ... book bags when requested to ... trade

ATTENDANCE POLICY

KCHS policy encourages punctuality and regular attendance by all students. State school attendance regulations permit absence from school only in case of illness or personal emergency. It is the goal of the Administration to have every student accounted for at all times.

Absence Codes

ES: Excused because of a school-related function. This does not count towards the total 10 absences allowed per semester

EC Excused college visit. This does count towards the total 10 absences allowed per semester.

EA Excused family-related absences (funerals, pre-approved vacations/trips, etc.)

EI Excused illness

UA Unexcused absence

UT Unexcused tardy

E T Excused tardy

Guidelines for Students

1. Once at school, students must sign out in the office before leaving school and must sign in upon returning to school. Students must obtain parental/guardian permission before leaving school. If a student has a dental, doctor, or other appointment, he/she should provide the office with a note from the parent(s) when leaving. Parents/Guardians may also call and leave a message with the administrative assistant.

2. Upon returning to any missed class, students must bring a note from their parent/guardian to the office, or have the parent/guardian call the office. If the student or parent/guardian does not present a parent-/guardian-written and signed excuse/note for the student’s absence within two days, the absence will be counted as unexcused and the student will receive a detention.

3. Students are not permitted to leave campus to get lunch.

4. If a student is planning an absence for some reason other than a doctor (any type) appointment, they must obtain a planned absence form in the main hall.

Guidelines for Parents/Guardians

1. If a student is going to be absent for any reason, please call the office before 9:00 AM on the morning of the absence. The answering machine is available 24/7 for messages. Please provide the student’s name, the date of the absence, and the reason for the absence. After 10:00, the school will be contacting you to verify the absence of your child.

2. If the parent/guardian is unable to call in on the day of the absence, please either send a note in with the student upon his/her return or call the office within two days.

3. If there is a discrepancy in absences, please call the office. Please leave a message if you cannot get through. Please provide the student’s name, the date of the absence, and the reason for the absence.

Kinds of Absences

Parent/Guardian - Excused Absences

1. Excused absences include all absences which parents/guardians determine necessary or important reasons for their child to miss school. A parent/guardian-excused absence counts towards the allowed total of 10 absences per semester in any class.

2. Doctor or Dentist Appointments – Students must sign in and sign out in the main office. Verification from the doctor’s office can serve as a note and permission to leave campus.

3. Family Vacations* – Parents/Guardians are discouraged from removing their children from school for vacations, mission trips, and other extended parent-excused absences during the school year. Missing school may adversely affect both the student’s education and performance.

*Family vacations involving any time the week prior to exam week, during exam week, or the week following exam week will not be approved/excused. Teachers are not obligated to prepare lesson materials beforehand or to attempt to recreate labs, discussions, lectures, or provide tutoring after the fact.

School Activity Absences - This includes times when an approved school event (such as a field trip, athletic contest/travel, music performance, etc.) takes the student out of class during the regular school day. These absences do not count towards the total number of absences allowed per semester. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the teacher to determine what homework, tests or quizzes he/she needs to complete and to set up a reasonable timetable for this to be accomplished.

Unexpected Absence

1. Illness or family emergencies – These are excused, although verification from a parent or guardian is required. A phone call by 10:00 a.m. on the day of the absence is expected. A signed note stating the reason for the absence provided by a late-arriving student is also acceptable.

2. Funerals or other emergency-type absences – This is obviously excused. Parent(s)/Guardian(s) should call the office as soon as they know of the arrangements, or students should provide the office with a note explaining the situation.

Unexcused Absences (Truancy)

The office will assign a detention for every class period that is not excused. The student will not be allowed to complete any assignments on that day for that day, if they have been determined unexcused. After three unexcused absences in any class, the student will automatically be out of the class and will receive an “F” in that class.

Absences

In order to participate in an event or contest, an athlete or co-curricular participant must be at and remain in school by 11:00 am on the date of the event, unless previous arrangements have been made between the parents and the athletic director. Practices do not apply to this rule.

Tardies

1. Students who are late to class cause disruptions and the educational process suffers not only for the late student, but for the entire class. Penalties for tardies ranging from staying after class to permanent removal from class will be decided by the administration.

Page 6: Web viewIf the student or parent/guardian does not present a parent-/guardian-written and signed excuse/note for the student’s ... book bags when requested to ... trade

2. Detentions can be assigned for being tardy or for other forms of inappropriate behavior.

CAMPUS OPEN/CLOSED

1. In general, Kalamazoo Christian High School has a closed campus policy. Any student having arrived in the morning is expected to remain on campus until the school day ends. Exceptions to this policy are:

a. Dental, doctor, or other such appointments as requested in writing and presented to and approved by the office.

b. Cases of emergency illness where students may leave with permission of the office and parents.

2. KCHS campus (grounds and building) is closed to non-KCHS students during the school day (defined as 7:30 AM to 3:00 PM) except under provisions found in the section of this handbook entitled VISITORS.

3. We expect students to leave campus by 4:00 PM on normal school days, unless they are involved in a school-sponsored activity. Exceptions may be granted by the Administration.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Believing that biblical knowledge must be integrated with practical life experiences, KCHS requires students to complete community service projects. Students are required to complete a service project to the community each year.

Grade level requirements are:

Freshmen 10 hours

Sophomores 15 hours

Juniors 15 hours

Seniors 10 hours

DISCIPLINE POLICY AND REGULATIONS

A. Philosophy

The Bible clearly states that parents/guardians are responsible for the training and instruction of their children. The Christian school exists to assist parents/guardians in a partnership in this God-given responsibility. Therefore, there is a policy in place for the administration of the Kalamazoo Christian High School to serve as the parent/guardians’ appointed and authorized representatives in the training process. The school has attempted to align itself as closely as possible with the Bible’s instructions to parents/guardians and provide consistency between home and school.

All students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner, which will reflect honor and glory to God. This will be evident in attitude, language, and behavior during practice, games, or attendance at these and other school-related or community activities year round. While total agreement about each rule is impossible, the administration will do its best to apply discipline consistently and in a timely fashion while in close communication with parents.

Page 7: Web viewIf the student or parent/guardian does not present a parent-/guardian-written and signed excuse/note for the student’s ... book bags when requested to ... trade

B. Specific Discipline Policies and Regulations

Tobacco and Substance Abuse

The school believes that the use of tobacco, alcohol, mood- or mind-altering chemical, vape devices, vape juice, e-cigarettes, steroids or other performance-enhancing substances, as well as other illegal substances, or paraphernalia is a violation of standards of student behavior. Students violating these standards will be dealt with in accordance with school rules.

No student may use or have in his/her possession tobacco, vape devices, vape juice, e-cigarettes, alcohol, mood- or mind-altering chemicals, steroids or other performance-enhancing substances, as well as other illegal substances on school property, off campus and/or while in attendance at school or school-related activities and events. This is in effect year round. This includes pictures posted on the Web which display possession of alcohol or other illegal substances. The school may employ a private detection firm to assist in determining the presence of illegal substances on campus. Searches may be conducted in the building and in the parking lot. Students are expected to cooperate with searches by unlocking cars and lockers, as well as opening book bags when requested to do so. When tobacco, illegal substances, weapons, or other prohibited items are found, the driver of the car, owner of the book bag, or student assigned to the locker will be held responsible for being in possession of the item.

The penalties for tobacco possession and/or use on school property and/or during school hours are:

First Offense $20 fine and two hours of work detail

Second Offense: $40 fine and two hours of work detail

Third Offense: Expulsion from school or enrollment in a tobacco addiction program at the student/parent/guardian’s expense.

The penalties for possession, use, or being under the influence of controlled substances including alcohol will include and exceed those penalties listed under tobacco. Parents/Guardians and local law enforcement officers will be notified in most cases.

Students involved in alcohol or substance abuse offenses at any time, day or night, in any place (school or off-campus) year round will be restricted in their participation in school functions requiring a high level of responsibility, including but not limited to field trips, Close-Up, Senior Trip, Grad Bash, PAK-sponsored activities, etc. The level of restrictions will depend on the offense and the reaction of the student and will be determined by the school administration and parent/guardian input.

Any employee, student or other person(s) shall report any student who is suspected of possessing, selling, using or being under the influence of inappropriate substances. These reports will be made to administration or other responsible school personnel and investigated to determine if there is a reasonable basis to believe that a student may be involved as reported. An appropriate record of the investigation will be made. The administration reserves the right, with parental/guardian consent, to demand proper assessment including an alcohol breath analysis, urine sampling, or referral to a professional assessment, which will occur within 48 hours of the referral.

Dress Code

Please support the administration’s judgment and attempts at providing an environment conducive to learning.

Page 8: Web viewIf the student or parent/guardian does not present a parent-/guardian-written and signed excuse/note for the student’s ... book bags when requested to ... trade

The school administration reserves the right to decide what is proper and fitting in the manner of dress for school wear. In general, the dress code at Christian High can best be summed up by stating that dress should be neat, clean, modest, and appropriate for Christians. It should not attract undue attention, be suggestive, immodest, nor promote a non-Christian life style. Clothing is meant to cover, not reveal. View the dress code, not as rules and regulations, but as a way to learn how to dress professionally and appropriately.

Some “rules of thumb” to help parents and students decide what will avoid a trip home:

Shorts that have a 5-inch inseam and a length below the fingers of an extended hand are acceptable.

Skirts must extend a length below the fingers of an extended hand.

Girls may wear shirts, blouses, or dresses without sleeves, but the straps must be the width of four fingers.

Leggings and Yoga style pants may only be worn with a tunic top or dress. The derriere must be completely covered.

Boys are not allowed to wear tank-type shirts or shirts with no sleeves.

Skin between the pants and shirt must be covered.

Stand in front of your child as a teacher would or have your child sit on the floor as they will do in the hallway. Have them raise their hands above their heads. Decide if their appearance will be a distraction.

While it is impossible to list a complete code of dress, some clothing, apparel, and appearances prohibited include:

Skirts, shorts, half shirts, or dresses that are designed or worn in a manner that reveals undergarments and/or too much skin.

Students are NOT allowed to wear hats in school.

Clothing promoting drugs, tobacco products, alcohol, symbols of Satanism, skull and crossbones, or “music bands” are not acceptable. Nor is jewelry or other personal possessions promoting drugs, tobacco products, alcohol, symbols of Satanism, “heavy-metal rock,” or gang involvement.

Hair styles designed to attract undue attention.

Jeans that are ripped and torn.

Shoes are required at all times.

Students not in compliance with the dress code will be excluded from class until appropriate clothing has been substituted. Any class or part of a class missed will result in either a tardy or an absence.

3. Cruel Teasing – Harassment (Sexual and Other)

a. Sexual harassment by other students or by employees is unlawful and contrary to our religious beliefs and the commitment of this school to provide a stable learning and working environment. It is the policy of this school that all contact between students, teachers, and other adult employees

Page 9: Web viewIf the student or parent/guardian does not present a parent-/guardian-written and signed excuse/note for the student’s ... book bags when requested to ... trade

shall be in keeping with respect for the individual student or teacher, and be of a nature which does not make a student or teacher feel uncomfortable, as well as one that creates a stable environment.

b. Other forms of harassment include physical, verbal, cyber-space, blogs, and other written forms, which will also not be tolerated. School authorities will not tolerate any form of harassment of students or faculty. All reports of teasing or harassing will be handled discreetly to maintain confidentiality in order to avoid embarrassment and to protect the student, teacher, or individual making the report. However, it should be understood that this school is required by law to report child abuse to the appropriate social agency, which protects the rights of individuals in such cases.

c. Any person who is determined to have violated this policy will be subject to disciplinary action including the possibility of employment termination (for staff members) or expulsion (for students).

Levels of Unacceptable Behavior – Discipline procedures to be used for each level are on file in the main office. The behaviors listed under the three levels below are intended as examples of the types of behaviors that fall under each category. The administration reserves the right, however, to exercise its discretion under the circumstances of each case to determine at what level the behavior falls. No student will be sent home unless there is direct parent contact.

Level I Behaviors tend to disrupt the normal activities of the school day. These behaviors are typically addressed by the adult in charge and typically result in documentation that is given to administration. The following are examples of the most common Level I behaviors:

1. Classroom Disruption. The act of engaging in and/or being involved in behavior which disrupts the educational process of other students in the classroom.

2. Defacing School Property. Willfully scratching, marking on, or otherwise altering school property.

3. Disrespect/Vulgar Language (non-directed). Written/spoken communication or gesture that is abusive, disrespectful, discriminatory, obscene or undesirable and destructive to another student.

4. Dress Code Violation.

5. Leaving Campus. When a student who arrived on the school site leaves without expressed permission from the school.

6. Insubordination. Failure to comply with a reasonable request from the adult in charge.

7. Careless or Reckless Driving. Driving in an unsafe or disorderly manner.

Level II Behaviors tend to disrupt the normal activities of the school day and require administrative intervention. If a Level I behavior is repeated, it automatically becomes a Level II behavior. Disciplinary intervention for behaviors in this category will be discussed among parents/guardians and administration. In all cases, parents/guardians will be notified verbally and/or in writing. A follow-up letter will be sent home and a copy will be placed in the student’s file. The following are examples of the most common Level II behaviors:

Page 10: Web viewIf the student or parent/guardian does not present a parent-/guardian-written and signed excuse/note for the student’s ... book bags when requested to ... trade

1. Dishonesty/Cheating. Assistance used or provided in the completion of academic work, which has not been approved by the instructor of the class. No credit will be given for any material that is involved in cheating.

2. Disrespectful/Vulgar Language (Directed). Written/spoken communication or gesture that is abusive, disrespectful, discriminatory, obscene or undesirable and directed toward another student, teacher, or other adult.

3. Computer Misuse. Any computer activity viewed as illegal or inappropriate

4. Destruction of Property. The neglectful destruction or damage of school property or the property of others. This will result in both appropriate disciplinary action and the replacement of such property by the student and/or his/her parent(s) or legal guardian(s).

5. Theft or Unauthorized possession of property. Stealing or possession of items or property of the school or of other individuals that is unauthorized to be in that person’s possession by the rightful owner.

6. Use of Tobacco, Alcohol Vape Devices, Vape Juice, and other illegal substances.

Level III Behaviors are those actions, which violate the safety and security of the learning environment and require immediate administrative intervention. Level II behaviors that are repeated will become Level III offenses. Disciplinary intervention for behaviors in this category will include suspension up to permanent expulsion from school. In all cases, parents/guardians will be notified and will be asked to come to school for a conference with administration and their student. A re-entry conference will be required prior to the student’s return. The following are examples of the most common Level III behaviors:

1. Assault. Any attempt or threat to injure another person while on school grounds, going to or from school, or attending school-sponsored activities.

2. Dangerous Weapons or Other Items designed to inflict bodily harm. These include but are not limited to matches, lighters, fireworks (smoke bombs, firecrackers, etc.), firearms (including paint-ball and air-soft guns), knives of any kind, and other such items which expose students, school personnel or property to danger. Unauthorized possession of weapons will almost always result in expulsion.

D. Means of Discipline

Detention

Fines: Monetary fines will be assessed for parking, driving, and other vehicular offenses. Fines range from $5 to $50 for vehicle-related offenses. Fines will also be assessed for tobacco, alcohol, and substance abuse offenses ranging from $20 to $60.

Probation: Students incurring significant disciplinary action will be placed on probation. The terms of the probationary status will be determined by the administration. Parents will be notified and involved in the terms for probation.

Suspension: Suspensions are either in-school or at-home.

Page 11: Web viewIf the student or parent/guardian does not present a parent-/guardian-written and signed excuse/note for the student’s ... book bags when requested to ... trade

a. Suspensions may be made only by the administration, may vary in length from one to three days, and will be clearly communicated to the parent.

b. The consequences of a suspension are the student will be required to make up and hand in all missed work including tests and quizzes. He or she will receive full credit for missed work only if the work is made up within a reasonable time as specified by the teacher(s). A record of the suspension will be placed in the student’s file. Repeated offenses will result in more severe penalties.

Expulsion: Expulsion is a last resort and results after unsuccessful discipline and repeated behaviors on the part of the student.

Student Rights in the Discipline Process

The administration will follow school policy and Scriptural principles of love, compassion, and justice in their dealings with students and parents.

The parent or guardian may appeal a decision they feel is unjust if resolution cannot be reached with the teacher or administrator involved. The right to a hearing with the High School Council must be requested, in writing, by the student’s parent or guardian, and received by the Council president prior to the regular monthly meeting of the High School Council. The decision of the Council is final.

DROPPING OR ADDING A COURSE

Students will have one week at the beginning of each semester to drop or add a course without penalty. Each student must take six courses each semester unless special permission has been granted to take five. In order to drop or add a course, a student must obtain a drop/add form from the Guidance Office. Before a drop or add is approved, it must be signed by the student’s parents, the teachers involved, and the counselor.

GRADES, HONOR ROLL

1. A student’s cumulative or overall grade point average is calculated after each semester. Grades are averaged on a 4.00 scale and grades of all classes are used in the average. Only final semester grades are used in the cumulative GPA.

2. Seniors may be exempt from the exam in a second-semester course if they achieve one of the following:

Semester grade in that course of B+ or higher. Semester grade in that course equal to or higher than their cumulative GPA.

Additionally, students must demonstrate consistent effort in their schoolwork and have no major disciplinary referrals during the semester. Exemptions are a privilege, not a right, and are always awarded at the discretion of the classroom teacher.

An Incomplete is given when work for a marking period has not been completed. If this work is not completed in the time allowed, an “F” will be given for the missed work and the final grade calculated. An Incomplete must be made up in two weeks after the first semester and in one week at the end of the school year.

GUIDANCE & COUNSELING

The counselor will hold conferences periodically with groups of students and with individuals relative to school and student problems, course selection, evaluation of work being done by the student, planning for college or career, contacts with the home, etc. A student should feel free to contact the counselor at any time on the above matters. Naturally, any teacher on the staff is willing to advise a student, and the office personnel are happy to assist you at any time and answer your questions.

Guidance involves personal help in assisting a student to solve problems in spiritual, vocational, educational, social, and other personal areas. It also involves standardized aptitude and college entrance testing and scholarship information. Contact a counselor for information on this service.

Kids in Crisis Policy

Role of Teacher

Teachers are and must continue to be the “front line” counselors on the staff. With all of our varied personalities, together we can meet the various needs of all the students here at KCHS. However, teachers must always consider the need to consult with and refer to the professional counseling staff in the school. Teachers must recognize their limits and the limits of their training. Careful judgment is needed in determining the limits of their involvement with a student. Teachers must use the counseling staff when the limits of their training become apparent.

Page 13: Web viewIf the student or parent/guardian does not present a parent-/guardian-written and signed excuse/note for the student’s ... book bags when requested to ... trade

Role and Rights of Parents

Parents are encouraged to communicate with the school any special needs that their children have. The best way counselors can be of help is if the parents inform the counselors of particular needs. Parents have a right to know and a need to know when their child is in serious trouble. No information will be kept from parents if their child is doing or plans to do anything that might place their life in jeopardy. The counseling staff and teachers pledge to be mindful of this responsibility to parents, and will consult with them as soon as needed.

Rights of Students

In all of the above and in every relationship, confidentiality is an important ingredient. All of us must be careful to respect the students’ right to privacy. Information shared by the student must be treated with respect and sharing this information with others must be done very thoughtfully. Students have a right to the opportunity to confide in someone without the fear of a breach of confidence.

Pregnancy Policy

KCHS is committed to the sacredness and sanctity of human life. Life is a gift from God that must be treasured and nourished. Even before an individual is conceived, God knows and loves that person. (Jeremiah1:4).

KCHS, through its counseling staff, faculty and administration, will seek to assist the pregnant girl in dealing with problems she may face during pregnancy. The emphasis and focus of this concern will be as an expression of love, nurture, and support so that the girl and her family are able to make decisions within an atmosphere of Christian love and forgiveness.

Should a KCHS student become the father of a child, the same support and concern will be shown. While most of the physical and medical circumstances are not applicable to a prospective father’s situation, the goal of helping the boy and his family make responsible Christian decisions remains the same.

The male or female student involved in a pregnancy shall be subject to High School Council approved restrictions in activities in which he or she represents the school. This includes all PAK functions and class-related activities.

Should a student at KCHS submit to an abortion, she will be subject to immediate suspension from all classes and school activities, pending a final review and decision by the High School Council. The High School Council, following a prayerful review and examination of all the circumstances, including the role of the father, and upon the advice of the administration and faculty, may terminate the mother’s/father’s right to attend KCHS.

The goal of the High School Council, faculty, administration and staff is to preserve life, provide love and support for the family, and to encourage a pregnant girl to complete her education.

LOCKER POLICY

A corridor locker is provided for the use of each student. We advise students not to leave valuable or unidentified possessions in lockers. Students should have all of their books and material identified. Valuables or large sums of money should be brought to the office for safekeeping. Students are

Page 14: Web viewIf the student or parent/guardian does not present a parent-/guardian-written and signed excuse/note for the student’s ... book bags when requested to ... trade

expected to keep lockers clean and in top condition. No stickers of any kind may be placed on the outside of the locker. Pictures may be posted inside the locker provided they are in good taste.

Tampering with lockers in any way is strictly forbidden. Students violating this rule will be assigned a detention and possible fines.

The school retains the right to inspect and search any and all lockers at any time for any reason. Students may put a school-issued lock on their locker if they wish. Students may not change from the locker assigned without getting permission from the school secretary.

Physical education lockers will be assigned to all students taking the course. These lockers are designed for storing valuables, towels, shoes, etc., during class. Each student will be required to pay a fee for use of these lockers for the school year.

All of a student’s possessions should be stored in one of their lockers, either hall or athletic. Items may not be left on the floor in the hallways or commons.

LOST AND FOUND

Any unclaimed articles found in the school should be turned in to the school office promptly. Students who have lost any items should check for them in the school office. All books and possessions should be labeled so that they can be identified should they be lost, misplaced or stolen. Lost and Found items will be displayed periodically. Unclaimed items will be given to charity.

MEDIA CENTER (LIBRARY) SERVICES

Students are asked to treat Media Center materials and equipment with respect and care. The Media Center facilities are there for all students to enjoy.

Students who misuse their Media Center privileges by defacing or removing items without permission will be subject to discipline. Cost of replacement, loss of library privileges, essays, detentions, or other forms of discipline may be used.

Student Email Accounts

The use of the KCSA network is a privilege as is the use of a KCSA-sponsored email account. All students are expected to follow the guidelines in the school’s Acceptable Use Policy. Students and parents are also expected to be familiar with the following:

KCSA Student Email Accounts:

Student email accounts are to be used only for school-related activity.

It is the responsibility of the student to protect their password.

Students will not transfer material that is illegal or subject to copyright laws.

Obscene, vulgar, bullying, harassing, or sexually explicit content is prohibited.

Students will understand that the email accounts are not private and will be subject to inspection at the discretion of the school Principal and the Technology Director.

Page 15: Web viewIf the student or parent/guardian does not present a parent-/guardian-written and signed excuse/note for the student’s ... book bags when requested to ... trade

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors with a 3.33 GPA are eligible for consideration for membership in the KCHS National Honor Society. Eligibility guidelines are established by the National Honor Society. Honor Society members will be chosen by a faculty evaluation on the basis of four attributes: Character, Leadership, Service, and Scholarship. To remain a member of NHS, students must maintain a 3.33 GPA, and demonstrate the four attributes of NHS.

PARENT-SCHOOL RELATIONS

A. Appointments to See Teachers

It is important that students understand that training rules are in force THE YEAR AROUND! It is also important for students to realize that their attendance at parties where alcohol and/or illegal substances are present may incriminate them. They should not attend such functions. This also includes pictures posted on the Web which show the student in possession of any alcohol or illegal substances.

Athletic/Performance Co-Curricular Activity Penalties – If a violation of the contract occurs, the Athletic Director or Sponsor of the Performing Group and the parents/guardians will be contacted. Parents/Guardians will be asked for input, but the final decision rests with the administration. An offense is defined as any activity that goes against school rules or one that could be punishable by the law, excluding civil infractions.

No student, athlete, or participant in co-curricular activities may use or have in his/her possession tobacco, alcohol, mood-/mind-altering substances, vape devices, vape juice, steroids or other performance-enhancing substances, or any other illegal substances at any time in the calendar year. When any student’s behavior (participating or attending) reflects negatively on the reputation of his/her team or the school (see above), that student may be subject to similar penalties. Those in attendance at co-curricular activities are expected to abide by the same behavior expectations. No student will be sent home without direct parent contact.

1st Offense:

Suspension from 1/3 of athletic contests or 3 weeks for a performance activity

Suspension may be reduced to ½ of the original suspension if he/she participates in the completion of penalties (found below) which have been placed on him/her. If the student is unable to fulfill the requirements of the suspension, he/she will need to make arrangements with the administration. Failure to meet the compromised deadline will result in a double suspension from athletic contests. Coaches will be informed of this procedure.

An athlete must participate in all practices.

An athlete will not suit up or warm up for contests.

There is no loss of letter or post-season awards, if they successfully complete the assessed penalties.

2nd Offense

Suspension from 1/3 of athletic contests or 3 weeks for a performance activity.

Suspension will not be reduced. A student is not able to return to full participation until penalties are completed.

An athlete must participate in all practices.

An athlete will not suit up or warm up for contests.

An athlete will lose any letter or post-season award for that sports season.

3rd Offense

Student is suspended from participation for one full year from activity. He/she will be required to complete all penalties before he/she may participate after the suspension.

An athlete will lose any letter or post-season award for that sports season.

Page 18: Web viewIf the student or parent/guardian does not present a parent-/guardian-written and signed excuse/note for the student’s ... book bags when requested to ... trade

If the violation occurs late in the season, the offender will still serve the entire suspension, but the suspension will be carried over to the next sports/performance season of participation.
